Founded in 1919, Kettering University is a private university specializing in technical degrees. The school enrolls about 2,300 undergraduate students and offers a 9:1 student-faculty ratio. Most classes have fewer than 20 students and are taught by Ph.D.-level professors, not teaching assistants. Kettering has the only cooperative program of its kind where students begin working as early as their freshman year. Besides being academically ahead of the game, Kettering students bring a wide range of skills and interests with them to campus. To make sure that students get a life along with an education, Kettering offers more than fifty student organizations, including fourteen fraternities and six sororities, an active student government, a state-of-the-art recreation and fitness facility, and some competitive intramural sports. Recreation facilities include athletic fields, tennis courts, and a recreation center with an Olympic-size, six-lane swimming pool; aerobic fitness rooms; a full line of Nautilus equipment; and basketball, tennis, and racquetball courts. Location

Kettering University is located in Flint, Michigan, which is 60 miles west of Lake Huron and 60 miles north of Detroit. Flint has approximately 115,000 residents and a metropolitan area population of 450,000.

Flint is particularly proud of its Cultural Center, which is only 10 minutes from Ketterings campus. Built and endowed entirely by the gifts of private citizens, the Cultural Center includes the Alfred P. Sloan Museum, the Whiting Auditorium (home of the Flint Symphony and host to leading stage shows and entertainers), the Robert T. Longway Planetarium (Michigans largest and best-equipped sky show facility), the Flint Institute of Arts, the F.A. Bower Theater, the Dort Institute of Music, Mott Community College, and the Flint Public Library. Nearby is the University of MichiganFlint campus.

Majors and Degrees

Kettering University offers a 4-year, professional, cooperative education program with Bachelor of Science degrees in applied mathematics, applied physics, biochemistry, business, chemistry, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, engineering physics, industrial engineering, and mechanical engineering.

Kettering also offers a variety of dual-degree programs and enough minors, specialties, and concentrations to ensure that students degrees are custom-fit to their interests and career goals.

Academic Programs

Although each program at Kettering University has its own requirements, 160 credit hours are generally required for graduation. The program involves nine academic terms and nine co-op terms, two of which are focused on the capstone thesis project, which is a major work project assigned by the co-op employer. Students alternate between eleven-week periods of academic study on the campus in Flint and twelve-week periods of related work experience with their corporate employer. The academic year consists of two 3-month academic terms on campus and two 3-month terms of paid work experience.

Academic Facilities

Kettering University offers some of the best facilities, labs, and educational resources in the world, and students start using them as early as their freshman year. The Crash Safety Center, for example, is the only one of its kind in the nation used in an undergraduate program. The University also offers labs in areas such as fuel-cell research, polymer optimization, machining, and acoustics.

Kettering is fully networked and allows 24-hour access to computer resources and the Internet from dorms and labs. A 445-student residence hall and a new apartment complex are located on the campus for student housing. The library offers more than 94,000 cataloged volumes and 540 periodicals. Admission Requirements

Admission to Kettering University is competitive and based on scholastic achievement and extracurricular interests, activities, and achievements. Applicants are required to have earned the following: 3 years of English, 2 years algebra, 1 year of geometry, 1 semester of trigonometry, 2 years of lab science (1 must be physics or chemistry; both are recommended). Applicants must submit results of the SAT or ACT (Ketterings ACT code number is 1998 and the SAT code number is 1246).
