The College

Daemen College is a private, career-oriented liberal arts college serving approximately 2,500 students in Amherst, New York.

The mission of Daemen College is to prepare students for life and leadership in an increasingly complex world. Founded on the principle that education should elevate human dignity and foster civic responsibility and compassion, the College seeks to integrate the intellectual qualities acquired through study of the liberal arts with the education necessary for professional accomplishment. This integration, which recognizes equal value in liberal studies and professional programs, aims at preparing graduates who are dedicated to the health and well-being of both their local and global communities.

With a Daemen education, students acquire the skills to solve problems creatively and think critically. They are comfortable with diversity and recognize the importance of a global perspective. They are able to work with others and be invigorated by environments that present challenges and demand innovation. Daemen students are expected to be active participants in their own education and informed citizens who understand that learning is a lifelong journey.

At the heart of Daemens integrated learning experience is the relationship that can develop between the Colleges faculty members and its students. Daemen prides itself on maintaining a student-centered atmosphere and a close professional and collaborative association among all members of the College community. Assisted by a supportive faculty, Daemen students are encouraged to pursue goals beyond their initial expectations, to respond to academic challenges, and to develop habits of mind that enrich their lives and their community.

Freshmen spend a year at Canavan Hall, to make friends and learn about life. By sophomore year, students move to Daemens garden-style apartments, featuring private bedrooms with free Internet access and phone lines. These 4-person suites include eat-in kitchens and living rooms. With over fifty student organizations, themed dinners, movie nights, and other activities available, students can find many choices on campus.

Location

Daemen is located on a 39-acre campus in Amherst, New York. The campus is easily accessible by the major rail, plane, and motor routes that serve the city of Buffalo, just minutes away. Buffalo has theater, music, art, restaurants, major league sports, and a first-rate zoo. Scenic Niagara Falls is nearby.

Majors and Degrees

Daemens Division of Arts and Sciences is designed to provide broad exposure to multiple disciplines that aid students in developing the intellectual and civic competencies that prepare them for life in an increasingly complex society. The career possibilities are nearly endless, as many graduates have gone on to successful leadership in corporations, human service agencies, government, the arts, educational organizations, religious institutions, environmental organizations, medicine, law, veterinary medicine, and research-related fields. Preparation for advanced health-related careers is a strength of the natural science department at Daemen College. The faculty is committed to each students success, and the College has considerable expertise in teaching the basic sciences that are prerequisites for medical studies.

Daemens Division of Health and Human Services is designed to provide students with the unique opportunity to work with and learn from both scholars and practitionersan experience that is critical to understanding the relationship between academic course work and practical application. Experienced and dedicated faculty members provide students with a balanced education through innovative and contemporary courses, exceptional professional internships, field placements, clinical experiences, and pioneering research opportunities. Daemen is dedicated to providing a broad-based education to prepare individuals for the demands of professional and scholarly roles in the health and human services fields. Daemens liberal arts core and professional curricula ensure that its students integrate liberal studies with their professional education to prepare them for life and leadership.

Academic Programs

Daemens competency-based core curriculum (sometimes referred to as general education requirements) places the College among the national leaders in innovation and creativity. The core is composed of 45hours or fifteen courses that help students master the seven core competencies. The core relies on several innovative features, including linked course work taught within the framework of learning communities, a progressive composition program, interdisciplinary courses that break down barriers among majors, and opportunities for extended research and public presentation.

The Honors Program provides an enriched curriculum for students that examines complex issues from multiple perspectives, uses primary sources rather than textbooks, and presents special opportunities for research. Honors Program students enjoy special residential accommodations and opportunities for domestic and international travel, as well as unique offerings such as field trips and access to campus speakers and presenters. Students also have a chance to publish their works.

Off-Campus Programs

Alongside the outstanding and innovative courses that provide the academic foundation at Daemen, there are many other opportunities to enhance a students education.

Cross-registration arrangements with other colleges and universities enable students to take courses for credit at twenty nearby colleges.

Daemen offers opportunities for students of every major to study abroad after completing their first year of college. The Center for Cross-Cultural Studies in Seville, Spain, and Havana, Cuba, provide a full range of opportunities to study language, art, history, political science, business, and literature in these culturally rich areas of the world. Daemen students from all departments are eligible to travel with the Students Without Borders program to work alongside physician assistant majors who offer their services in a health clinic in the Dominican Republic.

In the Consortium for North American Sustainability (CNAS), students spend one or two semesters earning college credits at one of Daemens partner institutions. They develop a broad understanding of what civic society and sustainable communities mean to people throughout North America. The program emphasizes special research opportunities for both students and faculty members. Partner institutions include the University of Northern British Columbia; St.Francis Xavier University, Nova Scotia; Universidad LaSalle, Mexico; and Universidad de Guanajuato, Mexico.

Service learning is part of Daemens core curriculum. In order to graduate, all students are required to take part in course work that links learning to service, with hundreds of organizations, agencies, and groups to choose from. Students are assigned the task of working in a wide variety of locales including hospitals; urban public schools; nursing homes; underprivileged community centers/churches; homeless shelters; agencies for the physically, mentally, and emotionally challenged; and environmental organizations.

Academic Facilities

The Colleges modern library has more than 139,000 volumes, more than 950 periodical subscriptions, a wide selection of musical scores and records, and a complete collection of American Enterprise Institute monographs. A learning resources center augments the library. Art department facilities include ten large studios and one of the largest bronze-casting foundries of any college in the country. Students of French and Spanish find a well-equipped language laboratory in the main classroom building. The beautiful and modern Business Building houses all of the business classrooms, including breakout rooms, which are used for smaller discussion groups. There is also a computer lab, which has fifty Pentium (IBM compatible) computers.

Costs

For the 200708 academic year, tuition and fees were $18,750, and room and board were $8610.

Financial Aid

Daemen makes a conscious effort to award financial assistance based upon academic achievement and financial need. In the 200607 academic year, 85percent of full-time Daemen undergraduates received some kind of financial aid. Seventy-eight percent of full-time Daemen undergraduates received need-based (TAP, PELL, Federal Work-Study, etc.) financial aid. The average award made to full-time undergraduates was approximately $13,000. The average need-based award made to full-time undergraduates was approximately $6000. Daemen College participates in all federal and state financial aid programs and has private sources of scholarship monies to award to eligible students.

Faculty

Class size ranges from about 15 to 25 students, enabling faculty members to get to know the interests and goals of each student. There are 151 full- and part-time faculty members, 98percent of whom hold terminal degrees.

Student Government

Through the elected Student Governing Board, students are responsible for all nonacademic matters that affect their life at the College. Students serve on advisory committees to the president, the academic dean, and others within the College community.

Admission Requirements

The Ad#missions Committee places particular emphasis on a students overall academic achievement. The committee evaluates the high school grade point average and standardized test scores (SAT or ACT). Students admitted last year had an average GPA of 90 percent. Daemen College considers this as the single best predictor of academic success. The College also considers a students SAT or ACT test scoresthe average scores for Daemen freshmen were 1050 SAT (composite math and verbal scores) and 22 ACT.
