The College

Founded in 1881, Concordia CollegeNew York is a four-year, coeducational institution offering a Christ-centered, value-oriented liberal arts education for lives of service to church and community. Part of the Concordia University System, Concordia is affiliated with the Lutheran ChurchMissouri Synod.

Students come from twenty-seven states and thirty-four countries worldwide; 60 percent are women. As members of a close-knit community, Concordia students are mentored by a dedicated faculty and staff, most of whom live within a 10-minute walk of the campus. Students develop lifelong relationships as they prepare for fulfilling lives and careers. During their time at Concordia, students are encouraged to reach their full academic, spiritual, athletic, and artistic potential.

Two-thirds of the students live on campus, forming an active, close-knit community involved in all aspects of college lifestudent organizations, athletics, community outreach, and performance ensembles. From daily chapel to servant events, spiritual life activities invite students to put faith into practice.

Residence halls include Sieker, Romoser, Rippe, and Bohm. Other facilities include Feth Hall, the campuss main administration building and one of several classroom sites, the Commons (dining hall), the Music Building, and Ressmeyer, Koepchen, and Wardseveral historic houses adjacent to campus that serve as student housing. The College also owns a number of homes throughout the community, enabling faculty and staff members to live near campus.

The multipurpose room on the main level of Schoenfeld Campus Center is used for musical and dramatic performances and can be converted to a gymnasium for intramural sports. The lower level of Schoenfeld includes the Brickyard Grille and Snack Bar, the Coop Store, the Campus Bookstore, the television lounge, the game room, and the student mailroom.

The Meyer Athletic Center includes a full-size gymnasium, a weight room, a fitness and sports training center, squash courts, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, and baseball, soccer, and softball fields.

The Concordia Clippers are members of the NCAA Division II and compete in the East Coast Conference in mens baseball, basketball, cross-country, soccer, and tennis and womens basketball, cross-country, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball.

Concordia College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and registered by the New York State Education Department.

Location

Concordias 33-acre campus is set in the small, affluent village of Bronxville. Bronxville is only 1 square mile in size and is home to 7,000 inhabitants, including diplomats, corporate executives, lawyers, and a wide range of other professionals. From the Bronxville train station, it is just under 30 minutes to Grand Central Station in the heart of New York City.

Majors and Degrees

Concordia offers Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees. The B.A. is offered in biology (with tracks in health, environmental, and research), education (NCATE-accredited, with tracks in early childhood, childhood, and middle childhood generalist), English (with tracks in literature and writing), liberal studies (with tracks in art, biblical languages, English, history, math, music, new media, psychology, religion, and sociology), and social sciences (with tracks in history, international studies, psychology, and sociology).

The B.S. is offered in business (with tracks in international management and Certified Financial Planning) and social work (with a track in family life ministry). The social work program is CSWE-accredited and allows for advanced standing in the Master of Social Work graduate degree program.

The College also offers a Fellows Program (honors); Lutheran Teaching Diploma; the Concordia Connection, a support program for students with a diagnosed learning disability; and an English as a second language program. The College also offers preprofessional studies programs (deaconess, law, medicine, and seminary).

Academic Programs

At Concordia, students are immersed in a learning environment that sparks the imagination and provides the skills to build a future. The curriculum emphasizes an interdisciplinary, hands-on approach to academics grounded by a strong foundation of the liberal arts. What students learn in the classroom is connected to the real world through exciting experiential learning opportunities.

To graduate, students must complete the Concordia Distinctive (the Colleges highly regarded core curriculum), the program of study, and general studies requirements, integrated with field experience and internships in Westchester County and the New York area. All these components together are known as The Concordia Experience.

Concordia operates on a two-semester calendar. A minimum of 122 completed semester hours is required to earn the bachelors degree.

The Concordia Fellows Program (honors) is open via application to all students who demonstrate high academic achievement. Fellows are enriched through a variety of unique academic experiences, seminars, and travel.

Concordia offers an intensive English as a second language (ESL) program, serving students at a variety of proficiency levels. The ESL program is housed on campus and serves both matriculated and nonmatriculated students.

The Concordia Connection Program is for students with diagnosed learning differences. Support services are provided to qualified students who meet regular admission requirements but need specific assistance in order to maximize their academic success. Space in this program is quite limited and additional fees are assessed.

