The College

Founded in 1836, Emory & Henry College has enjoyed a solid reputation for inspiring students from all walks of life and guiding them toward personal success and lifelong achievement. Located on a pristine, historic campus in southwest Virginia, Emory & Henry enrolls approximately 1,000 students, who represent a diverse group and come from rural areas, urban centers, twenty-five states, and ten countries.

The College provides a wide array of academic programs, including prelaw, premedicine, visual and performing arts, international studies, business, education, environmental studies, and public policy and community servicejust to name a few. With a global perspective and an emphasis on service, excellence, and action, Emory & Henry encourages students to envision the world in which they would like to live and then challenges them to create it. The College is named for two men who symbolize this dual emphasis on thought and actionBishop John Emory, an eminent Methodist church leader at the time the College was founded, and Patrick Henry, a famous orator of the American Revolution and Virginias first governor.

Emory & Henry graduates have found tremendous personal success, which they have used to improve the world around them. Through its comprehensive, four-year liberal arts education, Emory & Henry has produced leading scientific researchers, NASA engineers, well-known writers, and successful physicians, ministers, lawyers, educators, and businesspeople. Emory & Henry provides innovative programs in public policy and community service as well as international studies and environmental science.

Students have opportunities for involvement in a variety of campus activities: service clubs, fraternities, sororities, sports clubs, honor groups, religious life, and multicultural groups. Student staffs produce a yearbook, an online magazine, and a literary magazine; others operate an educational FM radio station. Musically talented students have opportunities to participate in a choral program and a pep band. The prestigious Concert Choir has toured throughout the United States and in parts of Europe. The Barter Theatre, a professional theater in nearby Abingdon, works with Emory & Henry College to provide a theater education program that integrates college-level drama study with the benefits of experience on a professional stage. The Appalachian Center for Community Service is available for students committed to community service and integrates service learning into many classes. The King Health and Physical Education Center includes a state-of-the-art fitness center and enhances the College athletics program. Varsity sports for men are baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, soccer, and tennis; women compete in basketball, cross-country, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball. Several sports are also played on either a club or an intramural basis.

Location

Emory & Henry is located in Emory, Virginia, which is approximately 25miles north of Bristol, a city that offers large shopping areas, movies, and restaurants. The area surrounding Emory is known for its scenic beauty, recreational opportunities, and talented artisans. Within an hours drive are slopes for snow skiing, lakes for waterskiing, the Appalachian Trail for hiking, and locations for horseback riding, canoeing, and many other sports. The historic town of Abingdon, Virginia, which lies just 7miles south of Emory, is the home of the renowned Barter Theatre, the oldest professional theater in the United States. Abingdons downtown district includes shopping areas, movie theaters, restaurants, and museums. The town also hosts the annual Virginia Highlands Festival, bringing together musicians, artists, and craftsmen for exhibitions and competition.

Majors and Degrees

Emory & Henry College offers programs of study in art, athletic training, biology, business administration, chemistry, computer information management, economics, education (early childhood through high school, including many subject-area options), English, environmental studies, geography, history, international studies (East Asia, European community, or Middle Eastern and Islamic studies), languages, mass communications, mathematics, music, philosophy, physical education, physics, political science, psychology, public policy and community service, religion, sociology, and theater. Preprofessional preparation in dentistry, law, medicine, and veterinary medicine may be completed within several of the programs.

The Bachelor of Arts degree is awarded in all programs of study and the Bachelor of Science degree in selected areas. Individualized programs of study may be developed in consultation with a faculty adviser.

Academic Programs

Emory & Henry offers a liberal arts program with an emphasis on writing, reasoning, value inquiry, and knowledge of global concerns, as well as a broad introduction to liberal arts subjects. All students complete a core curriculum, which includes a yearlong, interdisciplinary Western Tradition course and a writing course for all first-year students. Sophomores complete an ambitious Great Books program, and upperclass students take courses related to value inquiry and global studies. Along with the core curriculum, each student completes a major and a minor or a combined program referred to as an area of concentration. Students also have the opportunity to choose elective courses and to participate in international exchange programs.

Undergraduate programs of study include art, athletic training, biology, business administration, chemistry, computer information management, economics, education, English, geography, history, languages, mass communications, mathematics, music, philosophy, physical education, physics, political science, psychology, religion, sociology, and theater. Special and interdisciplinary programs of study offered are environmental studies, international studies, pre-engineering, prelaw, premedicine, and public policy and community service.

