The College

Established in 1968 as a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY), Lehman offers more than ninety undergraduate and graduate degree programs and specializations in business administration, computer graphics and imaging, liberal arts, natural and social sciences, education, nursing and health professions, social work, and the fine and performing arts. Many programs provide training for particular careers and lead to professional degrees, preparing students for positions in private, nonprofit, and government organizations as well as for graduate study.

Lehman offers more than thirty masters degree programs, including those in art; biological sciences; early childhood and childhood education; economics, accounting, and business administration; English; health sciences; history; mathematics; middle and high school education; music; nursing; plant sciences (Ph.D.); sociology and social work; specialized services in education; and speech-language-hearing sciences. In addition, there are several advanced certificate programs and two new programs, the Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) and Master of Public Health (M.P.H.).

Lehman offers an active, diversified, and supportive campus life. Organized around various cultural, religious, political, academic, and personal interests, more than sixty clubs are housed in a Student Life Building that also features computer, conference, kitchen, and recreation areas. Many of these activities give students valuable experiences both for careers and for life. Through counseling and additional support services, students find the answers to academic and career questions, while a Child Care Center, a Student Health Center, and an Office of Disability Services help meet a variety of other needs.

Lehman serves as a regional center for the arts and recreation. The campus has a 2,300-seat concert hall, a 500-seat theater, a 150-seat recital hall, and an art gallery. In addition, the campus publishes several newspapers and hosts a radio station and a cable television station. The APEX, a sports and recreation facility, includes a fully equipped fitness center; a free-weight room; two full-size gymnasiums; four racquetball courts; a two-lane, 1/14-mile indoor track; an aerobics/dance studio; a ballet studio; an Olympic-size indoor swimming pool; and five outdoor tennis courts.

Academic Programs

Lehman College offers 120-credit Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Business Administration degrees and a dual Bachelor of Arts/Master of Arts in mathematics. Many of these programs include course work and fieldwork that lead to professional certification. These programs include the B.S. in accountingcertified public accountant; dietetics, foods, and nutritiondietitian; education (elementary)elementary school teacher (N6); education (secondary)secondary school teacher in academic subjects; health education and promotionhealth education specialist and health N12 teacher; health services administrationnursing home administrator; professional nursingregistered nurse; recreation educationtherapeutic recreation specialist and certified leisure professional; and speech educationteacher of the speech and hearing handicapped. Lehman also offers courses that lead to graduate programs for professional certification, including predentistry, prelaw, premedicine, prepharmacy, preveterinary science, and social work; these Lehman programs include a professional option that allows students to complete the undergraduate degree at an accredited professional school in their senior year. In addition, a pre-engineering transfer program is offered in cooperation with the School of Engineering at City College.

The baccalaureate programs include courses in English composition, natural sciences, mathematics, and foreign language. Students must also complete distribution courses in seven major areas of study, two upper-division interdisciplinary courses, and a set of writing-intensive classes. In addition to fulfilling the requirements of a major, most students are also required to select a minor field of study. All students also must be in compliance with CUNY testing requirements.

Lehman offers an array of exciting programs designed to challenge its students and meet their intellectual needs. The Freshman Year Initiative (FYI) is an award-winning, nationally recognized program offering first-year students a supportive and carefully structured college experience. All first-year students participate in the program, which promotes an interdisciplinary curriculum, faculty collaboration, and peer support. Behind FYI is the idea that people learn better, and benefit from reinforced social and academic support, when they are integrated into learning communities. During their first and second semesters, students take a set of integrated courses with the same group of fellow students. Faculty members teaching the courses meet regularly to collaborate on assignments and lesson plans in order to ensure thematic and conceptual linkages across the curriculum. The learning communities also foster connections between students and faculty members and promote the development of peer support networks during the first college year. Students interested in premed, teacher education, and the performing arts, as well as prospective majors in accounting, business administration, nursing, psychology, or sociology, may request placement in a learning community targeted to their planned field of study. Students who qualify, based on combined SAT scores, may be placed in honors blocks.

The Macaulay Honors College at Lehman challenges students to continue their record of high achievement and prepares them for top graduate and professional programs. Honors College students are chosen from a highly competitive field of applicants who demonstrate exceptional academic skills. The new Teacher Academy at Lehman is geared toward training and rewarding the mathematics and science teachers of tomorrow. Students are selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants with exceptional academic skills and a passion for mathematics or science. The academy offers four years of free tuition and no fees for students who graduate and teach at least two years in New York City public schools, paid internships ($1600 each year) to work with high school or middle school students, opportunities to study and do research in math or science with exceptional CUNY faculty members, hands-on experiences in New York City public middle schools or high schools, a full-time teaching position in a New York City middle school or high school after successful completion of the program, and, for a select group of academy graduates, support for a masters degree in their field at a CUNY college. The Lehman Scholars Program (LSP), for capable and highly motivated students possessing the desire and ability to pursue a somewhat more traditional liberal arts course of study, offers the advantages of a small, intimate college: special courses, seminars, and individual counseling. Students are exempt from Lehman general education requirements; they must, however, pass the CUNY Skills Assessment Tests to be admitted to the program and meet all course prerequisites and major requirements. Students takea one-semester honors course in English composition; two years of a foreign language at the college level or its equivalent; four honors seminars, three at the 100 level and one at the 300 level, from the four different academic areasfine and performing arts, humanities, natural science, and social science; and a senior honors essay. Each student entering the program is assigned to a faculty mentor, who advises the student in the areas of program planning and academic and career goals.

