Liberty University

The University

Founded in 1971 by Dr. Jerry Falwell, Liberty University (LU) provides a Christian, comprehensive, coeducational environment committed to serious education at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The University is situated on a 5,000-acre campus with complete classroom, residence, study, leisure, and recreational facilities. Liberty University is approved by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia and is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees. There are more than 9,558 undergraduate and graduate students in the traditional resident program. The student body represents all fifty states and more than eighty other countries, with 21percent of the student population representing minorities and international students.

Libertys facilities include the 4,000-seat Earl H. Schilling Center; the 12,000-seat A.L. Williams Stadium (football); the 10,000-seat Vines Center (mens and womens basketball and volleyball and convocation services); the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex, a superb outdoor-track facility; the Tolsma Indoor Track Center; Worthington Stadium, the baseball field; the new LaHaye Ice Center; the state-of-the-art, 83,968-square-foot LaHaye Student Center that includes a lounge, five full-length basketball courts, cardio and weight rooms, a cafe, multipurpose rooms, an aerobic room, and a 25-yard swimming pool and two spas; and the brand new Williams Football Operations Center, situated at the north end of Williams Stadium.

Intercollegiate athletic competition is in NCAA DivisionI. Men compete in baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, indoor track, soccer, tennis, track and field, and wrestling. Women compete in basketball, cross-country, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Other sports programs at the club level include ice hockey, lacrosse, and volleyball for men and lacrosse and ice hockey for women. Intramural competition is offered for both men and women in various sports, including Ultimate Frisbee and mens and womens flag football.

Residence halls include traditional-style hall housing, quad-living residences, and new apartment-style living within walking distance of main campus. These new apartments include full furnishings, a kitchen, laundry facilities, and the Campus East Clubhouse, which offers billiards, PlayStation, Xbox, satellite TV, a theater, a computer lounge, the Campus East Market, and a pool.

Liberty offers several majors in a wide variety of degrees on the graduate level, in addition to its baccalaureate and associate degree programs. The Master of Arts degree is offered in counseling and religious studies. Students who are interested in education can pursue a Master of Education and a Doctor of Education through Liberty. The Teacher Licensure Option is available at the graduate level in early childhood (NK3), elementary (K6), and secondary (712) education; administration/supervision; gifted education; reading; school counseling; and special education. In addition, a Master of Nursing degree and a Ph.D. program in professional counseling and pastoral care are also offered.

Through the Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary, the University offers the following graduate degrees: Master of Arts in Religion, Master of Religious Education, Master of Divinity, Master of Theology, and Doctor of Ministry.

Liberty Universitys School of Law opened in August2004 and graduated its first class in May2007. The American Bar Association (ABA) has granted provisional accreditation to Liberty University School of Law, which is housed in 122,000 square feet of allocated space in the Universitys Campus North facilityall advantageously located on the same level. At present, the law school comprises 79,100 square feet of the allocated space. The facility houses seven classrooms that are equipped with multimedia technology and wireless Internet access, two seminar rooms, a mock trial courtroom, the Ehrhorn Law Library, a study center with 24-hour student access, law review offices, seven professional skills rooms, an administrative suite, a faculty suite, and an academic support suite.

For international students, Liberty offers the English Language Institute (ELI). English grammar, comprehension, and reading are taught for international students with little or no English skills. An English Language Institute certification is awarded, and students are invited to enroll as a student at Liberty University once completed or while enrolled in the institute. Location

The University is located in the heart of Virginia in Lynchburg (population 68,000), with the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains as a backdrop. The city is more than 200 years old and is noted for its culture, beauty, and educational advantages. Nearby are such sites as Thomas Jeffersons Poplar Forest; Appomattox Court House; Natural Bridge; historic Lexington; Washington, D.C.; and other places of interest.

The city of Lynchburg offers a wide variety of activities for recreation and entertainment. Excellent sports facilities and programs, cultural events at the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center, beautiful lakes and streams, and many other local attractions enhance the lives of Lynchburg residents. Lynchburg also has more than 2,000 hotel rooms, numerous outlets and malls, and a number of restaurants that serve a wide variety of cuisines. Lynchburg is accessible by air, train, and bus.

The Bachelor of Science degree is offered in accounting, athletic training, aviation (commercial/corporate, military, and missions), biochemistry and molecular biology, biology (environmental science, general, molecular biology, and premed), business (economics, finance, international business, management, and marketing), communication studies (advertising/public relations, broadcasting, graphic design, journalism, and speech communication), computer engineering, computer science, criminal justice, electrical engineering, English, family and child development, family and consumer sciences (FACS), fashion merchandising and interiors, general studies, government (administration of justice, politics and policy, prelaw, and international relations), health promotion (CHES and clinical tracks), history (international studies), integrated studies (elementary, middle, and special education), industrial and systems engineering, interdisciplinary studies, kinesiology (exercise science, fitness science, and health and physical education), management information systems, mathematics, nursing, psychology (adult development, child/adolescent development, clinical/experimental, human services counseling, and industrial/organization), religion (biblical studies, childrens ministries, cross-cultural studies, pastoral leadership, womens ministries, and youth ministries), social sciences, software engineering, sport management, visual communication arts, Web technology and design, and worship and music studies (biblical studies, business, cross-cultural studies, drama ministries, pastoral leadership, womens ministry, worship leadership, and worship technology). Secondary teaching licensure is available in several degree programs.

