The College

Located on Long Islands North Shore, Five Towns College offers students the opportunity to study in a suburban environment that is close to New York City. Founded in 1972, Five Towns College is an independent, nonsectarian, coeducational institution that places its emphasis on the student as an individual. Many students are drawn to the College because of its strong reputation in music, media, and the performing arts. The College offers associate, bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees. The College also offers programs leading to the Master of Music (M.M.) degree in jazz/commercial music and in music education as well as a masters in elementary education (M.S.Ed.) and a doctorate in musical arts (D.M.A.).

From as far away as England and Japan and from as close as Long Island and New York City, the 1,000 full-time students reflect a rich cultural diversity. The Colleges enrollment is 60 percent men and 40 percent women, with a minority population of approximately 30 percent. The Colleges music programs are contemporary jazz in nature, although classical musicians are also part of this creative community. The most popular programs are audio recording technology, broadcasting, journalism, music performance, music business, music and elementary teacher education, theater, and film/video production.

Coeducational living accommodations are available on campus. The Five Towns College Living/Learning Center is a brand-new complex containing modern dormitories. Each residence hall contains single- and double-occupancy rooms equipped with private bathrooms, broadband Internet access, cable television, and other amenities.

Location

The Colleges beautiful 40-acre campus, located in the wooded countryside of Dix Hills, New York, provides students with a parklike refuge where they can pursue their studies. Just off campus is Long Islands bustling Route 110 corridor, home to numerous national and multinational corporations. New York City, with everything from Lincoln Center to Broadway, is just a train ride away and provides students with some of the best cultural advantages in the world.

Closer to the campus, the many communities of Long Island abound with cultural and recreational opportunities. The College is located within the historic town of Huntington, which is home to the Cinema Arts Center, InterMedia Arts Center, Hecksher Museum, Vanderbilt Museum, and numerous restaurants, coffeehouses, and quaint shops. The nearby shores of Jones Beach State Park and the Fire Island National Seashore are world renowned for their white, sandy beaches.

Majors and Degrees

Five Towns College offers the Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree in liberal arts, with concentrations in teaching assistant studies and theater arts; the Associate in Science (A.S.) degree in business administration; and the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in business management and in jazz commercial music, with concentrations in accounting, audio recording technology, computer business applications, and music business.

The College offers the Bachelor of Music (Mus.B.) degree in music education and in jazz/commercial music, with concentrations in audio recording technology, composition/songwriting, music business, musical theater, and performance; the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree in theater or film/video arts; the Bachelor of Professional Studies (B.P.S.) degree in business management, with concentrations in audio recording technology and music business; the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in childhood education; and the B.S. in mass communication, which features broadcasting and journalism concentrations.

Academic Programs

The music education program is designed for students interested in a career as a teacher of music in a public or private school. The undergraduate program leads to New York State provisional certification. The course work provides professional training and includes a student-teaching experience. The audio recording technology concentration is designed to provide students with the tools needed to succeed as professional studio engineers and producers in the music industry. The music business concentration is designed for students interested in a career in entertainment-related business fields. The course work includes the technical, legal, production, management, and merchandising aspects of the music business. The composition/songwriting concentration provides intensive instruction in a core of technical studies in harmony, orchestration, counterpoint, MIDI, songwriting, form and analysis, arranging, and composition for those who intend to pursue careers as composers, arrangers, and songwriters. The performance concentration includes a common core of technical studies and a foundation of specialized courses, such as music history, harmony, counterpoint, improvisation, ensemble performance, and private instruction. The theater arts program is designed for students interested in careers as actors, entertainers, scenic designers, directors, stage managers, and lighting or sound directors. The film/video program includes extensive technical preparation in videography, filmmaking, linear and nonlinear editing, storyboarding, scriptwriting, producing, and directing for filmmakers and videographers. Elementary education students are prepared as teachers for grades 16, while those interested in journalism and broadcasting are prepared for careers in radio, television, newspaper, and editorial writing.

