The Institute

The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) is New York Citys celebrated urban college for creative and business talent. A selective State University of New York (SUNY) college of art and design, business, and technology, FIT is a creative axis for a rich mix of innovative achievers, original thinkers, and industry pioneers, with nearly forty programs of study leading to the A.A.S., B.F.A., and B.S. degrees. The School of Graduate Studies offers six programs leading to either a Master of Arts (M.A.) or Master of Professional Studies (M.P.S.) degree. The college is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, National Association of Schools of Art and Design, and Council for Interior Design Accreditation.

FIT serves approximately 10,000 students from the Greater New York metropolitan area, across the country, and around the world, offering full- and part-time study options, evening/weekend programs, and online studies. The college provides a singular approach to higher educationbalancing a real-world-based curriculum and hands-on instruction with a rigorous liberal arts foundation, marrying design and business, supporting individual creativity in a collaborative environment, and encouraging faculty members to match pedagogy with professional experience. All full-time, matriculated students are eligible for FIT housing. Four residence halls house 2,300 in fully furnished single-, double-, triple-, and quad-occupancy rooms. Each residence hall has centrally located lounges and laundry facilities; George and Marianna Kaufman Residence Hall also provides an on-site fitness center. Students have the option of either traditional (meal plan included) or apartment-style accommodations. Counselors and student staff members live in the halls, helping students adjust to college life and living in New York City.

Throughout the David Dubinsky Student Center are lounges, a game room, a student radio station, the Style Shop (the FIT student-run boutique), student government and club offices, a comprehensive health center, two gyms, a dance studio, a weight room, and a counseling center.

Location

FITs extraordinary location at the center of New York Cityworld capital of the arts, business, and mediaallows it to maintain close ties with the professions it serves. The campus comprises an entire city block in Manhattans Chelsea neighborhood, and the college makes extensive use of the citys vast resources, providing students with unrivaled internship opportunities and valuable professional connections. Majors and Degrees

FIT offers fifteen Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) and twenty-two baccalaureate programs. All students complete a two-year A.A.S. program in their major area of study and the liberal arts and then typically continue in a related, two-year Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) program. If students choose, they may begin their careers with the A.A.S. degree, which qualifies them for entry-level positions in a wide range of creative and/or business professions.

The School of Art and Design offers eleven A.A.S. and thirteen B.F.A. degree programs, the Jay and Patty Baker School of Business and Technology offers four A.A.S. and eight B.S. degree programs, and the School of Liberal Arts offers one B.S. degree program.

The fifteen A.A.S. degree programs, all of which provide the foundation for one or more corresponding baccalaureate-level programs, are accessories design*; advertising and marketing communications*; communication design*; fashion design*; fashion merchandising management*; fine arts (with a career-exploration component); illustration; interior design; jewelry design*; menswear; photography; production management: fashion and related industries; textile development and marketing*; textile/surface design*; and visual presentation and exhibition design. Programs with an * are also available in a one-year format for students with acceptable transferable credits.

The thirteen B.F.A. degree programs are accessories design and fabrication; advertising design; computer animation and interactive media; fabric styling; fashion design (with specializations in childrens wear, fashion design, intimate apparel, and knitwear); fine arts; graphic design; illustration; interior design; packaging design; photography and the digital image; textile/surface design; and toy design.

The nine B.S. degree programs are advertising and marketing communications; cosmetics and fragrance marketing; direct and interactive marketing; fashion merchandising management; home products development; international trade and marketing for the fashion industries; production management: fashion and related industries; textile development and marketing; and visual art management.

For those students looking to balance the demands of career or family with their education, FIT offers nine degree programs available through evening/weekend study that include advertising and marketing communications (A.A.S. and B.S.), communication design (A.A.S.), fashion design (A.A.S.), fashion merchandising management (A.A.S. and B.S.), graphic design (B.F.A.), illustration (B.F.A.), and international trade and marketing for the fashion industries (B.S.).

Academic Programs

Each undergraduate program builds upon a core of traditional liberal arts courses, providing students with a global perspective, critical-thinking skills, and the ability to communicate effectively.

All degree programs are designed to prepare students for creative and business careersthe colleges Career Services, which offers lifetime placement, reports a graduate employment rate of 90 percentand to provide them with the necessary prerequisite studies so that they may go on to graduate degree programs. Internships are a required element of most programs and are available to all students. More than one third of FIT student internships result in employment offers by the sponsoring organization.

The Presidential Scholars Program, available to academically exceptional students in all disciplines, offers special liberal arts courses, projects, colloquiums, extracurricular activities, and off-campus visits designed to broaden horizons and stimulate discourse. Past areas of study have included cultural studies, Greek mythology, theories of public space, and urban archeology. Presidential Scholars are also awarded priority course registration and an annual merit stipend.

Precollege programs (Saturday/Summer Live) are available to high school students during the fall, spring, and summer. More than forty-five courses provide the chance to learn in an innovative environment, to develop art and design portfolios, to explore the business and technological sides of a wide range of creative careers, and to discover natural talents and abilities. Courses designed for middle school students are available in the summer.

The School of Continuing Education and Professional Studies provides convenient evening and weekend credit and noncredit classes to students and working professionals alike who are interested in pursuing a degree or certificate or furthering their knowledge and expertise in a particular industry.

Off-Campus Programs

The study-abroad experience offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in diverse cultures and prepares them to live and work in a global community. Through its international program offerings, FIT provides students, chosen on a competitive basis, the option of studying abroad for a year, a semester, or in the summer or winter sessions in countries such as Australia, China, England, France, Israel, Italy, and Mexico.