Emory & Henry operates on a semester calendar from late August to mid-December and from mid-January to mid-May. Two summer sessions run from late May to early July. First-year students typically carry a four-course load of 13to 14 credit hours per semester, including the yearlong course on Western Tradition. Upperclass students carrying a full load complete five courses (14 to 15 credit hours) each semester. Classes meet on Monday-Wednesday-Friday or Tuesday-Thursday schedules.

One important feature of the Emory & Henry curriculum is the Colleges orientation in helping students achieve a smooth transition from high school to college. The Powell Resource Center provides academic support, advising, career services, and personal counseling. The Writing Center helps students in every department to use writing for effective communication.

Off-Campus Programs

Many faculty members encourage students to get involved in community projects or research that benefit the region. Internship opportunities are available for students in most of the Colleges programs, providing academic credit for off-campus work in community agencies and businesses. Many students have completed internships in the surrounding communities, while others have opted for internships outside the region, including several in Washington, D.C., in positions related to the Congress or the federal government.

Emory & Henry students participate in a wide variety of study-abroad programs. From Rome to Beijing and from Eastern Europe to East Asia, Emory & Henry students experience cultures and people in a way that enriches their perspective on their studies, their lives, and their futures. Emory & Henry helps students prepare for these experiences through language study and with courses offered through a comprehensive international studies program and an international studies and business program. The College has exchange agreements with colleges and universities in Asia, Europe, and Central and South America. Students who desire other types of travel/study are assisted by faculty and staff members in locating suitable programs.

Academic Facilities

McGlothlin-Street Hall is a 70,000-square-foot academic center that houses the Departments of Biology, Business, Chemistry, Education, Environmental Studies, Geography, International Studies, and Psychology, along with a 104-seat auditorium and a tiered sixty-seat auditorium. Classrooms and laboratories in McGlothlin-Street Hall are equipped with the most current technological equipment. Miller Hall contains computerized classrooms used for instruction in such fields as accounting and computer science. Science departments located in Miller and McGlothlin-Street Halls feature a variety of equipment, such as a microcomputer-based laboratory for physics students, computerized chromatography for chemistry students, a DNA sequencer in the biology department, and biofeedback equipment. Art students have access to studios, an exhibition area, and printing equipment, and music students make use of practice rooms and a recital hall.

The historic Byars Hall, which recently underwent massive renovations, is home to the Colleges Division of Visual and Performing Arts. The building includes choir and ensemble rehearsal halls, a digital art lab, two large art studios, practice rooms for instrumental music, a large piano lab, and a theater support room. In addition to planned updates to the Colleges main administrative building (Wiley Hall), Emory & Henry is also involved with two major fund-raising projects that will increase and enhance student involvement within fine arts and athletics.

Costs

For 200809, resident students pay a comprehensive fee of $31,840, which includes tuition, room, and board.

Financial Aid

Forms of aid include need-based and non-need-based scholarships, loans, and part-time jobs. A Bonner Scholars program provides substantial scholarships for selected students who do volunteer work in the surrounding region. Virginia residents are eligible for a special residency grant. Merit-based scholarships are awarded based on academic performance, and many can be renewed based on continued academic success. The average first-year student received an aid package (grants and scholarships) worth $17,746 in 200708. The priority application deadline for financial aid is April1.

Faculty

Emory & Henry professors are among the best in the nation. Over the last seventeen years, Emory & Henry has received the Carnegie Foundation Virginia Professor of the Year Award six timesmore than any other college or university in Virginia. Emory & Henry has 75 full-time faculty members, and the current faculty-student ratio is 1:11. The majority of the faculty members hold terminal degrees. Every student is provided with a faculty adviser, who assists in the selection of courses. While the faculty members are encouraged to continue study and research, their primary function is teaching. Many professors live near the campus, and they make their homes open to students for special events, informal class meetings, or other activities.

Student Government

Students at Emory & Henry are encouraged to take part in campus decision making. They have voting representatives on nearly every faculty committee and on the Board of Trustees. The central body in campus government is the Student Senate, which brings together representatives of the student body, faculty, and administration.

Admission Requirements

Admission to Emory & Henry is determined on the basis of both academic achievement and personal qualifications. An applicants secondary school preparation must include the following: 4years of English, 3years of mathematics (algebraI, algebraII, and geometry), 2years of laboratory sciences, 2years of a single foreign language, and 2years of social studies. Strong emphasis is also placed on involvement and leadership in extracurricular and community activities, in addition to consistency and improvement surrounding academic progress.
