Longwood graduates start careers in business, chemistry, geology, law, medicine, physics, education, theater, and hundreds of other disciplines every year because they are well prepared. Strong academics, a faculty devoted to teaching, and required internships prime Longwood students to tackle the real world. Longwoods job placement rate is more than 90percent. Longwood is consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report. The University was listed Best in the Southeast in the Princeton Reviews 2007 report of the Best 361 Colleges. It was also ranked in Kiplingers personal finance magazine as one of the 100 Best Values in Public Colleges, a report based on the combination of top-flight academics and an affordable cost. Longwood was also recognized in USA Today as one of twenty colleges nationwide that foster student success.
Of the Universitys 3,986 undergraduate students, 65percent are women, and 15percent are transfer students. Longwood is a destination for students from all over the country and the world. More than twenty-five states and sixteen countries are represented on campus. The majority of out-of-state students come from Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and Connecticut.
Approximately 70percent of undergraduates live in University-managed housing. Longwood Landings, a new residence hall adjacent to Longwoods 60-acre campus, offers apartment-style living above ground-floor bookstores and coffee shops. University-managed, apartment-style living is also available in two other off-campus locations. Game rooms, theaters, and an outdoor pool add appeal for upper-class students. Access to the Internet is available from each residence hall room as well as from all campus buildings. More than 125 clubs, organizations, and special-interest groups, in addition to student-run festivals and a thriving live-music scene, offer something for every student. Through these organizations, students work closely with faculty members and other campus leaders to create an unusually well-coordinated academic and student-affairs program that has a strong impact on the Longwood environment. About 17percent of students are in social fraternities or sororities.
Longwood University is a member of NCAA DivisionI. Mens and womens intercollegiate teams include basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, and tennis. In addition, the University fields a mens baseball team and womens field hockey, lacrosse, and softball teams. Club and intramural sports are available for basketball, bicycling, equestrian, flag football, golf, racquetball, rugby, soccer, swimming, ultimate Frisbee, and volleyball, among others.
In addition to its undergraduate degrees, Longwood also offers graduate degree programs in business, communication sciences and disorders, education, English and modern languages, and sociology.
Location
Farmville is a dynamic two-college town with all of the best features of a small communitybeautiful scenery, quaint shops, and a rich history. Students appreciate the lower cost of living and the ease of travel in and out of town. They also enjoy key features, such as trendy restaurants and nightspots, an eight-screen multiplex cinema, and three golf courses. Farmville also is less than 30minutes from three of Virginias state parks and approximately an hour away from Richmond and Charlottesvilleperfect for day trips. Theme parks, skiing, the Atlantic Ocean, and even the nations capital also are short drives away.
Majors and Degrees
Longwood University offers the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.), the Bachelor of Music (B.M.), the Bachelor of Science (B.S.), and the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.) degrees.
Majors are anthropology, art (education, graphic design, history, painting, photography), biology, business administration (accounting, business education, computer information systems, economics, finance, management, marketing, real estate, retailing), chemistry, communication sciences and disorders, communication studies (mass media, organizational and strategic communication), computer science, criminology/criminal justice, economics (business economics, international economics, public policy), English, French, German, history, kinesiology (athletic training, exercise science, K12 teaching), liberal studies (with licensure in elementary, middle, and special education), mathematics, music (education, performance, piano pedagogy), physics, political science (prelaw), preprofessional medical, psychology, secondary education certification, social work, sociology, Spanish, theater, and therapeutic recreation.
Academic Programs
The purpose of the General Education Program at Longwood is the development of disciplined, informed, and creative minds. General education is the foundation upon which all other learning is built and is therefore the central component of a Longwood education. The General Education Program comprises fifteen goals, most of which are addressed by a variety of core courses from which students may choose. A total of 41 hours of core courses are required.
The Longwood Seminar is a 1-credit course required of all freshmen. It is designed to promote critical thinking and analysis in all aspects of the students lives and develop the knowledge and skills that lead to college success. This is accomplished by establishing a network that fosters a positive transition to college. Freshmen normally carry 15 to 17 credits per semester.

