The University

Founded by brothers Russell and E. George Lawrence in 1932 on the site where Henry Ford perfected the moving assembly line, Lawrence Technological University has traditionally provided students a high-quality, affordable education with an emphasis on theory and practice. The University, including the graduate programs in business, architecture, and engineering, is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Appropriate national professional agencies provide additional accreditation to various degree programs in architecture, interior architecture/design, imaging (digital arts and digital design), administration and management, chemistry, and engineering.

The University offers certificates and associate, bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees through the colleges of Architecture and Design, Arts and Sciences, Engineering, and Management. An honors program is available to highly qualified and motivated students. A private university, Lawrence Tech offers a highly competitive tuition rate, modern facilities, and real-world application of textbook knowledge. The 102-acre campus is located at the hub of one of Americas great technological and industrial centers and near sites of some of the worlds most significant manufacturing and engineering accomplishments.

Nearly 5,000 students attend Lawrence Tech, of whom approximately 600 live in on-campus housing. Women make up 24 percent of the student body, and twenty-five states and twenty-five countries are represented on campus.

Numerous fraternities, sororities, and social and professional organizations sponsor a variety of activities during the year. Recreational facilities include the Don Ridler Field House, which features a fitness track, a gymnasium, racquetball courts, a game room, saunas, and a weight and conditioning room. Intramural and club sports teams in basketball, billiards, curling, flag football, hockey, indoor soccer, racquetball, softball, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, and wallyball are active throughout the academic year. Lawrence Techs campus includes twelve major buildings, all built since 1955. The campus has more than doubled in size since 1981.

Location

Southfield is a suburb of more than 78,000 people, a center of corporate and industrial activity, and a city that provides a pleasant balance between big-city entertainment opportunities and a quiet residential atmosphere. Southfields daytime population of commuting workers swells to nearly 175,000. The Lawrence Tech campus is conveniently close to major freeways and about a 30-minute drive north of downtown Detroit. Southeastern Michigan offers a rich variety of recreational and cultural activities, with public transportation making most areas accessible to students.

Within a few miles of the campus, students can find many restaurants, parks, shopping areas, and recreational facilities. Research, manufacturing, scientific, and business enterprises are also located nearby, aiding students in co-op and internship programs as well as those who work full- or part-time while attending classes. More than 200 Fortune500 companies have headquarters or business operations in the Detroit metropolitan area.

Majors and Degrees

Lawrence Tech offers nearly eighty majors or course concentrations. Most programs are available during the day or evening; some are offered online and on the weekends. Dual majors and customized degree programs combining either associate and bachelors programs or bachelors and masters programs are also available. Preprofessional programs are offered in dentistry, law, and medicine.

The College of Architecture and Design offers bachelors degrees in architecture, imaging (concentrations in digital arts and digital design), interior architecture, and transportation design. Lawrence Tech enrolls more architectural students than any other school in Michigan, and its program is among the top 10 in the nation.

The College of Arts and Sciences awards bachelors degrees in business management, chemical biology, chemistry, computer science, English and communication arts, environmental chemistry, humanities, mathematics, mathematics and computer science, media communication, molecular and cell biology, physics, physics and computer science, and psychology. Associate degrees are offered in chemical technology, general studies, and radio and television broadcasting. Minors offered are business management, chemistry, computer science, economics, English, general sciences, history, mathematics, philosophy, physics, psychology, Spanish, and technical and professional communication. Certificates can be earned in entrepreneurial strategy, industrial/organizational psychology, leadership and change management, and technical and professional communication.

The College of Arts and Sciences also offers students the opportunity to participate in Quest, an experimental learning program that engages them in unique projects beyond the requirements of their courses and results in an official narrative transcript in addition to their traditional transcript.

The College of Engineering offers bachelors degrees in biomedical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, construction management, electrical engineering (concentrations in computer engineering, electronics engineering, and energy engineering), engineering technology, industrial operations engineering, and mechanical engineering (concentrations in automotive engineering, manufacturing, mechanical system design, and thermal system design).

The College of Engineering offers evening associate programs in communications engineering technology, construction engineering technology, manufacturing engineering technology, and mechanical engineering technology.

Also available in the college are minors in aeronautical engineering and energy engineering and certificates in aeronautical engineering, energy engineering, and entrepreneurship. The Lear Entrepreneurial Center teaches engineering students how to create, promote, and bring to market products and services. Lawrence Techs mechanical engineering program ranks among the largest 10percent in the nation.

The College of Management awards a Bachelor of Science degree in information technology.

Academic Programs

Graduation from Lawrence Technological Universitys undergraduate programs requires the completion of a degree program with an overall GPA of at least 2.0. Most disciplines combine a strong concentration in the major with a core curriculum of natural science, social science, humanities, and mathematics requirements. Also integrated into all undergraduate programs of study is preparation for leadership and entrepreneurship. The University operates on a semester calendar.

Off-Campus Programs

Lawrence Tech chemistry, computer science, engineering, and technology students may participate in co-op programs, alternating semesters of classes and work. Internships are also available.