Academic Facilities

FIT provides its students with an urban campus of classrooms, laboratories, and studios that reflects the most advanced educational and professional practices. The Fred P. Pomerantz Art and Design Center houses photography studios; drawing, painting, and sculpture studios; a printmaking room; display and exhibit design rooms; a model-making workshop; and a graphics printing service bureau. The Peter G. Scotese Computer-Aided Design and Communications Facility provides students with the opportunity to explore the latest advancements in technology and their integration in the design of textiles, toys, interiors, fashion, and advertising, as well as photography and computer graphics and animation. The Annette Green/Fragrance Foundation Studio, a professionally equipped fragrance development laboratory, is the only one of its kind on a college campus. Cutting and sewing laboratories for the production management: fashion and related industries program students offer the most advanced design and cutting machinery among educational facilities in the U.S. The Design/Research Lighting Laboratory, an educational and professional development facility for interior design and other disciplines, features more than 400 commercially available lighting fixtures. Other college facilities include a broadcasting studio, knitting and weaving labs, a multimedia foreign language laboratory, and twenty-three computer labs containing nearly 700 Mac and PC workstations, in addition to several additional labs with computers reserved for students in specific programs.

The renowned Museum at FIT is New York Citys only museum dedicated to the art of fashion, and it is used by students, designers, and historians alike for research and inspiration. The museum operates year-round, and its exhibitions are free and open to the public. Recent exhibitions of note include Shes Like a Rainbow: Colors in Fashion; Exoticism; and Madame Grs: Sphinx of Fashion. The Gladys Marcus Library provides more than 300,000 volumes of print, nonprint, and electronic materials. The newspaper and periodical collection includes 500 current subscriptions, with a specialization in international design and trade publications; online resources include more than 90 searchable databases. The library also offers specialized resources, such as clipping files, fashion and trend forecasting services, sketch collections, and runway show DVDs.

Also on campus are three multimedia venuesthe Katie Murphy Amphitheatre, the Morris W. and Fannie B. Haft Auditorium, and the John E. Reeves Great Hallused for student presentations, industry panels, conferences, and special events.

Costs

The 200708 associate-level tuition per semester for New York State residents was $1646; for nonresidents, it was $4938. Baccalaureate-level tuition per semester was $2283.50 for residents and $5570 for nonresidents. For fall 2007, per-semester housing rates were $3051$3190 for traditional residence hall accommodations and $3981.50$7412.50 for apartment-style accommodations. Meal plans (mandatory for traditional residence hall residents) ranged from $1395 to $1795 per semester. A $325 annual fee for technology services and the Student Resident Association was required of all residence hall students. Textbook costs and other nominal fees, such as locker rental or laboratory use, vary per program of study. All costs are subject to change.

Financial Aid

FIT attempts to remove financial barriers to college entrance by providing scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study employment for students in financial need. Nearly all full-time, matriculated students who apply for financial aid receive some type of assistance. The college directly administers its own institutional grants and scholarships, which are provided by the Educational Foundation for the Fashion Industries.

College-administered federal funding includes Federal Pell Grants, Federal Perkins Loans, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, Federal Work-Study awards, and Federal Family Educational Loans, which include student and parent loans. New York State residents who meet state guidelines for eligibility may also receive Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) and/or Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) grants. Financial aid applicants must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), through which they apply for the Federal Pell Grant. They should also apply for all available outside sources of aid. Other documentation may be requested by the Financial Aid Office. Applications for financial aid should be completed prior to February 15 for fall admission or prior to November 1 for spring admission.

Faculty

FITs faculty is drawn equally from top professionals in academia, art, and business who bring their experience to the classroom and introduce students to the real-life opportunities and challenges of their disciplines through field trips, guest lectures, and sponsored competitions. Academic departments consult with industry advisory boards of noted experts in their fields, who ensure that the course work and classroom technology adapt to mirror evolving industry practices. Student-instructor interaction is encouraged, with a maximum class size of 25, and courses are structured to foster participation, independent thinking, and self-expression.

Student Government

The Student Council, the governing body of the Student Association, gives all students the privileges and responsibilities of citizens in a self-governing college community. Many faculty committees include student representatives, and the president of the student government sits on FITs Board of Trustees.

Admission Requirements

Applicants for admission must be either candidates for or recipients of a high school diploma or the General Educational Development (GED) certificate. Candidates are judged on class rank, grades in college-preparatory course work, and the student essay. Letters of recommendation are not required. A portfolio evaluation is required for art and design majors. Specific portfolio requirements are explained on FITs Web site.

Transfer students from regionally accredited colleges must submit official transcripts for credit evaluation. Students may qualify for the one-year A.A.S. option if they hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or if they have a minimum of 30 transferable credits from an accredited college, including 24 credits that are equivalent to FITs liberal arts requirements and at least one semester of physical education.

Students seeking admission to a B.F.A. or B.S. program must hold an A.A.S. degree from FIT or an equivalent degree from an accredited and approved college. They must also meet the appropriate prerequisites as required by the major and have completed FITs liberal arts requirements. Further requirements may include an individual interview with a departmental committee, review of academic standing, and a portfolio review (for applicants to B.F.A. programs). Any student who applies for transfer to FIT from a four-year program must have completed a minimum of 60 credits, including the requisite art or technical courses and the liberal arts requirements.