To earn a bachelors degree, students must accumulate between 122 and 130 credits, depending on the program of study, with a proper distribution of courses and a GPA of at least 2.0. To earn an associate degree, students must accumulate between 62 and 66 credits.

Off-Campus Programs

Off-campus internship opportunities are available to Five Towns College students who have fulfilled the necessary prerequisites, including a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5, with a 3.0 in their major. In recent semesters, students have interned for major corporations such as MTV, Atlantic Records, Polygram Records, CBS, ABC, EMI Records, MCA Records, Sony Records, The Power Station, Pyramid Recording Studios, Channel12 News, and many others.

Academic Facilities

Five Towns College occupies a multiwinged facility that comprises approximately 120,000 square feet and includes a 500-seat auditorium, production studios, athletic and dining facilities, classrooms, PC and Mac computer labs, and a student center. T-3 lines connect the Colleges completely fiber-optic computer network to the Internet. All students have access to this network and are provided with an e-mail account.

The Five Towns College Library has more than 35,000 print and nonprint materials. These include nearly 30,000 books and print items, 500 periodical subscriptions, and approximately 5,000 records, 2,500 videos and DVDs, and more than 2,000 CDs. Through its membership in the Long Island Library Resource Council (LILRC), students have access to other libraries around the country.

The Technical Wing at Five Towns College consists of eleven studio/control rooms. These facilities house the Colleges state-of-the-art 72-channel SL9000J audio board, 48-track SSL and 24-track digital recording studios, and the Electronic Music-MIDI Studio. The Film/Video Studio utilizes Beta Sp, SVHS video formats, and the 16mm film format. Nonlinear edit suites utilize the Media 100 XS and XR operating systems on Macintosh G4 platforms. Students utilize these facilities to develop their skills while creating professional-quality productions, both in the studio and on location, under the supervision of industry professionals. Student productions include CDs, music videos, documentaries, sitcoms, public service announcements, commercials, and talk shows, among many others.

The Dix Hills Center for Performing Arts at Five Towns College is an acoustically perfect venue, with digital lighting systems, digital sound reinforcement for concert production, and a Barco 6300 digital projection system for multimedia productions. The professional stage is 60 feet wide, with a proscenium opening of 16feet and 32feet of fly space. Students utilize this facility to produce live concerts, plays, musicals, and other performances and special presentations.

Costs

The tuition for 200708 was $16,400 per year. Miscellaneous fees cost approximately $400, and books cost about $700. Private instruction fees for performing music students were $675 per semester.

Financial Aid

The annual tuition at Five Towns College is among the lowest of all the private colleges in the region. Nevertheless, approximately 72 percent of all students receive some form of financial assistance. Need-based and/or merit-based grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study programs are available to qualified recipients, including transfer students. Prospective students are urged to contact the Financial Aid Office as early as possible.

Faculty

The Colleges growing faculty consists of 110 full- and part-time members. The student-faculty ratio is 14:1. While the faculty is more strongly committed to teaching than to research, many members continue to be active in their respective areas of expertise.

Student Government

The Student Council (SC) serves as the representative governance body for all studentls. The SC consists of an elected president and vice president and 9 elected at-large representatives, who select from among themselves a secretary and a treasurer. The Student Council charters clubs and organizations, allocates student activity fees, and recommends policies that affect student life. There is also a Dormitory Council.

Admission Requirements

The College encourages applications from students who will engage themselves in its creative community and who will contribute to the academic debate with honor and integrity. Students seeking a seat in the entering class of students should have attained a minimum high school average grade of 80 percent. The SAT or ACT exam is required for all freshmen. Transfer students must also submit official transcripts of all college-level work attempted. International students from non-English-speaking countries must submit a paper-based TOEFL score of at least 550 or its equivalent. Students may be admitted for deferred entrance or with advanced standing. The College does not accept students on an early admissions basis, although early decision is available. Candidates for admission must submit a completed Application for Undergraduate Admission, official high school transcripts, at least two letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. International students must submit additional information and should contact the Foreign Student Advisor.