The University also offers programs at Education Centers in southeastern and northern Michigan as well as international programs in Asia, Canada, Europe, and the Middle East

The Detroit Studio gives architecture students the opportunity to explore community-based architectural, urban design, and community development projects. Architecture students also regularly build homes for Habitat for Humanity.

The Paris Summer Study-Abroad Program is open to junior and senior architecture students. Students explore Paris and study in cooperation with an international architectural design studio and seminar.

The Global Engineering Program arranges for Lawrence Tech engineering students to work and study abroad and brings international engineering students to campus for further study.

Academic Facilities

Lawrence Tech is Michigans first wireless laptop campus and is ranked among the nations top 50 unwired universities. All undergraduates are provided high-end laptops customized with the software they need for their academic specialty. Other computers, workstations, terminals, and microcomputers are located in campus labs.

The library houses a broad selection of books, periodical titles, electronic databases, and microforms and is part of a nationwide network of more than 6,000 libraries that share resources via computer. The University also houses the personal library of renowned architect Albert Kahn. Lawrence Tech is surrounded by numerous outstanding municipal and research libraries, many with reciprocal borrowing privileges.

Facilities include architectural and design studios; senior project lab and studio space; fabrication labs; a wind tunnel; wood, metal, and model shops; dedicated labs for constructing Baja- and Formula-style competition vehicles; chemistry, biomedical, and biology labs; an anechoic chamber for sound studies; a structural testing center; alternative energy, mechanical, and electrical labs; a thermal dynamic lab; a graphics lab; a clay modeling studio; and the DENSO Instructional Technology Lab.

Lawrence Tech also owns a nearby Frank Lloyd Wrightdesigned home that is used as a study center.

The A. Alfred Taubman Student Services Center consolidates all student support servicesfrom admissions through career servicesinto a convenient one-stop center. This innovative 42,000-square-foot center also utilizes many energy-efficient and environmentally friendly features and technologies, serving as a living laboratory. Students can study its geothermal walls; bioswale; water-recycling system; its exterior skin, designed to reduce heat loss and maximize daylight without succumbing to excessive heat gain; and its multilayer living roof, planted with drought-resistant groundcovers.

The Center for Innovative Materials Research is a state-of-the-art laboratory for the research, development, and testing of composite materials for defense and infrastructure applications. Students participate in related research projects as part of their academic programs.

The Automotive Engineering Institute provides students opportunities to conduct sponsored research on a unique 4 x 4 vehicle chassis dynamometer, which measures many areas of vehicle performance.

Costs

Tuition for all undergrads includes a high-powered laptop computer. The 200708 tuition for students majoring in arts and sciences and management was $629 per credit hour for freshmen and $653 per credit hour for sophomores. The tuition for juniors and seniors majoring in arts and sciences and management was $682 per credit hour. In architecture and design and engineering, tuition for freshmen and sophomores was $682 per credit hour; for juniors and seniors, it was $704 per credit hour.

A normal course load is 1217 credit hours per semester. The undergraduate registration fee is $115 each semester. International students on temporary visas must have sufficient funds to pay for an entire year of tuition, room and board, and books at the time of first registration. Additional fees for specific labs and studio courses vary.

Financial Aid

Approximately 70 percent of full-time students receive some form of financial assistance, and the University awards nearly $30 million in scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study funds each academic year. Many privately funded scholarships are awarded to qualified students, based on need and/or scholastic performance. Part-time employment is available at the University on a first-come, first-served basis for full-time students. Student loans are also available from a variety of sourcesstate, federal, and private. Faculty

Approximately 448 full- and part-time faculty members teach at Lawrence Tech. Many part-time faculty members hold full-time jobs in industry and bring their real-world perspective to the classroom. More than 80 percent of the full-time faculty members hold a doctoral degree or the terminal degree in their field. Faculty involvement is extensive in student chapters of professional associations that meet on campus. Many faculty members are active and/or registered professionals in their fields. Lawrence Techs student-faculty ratio is 13:1. Most classes average 19 or fewer students, and less than 1 percent of the classes have more than 50.

Student Government

The Student Government sponsors and supports a variety of campus activities. It oversees expenditures, meets regularly to plan events, and is authorized to levy fines for minor, on-campus infractions. More than fifty student clubs and organizations, including fraternities, sororities, honor societies, and student chapters of professional groups, are active on campus.

Admission Requirements

A high school diploma or the equivalent is required of all students applying to baccalaureate or associate degree programs. Most baccalaureate applicants must have a minimum 2.5 overall GPA in academic subjects; architecture students must have a minimum 2.75 overall GPA. Applicants to associate degree programs are required to have a minimum 2.0 average in four academic areas (English, mathematics, social science, and natural science) combined. ACT or SAT results are required of all entering freshmen. Required high school courses vary with the curriculum, and Lawrence Tech offers a number of basic studies courses designed to augment incoming students backgrounds if deficiencies exist.
