The College
A comprehensive liberal arts and sciences education is the hallmark of Davis & Elkins College. Educational programs range from the highly professional, in nursing and teaching, to the innovative, in hospitality management and tourism management, to the traditional, in the liberal arts and sciences.
There are two fraternities and sororities active on campus and a wide variety of extracurricular organizations, including the concert choir, jazz choir, radio station, theater, newspaper, yearbook, and literary magazine.
An extensive schedule of intramural and club athletics is offered for men and women in addition to a sound program of varsity sports. Intercollegiate athletics for women include basketball, cross-country, soccer, softball, and volleyball. Teams for men include baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, and soccer. The College holds membership in the NCAA DivisionII and WVIAC and provides the opportunity to be part of a USCS coed ski team.
Location
The College is located in Elkins, West Virginia, rated among the top thirty small towns in America. Elkins is situated at the entrance to the Monongahela National Forest in the center of one of the nations most prosperous and fastest-growing outdoor recreation areas. Three nearby resorts provide a variety of recreational opportunities, including camping, golfing, hiking, fishing, tennis, and cross-country and downhill skiing.
Majors and Degrees
Davis & Elkins College offers programs of study leading to bachelors degrees in accounting, art, art education, biology, chemistry, communication, computer science, criminology, elementary education, English, environmental science, exercise science, health education, history, hospitality and tourism management, management, management information systems, marketing, mathematics, music, nursing, physical education, political science, psychology and human services, recreation management and tourism, religion and philosophy, religious education, secondary education, sociology, Spanish, sports management, theater arts, and theater education.
Preprofessional programs prepare students for admission to schools of medicine, veterinary science, dentistry, church ministry, pharmacy, and law. An additional area of study is available in forestry (3-2 bachelors-masters programs offered by special arrangement with the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse).
Associate degrees are available in accounting, business, computer business systems, criminal justice, hospitality, and nursing.
Academic Programs
Davis & Elkins College emphasizes a strong liberal arts and sciences foundation for all students. The Contract Degree Program provides opportunities to design individual programs of study under close faculty supervision. An honors program challenges the more advanced students. The William James Career, Academic and Personal Services (CAPS) Center provides academic, personal, and career support for all students. Included in the CAPS Center is the Supported Learning Program for students with documented learning disabilities.
Off-Campus Programs
Off-campus and independent experiences include cultural studies of the Caribbean, England, Italy, Scotland, and Spain; marine biology courses in Florida; and internships and practicums at several sites throughout Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington,D.C.
Academic Facilities
An arts center/auditorium complex has a 1,300-seat auditorium for concerts, plays, and other cultural events. The complex also houses the music, art, and theater departments, a swimming pool, and the fitness center. A science center accommodates the business and natural science divisions. The center also contains a planetarium, rooftop greenhouse, computer center, and several microcomputer laboratories. The Booth Library opened in 1992 with a capacity of 300,000 volumes. The library includes a fully equipped media center with computer capabilities and an online computer catalog. One-day calls for materials can be made to three other Mountain State Association of Colleges libraries. Students may also use the resources of the West Virginia University library in Morgantown, West Virginia.
Costs
The comprehensive tuition and fees charge for 200708 was $18,746, and room and board costs were $6350. The tuition and fees cover the full cost of student publications, health service, laboratory classes, the Student Union, and athletic contests.
Financial Aid
Scholarships, grants, loans, and campus employment are offered to help students meet financial obligations; a student may be given one award or a combination of several awards. Most financial aid is based on need, but academic, honors, athletic, and performance scholarships are also available; 93percent of the student body receives some form of financial assistance. Students applying for financial assistance should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid before March1. Forms may be obtained from the Office of Financial Planning.
Faculty
The College has 45 full-time faculty members, of whom 82percent hold terminal degrees. They include distinguished Fulbright scholars, authors, and lecturers. A student-faculty ratio of 12:1 provides students with ongoing opportunities to interact with instructors on a personal level.
Student Government
Davis & Elkins recognizes through its special governance system the value of student involvement in developing the academic and social policies of the College. Students work alongside members of the faculty and administration in planning and deciding policies in all basic areas of decision making (with the exception of finances) that affect students. Students participating in this process are elected to the Student Assembly by utheir classmates.
Admission Requirements
Davis & Elkins College seeks to enroll students with academic and personal qualities that indicate potential for intellectual, social, and spiritual growth. A basic premise of the admissions policy is that all applicants are reviewed individually to determine if they are capable of successfully meeting their responsibilities as a Davis & Elkins student and benefiting from the personalized educational experience the College provides. The Enrollment Management Committee establishes guidelines for admission that reflect the Colleges desire to identify academically capable students who demonstrate potential for further achievement; who are active at school and in the community, with a record of service; and who represent diverse cultures and backgrounds. Freshman applicants are required to submit scores from either the ACT or SAT and an official high school transcript that demonstrates a solid preparation for college-level work. Transfer applicants are also required to submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Exceptions may be made to high school unit requirements, with the provision that the student complete specific college-level course work. High school students must achieve a minimum GPA of 2.3 (ninth through twelfth grade) to be admitted to Davis & Elkins College. Students who submit a transcript with a cumulative GPA between 2.0 and 2.3 are considered for conditional admission to the College. High school and transfer students with a cumulative GPA below 2.0 are not admitted except under unusual circumstances and then are only admitted under an academic contract.