Longwood participates in cooperative programs in engineering with the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Virginia Commonwealth University, Old Dominion University, Christopher Newport University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and the University of Tennessee. The Universitys preprofessional program in the medical sciences prepares students for admission to schools of medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, medical technology, dental hygiene, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and pharmacy.
Off-Campus Programs
Longwood requires all students to participate in an internship or a directed research experience. Students gain hands-on real-world experience at a wide range of organizations. The study-abroad program offers exchanges in such places as Australia, Belize, China, England, France, Ireland, and Spain. Other destinations are offered through affiliated programs.
Academic Facilities
The Greenwood Library, conveniently located near the center of the campus, offers 250,000 cataloged titles and currently subscribes to 1,600 journals. Some 700,000 microform units and sound and video recordings supplement the book and journal collections. The library also provides access to the holdings of other libraries through its interlibrary loan service. Students can access the library from the campus network or the Internet. The librarys information center, with forty-eight workstations, provides Internet access and a variety of reference services. Small group meeting rooms facilitate learning, and students enjoy an onsite coffee shop.
A new, four-story Science Center opened in December2005. The 70,822-square-foot facility includes classrooms, laboratories, faculty offices, and additional research space for both undergraduate and graduate research projects. The building features a state-of-the-art, climate-controlled environment, with safety ventilation systems and hazardous materials safeguards, along with a high-tech infrastructure for classrooms, laboratories, and distance learning facilities. A greenhouse and herbarium, housing the worlds largest collection of Virginia plant specimens, are located on the roof.
The health and physical education complex has a pool, dance studio, human-performance lab, and a 3,000-seat gymnasium. In addition, the complex offers eight tennis courts. A nine-hole golf course is several blocks from campus. A new Health and Fitness Center, opened in 2007, features a rock-climbing wall, a track, basketball and racquetball courts, and the newest weight machines.
A new Communication Studies and Theatre facility, currently under construction, is planned to house high-tech classrooms, media labs, studios, and black box theaters.
Costs
For the 200708 academic year, tuition, room, board, and fees were approximately $14,420 for Virginia residents and $22,654 for nonresidents who were enrolled full-time (at least 30 credit hours per year) and purchased a meal plan of fourteen meals per week.
Financial Aid
Longwood makes every effort to provide qualified students with the opportunity to attend college. Scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study programs are available. Students who submit completed applications by January15 are considered for scholarships ranging from $500 to full tuition, but competition is steep. Faculty
At Longwood, students receive personal attention from faculty members who really get to know themnot just their names. There are 247 faculty members, 84percent of whom are full-time; of these, 80percent hold a doctorate or terminal degree in their field. The student-faculty ratio is 19:1. The average class has 25 students, but one quarter of all classes have 10 or fewer students.
Student Government
The Student Government Association of Longwood University consists of a 34-member Senate, which includes a 6-member Executive Council. In accordance with the guidelines set forth by the Student Government Association Constitution, all students of Longwood University shall be members of this association. Thus, every student is considered to be represented by the Senatebut only the Senate may vote on an issue.
Admission Requirements
Admission decisions are competitive and based on a students academic performance in high school, grade point average, types of courses, class standing, and SAT or ACT scores. Additional information in support of the application is reviewed by the Admissions Committee. The average GPA for fall2007 freshmen was 3.32; the SAT midrange was between 1010 and 1200. Students should have completed at least 4years of English; 3years of math (algebraI, algebraII, and geometry); 3years of science (biology, chemistry, physics, physical science, or earth science), and 2units must include a lab; 3years of history or social studies; 2years of a foreign language (additional years of one language are strongly recommended); 2years of health and/or physical education; and 1year of fine or practical arts.
Students applying to transfer from another college must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 and at least 30 transferable credits, including course work in English, math, science, and history to be competitive. The average transfer GPA for fall2007 was 3.1.
Applicants must submit the completed application, the $40 nonrefundable application fee, official high school (and college, if applicable) transcripts, and SAT or ACT scores.