Concordia also offers an Adult Education Program with Accelerated Degree Programs for adult students over age 25. Degrees are offered in behavioral sciences (B.A.), business administration (B.S.), and liberal studies (A.A.).

Off-Campus Programs

Study abroad and international travel experiences are available. Students may study abroad for a semester (through AHA International) or join a Concordia faculty-led tour during the month of May.

Concordia is part of the national Concordia University System, which is made up of ten colleges and universities affiliated with the Lutheran ChurchMissouri Synod. Students may enroll for up to one year at any of these sister institutions.

Academic Facilities

Concordias quintessential college campus is designed around the work of the Colleges first campus architect, Edward L. Tiltonan award-winning architect of Ellis Island. Inside these historical buildings, students have access to some of the finest technology and performing arts resources around. A perfect blend of old and new, Concordias facilities reflect its history and its future. Students and faculty and staff members alike take pride in a safe, clean, and inviting campus. Simply put, Concordia Colleges facilities help nourish students minds, bodies, and spirits.

The Donald A. Krenz Academic Center on the top floor of the library contains technology-enhanced classrooms, including the eighty-two-seat Pietruski Auditorium, a forty-eight-seat classroom overlooking the quad, a twenty-station computer teaching room, and the Darlene Hedin Krenz New Media Center designed for electronic and digital media instruction. Fully handicapped accessible, the center is also home to the OSilas Art Gallery, the Yeager Collection of original autographs of American financial leaders, a spacious student lounge, and the campus Information Technology Services department.

Sommer Center for Worship and the Performing Arts includes a recital/lecture hall with tiered seating for 315 and the Colleges Chapel. Private rehearsal rooms for individual and ensemble, vocal, instrumental, and organ practice adjoin the recital hall. The recital hall has hosted recording sessions for artists such as Itzhak Perlman, Yehudi Menuhin, and Harry Connick Jr., as well as the Concordia Choir.

Scheele Memorial Library offers support and assistance in the academic pursuits of the Concordia College community. The library provides an online catalog to search its own resources as well as those of forty-two other colleges. In addition, the library subscribes to over 20 databases, which are available for both on- and off-campus use. The library also houses the Curriculum Materials Center for education students; the Information Commons, complete with computer Internet access; a computerized writing center; and group study rooms.

Brunn-Maier Science Hall contains a full range of science laboratories and general classrooms.

Stein Hall houses individual practice studios and an electric piano laboratory. Stein Hall is home to the Concordia Conservatorythe Colleges music conservatory serving both students and the surrounding community.

Costs

Tuition and fees for the 200809 academic year are $22,930. Room and board charges are $8745. Costs are the same for in-state, out-of-state, and transfer students.

Financial Aid

Awards, merit scholarships, Lutheran grants and scholarships, need-based financial aid, and more make Concordia a valuable and affordable investment. Ninety-three percent of the students receive some form of financial aid, totaling over $8.25 million. To be considered, students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Concordias FAFSA code is 002709.

Faculty

Concordia Colleges faculty members are dedicated and talented; over 75 percent hold the highest degrees in their respective fields of study. The 16:1 student-faculty ratio enables students and faculty members to interact on a very personal level. In classes and labs, students see professors up front, not teaching assistants.

Student Government

All full-time students are members of the Student Government Association (SGA) and elect its representatives each spring. The SGA organizes and supports a host of campus events and provides a voice for all student concerns.

Admission Requirements

Concordia CollegeNew York is proud to be a member of the Common Application. Applications are evaluated using a holistic selection process. Admission to the College is based upon a wide range of criteria designed to identify a student body with integrity, high academic standards, and serious educational and personal goals. Applicants are considered on the basis of academic record, class rank, test scores, essay, and recommendations. In order to be considered for first-year admission, students should submit the $50 application fee ($100 for international students), application for admission (available at http://www.commonapp.org ), official high school transcripts, SAT or ACT scores, school report form (part of the application), supplemental application (part of the application), a written personal statement, and an optional activity/volunteer resume. In addition, transfer students must submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended plus SAT or ACT scores (if they have earned fewer than 28 college credits).

Prospective students are encouraged to visit the campus and meet with a faculty member in their area of interest. Open house preview day events are regularly scheduled; Concordia is also happy to arrange individual visits. Campus visit scholarships of $500 are awarded upon enrollment after an official campus visit.