The Bachelor of Arts degree is offered in English, general studies, history (international studies), interdisciplinary studies, pastoral leadership and biblical exposition, philosophy and religion (biblical studies and philosophy), Spanish, teaching English as a second/foreign language (TESL), and theater arts (acting, drama ministry, musical theater, and production).

The Bachelor of Music degree is offered in choral music and instrumental music.

The Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree is available in criminal justice, general studies, and religion.

Minors are available in accounting, aviation, biblical Greek, biblical studies, biology, business, chemistry, coaching, communication studies (advertising/public relations, journalism, and speech), computer science, criminal justice, cross-cultural studies, English, enterprise data analysis, family and consumer sciences (clothing and textiles, general, family and child development, and foods and nutrition), French, government, health promotion, history, kinesiology, management information systems, mathematics, music (brass, percussion, and woodwind), music (church ministries and liberal arts), music (keyboard, strings, and voice), philosophy, psychology, sociology, Spanish, special education, sport management, theater arts, theology, womens ministries, and youth ministries.

The Teacher Licensure Option is available at the elementary (K6), middle school (68), and secondary (712) levels in biology, business, computer science, English, history/social sciences, mathematics, and work and family studies and at the comprehensive (K12) level in teaching English as a second language, health/physical education, music (choral or instrumental), and special education.

Academic Programs

A minimum of 120 semester hours is required for the B.S., while a minimum of 123 semester hours is necessary for the B.A. In addition to the major, the student must complete general education courses in humanities, natural sciences and mathematics, social sciences, physical education, and religion. The A.A. requires a minimum of 64 semester hours.

Liberty is on the early semester calendar. During the summer, there are several one- and two-week modular classes offered. Winter modulars are also offered between semesters.

The University also offers higher education degrees for the adult learner through home study. Libertys Distance Learning Program (DLP) is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees. Academic Facilities

The Arthur S. DeMoss Learning Center, the academic hub of the campus, is a 500,000-square-foot Jeffersonian-style building that encompasses nearly all academic aspects of the University. All academic rooms are wired for Internet access, with large computer screens installed for interactive learning. This impressive facility is one of the largest academic buildings in central Virginia and houses the campus library, which currently contains 283,000 bound or microfilmed volumes. Students may find employment or volunteer their services in the Universitys 50,000-watt FM radio station or student-run radio and TV stations. The Fine Arts Hall houses the Lloyd Auditorium, which has a seating capacity of 315 as well as a recital hall and several practice rooms.

Ehrhorn Law Library currently occupies more than 34,000 square feet of the Law Schools facility. Features include a forty-seat computer lab, an online legal research instructional room with sixteen computer stations, four group-study rooms, a faculty reading room, two special collections rooms, and a large reference-reading area that serves as the physical center of the law library.

The computer structure of the campus allows each student to reach professors, various campus offices, and the Internet from residence hall rooms. Liberty also offers wireless capabilities in each academic building. The plan to make the campus completely wireless is in progress, and quite a few residence halls already have wireless access.

Costs

Tuition, room, board (twenty-six meals per week), and activity/student center fees for 200708 were $21,200 for 12 to 18 credit hours per semester. The estimated cost for books per semester was $450. A technology fee of $250 per semester provides each student with an e-mail address and high-speed Internet access in the residence hall. It also gives the student unlimited access to the many computer labs around the campus. The average student paid $14,000, based on Liberty Universitys generous scholarships.

Additional fees, such as lab fees, are required for specific classes and are listed in the class registration book. Automobiles are permitted if they are registered and a fee of $150 per semester has been paid. The student activity fee of $225 per semester (included in the yearly cost above as a total amount of $450), gives students unlimited access to the LaHaye Student Center, workout facilities, Christian concerts, and much more.

Financial Aid

A variety of grants, scholarships, and on-campus jobs are available at Liberty. All federally funded student financial aid programs, except the Federal Perkins Loan Program, are available. Athletic, academic, merit, talent, Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), National Merit, and other Liberty University assistance grants are also available for qualified candidates. Students are required to submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the U.S. Department of Education and include Liberty Universitys school code (010392) on that application. This is the students application for all financial aid. Approximately 90percent of the student body received some type of aid last year.

Liberty offers generous scholarships, grants, and other financial aid to all students. Students should contact the University about financial aid opportunities. Liberty also partners with many Christian ministries around the world, offering scholarships to participating students.

Faculty

About 300 different colleges and universities worldwide are represented in the education of the Liberty faculty. The average Liberty faculty member has more than thirteen years of teaching experience. Courses are taught by faculty members.

Student Government

Students elect representatives to serve on the Student Senate. This group provides recommendations and suggestions to the student development staff. Student Senate members also organize and direct activities and civic programs.

Admission Requirements

All applicants should be familiar with Libertys philosophy and expectations before applying. Applicants to the A.A., B.A., and B.S. programs must be high school graduates and must submit two official copies of the high school transcript, indicating graduation date (or GED test scores, if applicable). Applicants must also submit either ACT or SAT scores, which are used for academic counseling and placement. High school transcripts and SAT/ACT requirements are waived if the student transfers 60hours or holds an associate degree. Test scores are also waived if the applicant is 22 years of age or older. The applicant must demonstrate the ability to do college work. Three personal references may be requested if needed. Although interviews are not required, prospective students are encouraged to visit the campus. Four College For A Weekend events are available each year, giving prospective students an opportunity to participate in classes, attend social and athletic events, experience residence hall life, and interact with students and faculty members.