The Adult Degree Program at Lehman, designed to meet the special needs of mature men and women with family and work responsibilities, schedules classes for days, evenings, and weekends. Faculty counselors help students choose a course of study toward their individual career goal. College credits may be awarded for life experience, including current paid or volunteer work. Courses are offered to refresh writing, reading, and math skills and prepare the students for college-level work.

The academic calendar is divided into fall and spring semesters, with two summer sessions. There is also a new winter session.

Off-Campus Programs

Through a cooperative arrangement, students may take courses at other colleges within the City University of New York, one of the nations most distinguished and extensive university systems. Off-campus internships are available through the academic departments and the Career Services Office. Opportunities for overseas study are available for an intersession, a semester, or an academic year through sponsored trips and the Study-Abroad and Paris/CUNY Exchange Programs.

Academic Facilities

Lehmans 37-acre campus is dominated by Gothic towers and tree-lined walks, where a blend of traditional and modern design helps reinforce the Colleges sense of community. This sense of community is further enhanced by the computers (including personal and multiuser systems) available for student use in the Information Technology Center, the library, and departmental facilities that provide access to general-purpose and specialized-application software, local and regional networks, and the Internet. Audio/video reception/distribution capability via satellite and other means is available in many classrooms, as are specialized facilities to support multimedia, distance learning, and high-end graphics capabilities. The library offers an open-stack book collection of 572,000 volumes that is supplemented by 713,500 microforms and a growing collection of 5,391 films and videotapes. The library also subscribes to 1,535 print periodicals and more than 13,000 electronic journals.

Costs

Eligible New York State residents who are matriculated students pay $2000 per semester for full-time study, which is at least 12 credits or credit equivalents; $170 per credit for matriculated part-time study; or $250 per credit for nonmatriculated study. Nonresidents and international students pay $360 per credit for full-time and part-time matriculated study and $530 per credit for nonmatriculated study. Each semester, all students must pay a student activity fee. The fee is $55 for full-time students, $35 for part-time students for the fall and spring semesters, and $30 during the summer sessions. Each semester, students pay a $15 consolidated service fee and a technology fee. The technology fee is $75 for full-time students and $37.50 for part-time students.

Financial Aid

Lehman College participates in federal and New York State financial aid programs. Students may request aid by filing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for consideration for the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), SEEK, Federal Work-Study Program, and federal student loans. New York State residents may also apply for the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). Lehman recommends filing for aid electronically at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. The College also offers various scholarships. Other scholarships and awards are tied to specific areas of study; students in eligible fields of study are given assistance in pursuing federal scholarship programs.

Faculty

The College has more than 300 full-time faculty members, of whom 83 percent hold doctoral degrees or their equivalent. Many have been recognized nationally and internationally for their scholarship and research through grants and awards; a significant number serve as faculty members at CUNYs graduate center. Most important, faculty members work closely with students outside the classroom in individual and group settings to support their academic, professional, and personal growth. The faculty-student ratio is 1:15.

Student Government

Lehmans student government is divided into the Campus Association for Student Activities (CASA), the programming arm of the student government, and the Student Conference, the legislative arm of the student government. CASA officers are responsible for the appropriation and management of student funds for clubs, cultural programs, entertainment, and other activities. The Student Conference makes up approximately one third of the Lehman College Senate, the decision-making body on matters of academic policy.

Admission Requirements

Candidates for freshman admission are considered based on the overall strength of their academic preparation, grades in individual subjects, cumulative high school averages, and SAT or ACT scores. The College recommends completion of 4 years of English, 4 years of social studies, 3 years of mathematics, 2 years of a foreign language, 2 years of laboratory sciences, and 1 year of performing or visual arts as the minimum academic preparation for success in college. Applicants who do not meet these freshman admission requirements but who satisfy particular academic and economic criteria may be eligible for admission through the SEEK program, the City Universitys opportunity program for senior colleges.

Transfer students who have earned at least 13 credits must have an overall cumulative average of at least 2.0 in all previous college work. Students transferring with fewer than 13 credits must have an overall cumulative average of at least 2.5 and meet the requirements for freshman admission.

Applicants with student or other nonimmigrant visas who were not educated in an English-speaking system are required to score a minimum of 500 on the paper-based or 173 on the computer-based TOEFL.
