The College

The College of Saint Rose is an independent, residential, coeducational institution where academics and career preparation are top priorities. The Colleges progressive liberal education core prepares students to dive into one of the Colleges fifty-eight undergraduate fields of study, most of which incorporate a field experience or internship component. The College offers small class sizes, with a student-faculty ratio of 15:1 and an experienced, mentoring faculty. Money magazine and U.S. News & World Report have ranked Saint Rose as one of the top colleges in the Northeast and the nation, based on such factors as affordability and high academic quality. With the capital of New York as its convenient location and a distinctly friendly atmosphere on campus, the College of Saint Rose is a place where students realize they will be challenged intellectually and have the ability to change the world.

Saint Rose was founded in 1920 by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet and is a distinguished college interwoven within a remarkable city. The campus is part of the fabric of the city and the students and faculty members the threads that make it whole. The College is located in an area that gives it a distinct educational advantage and a college dedicated to cultivating intellectual dynamic leaders appreciative of diversity and active citizenship. The College encompasses eighty buildings, including the new Thelma P. Lally School of Education, a state-of-the-art Science Center, a high-tech music studio, and the Hubbard Interfaith Sanctuary.

Saint Rose students make up a community of leaders. Most of the 3,000 undergraduates at Saint Rose come from twenty-two states and sixteen different countries. The College of Saint Rose actively seeks to enroll students of all backgrounds who can contribute to and benefit from the experience of shared learning and academic success.

Campus housing includes traditional and suite-style residence halls and town houses as well as more than thirty Victorian homes. Each house has its own history and character, with unique wraparound porches and stained-glass windows.

Students participate in organized social activities as well as ten associations related to academic majors. The College of Saint Rose is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II and the Northeast-10 Conference. Intercollegiate teams include mens baseball and golf; mens and womens basketball, cross-country, soccer, swimming, tennis, and track and field, and womens softball and volleyball.

Although students ultimately attend Saint Rose to receive a superior education, they also participate in organized social activities that enhance the Saint Rose experience. Saint Rose students belong to more than thirty groups that include academic-related clubs as well as special-interest clubs. They also play in ten to fifteen intramural programs and produce three publicationsthe award-winning Chronicle weekly student newspaper, the Sphere literary magazine, and Reflections, the Colleges yearbook.

Location

Saint Rose is located in the historic Pine Hills neighborhood of Albany. With more than 60,000 college students in the area, there are always things to do and people to meet. A wide variety of restaurants, shops, museums, malls, and theaters are within walking distance or are easily accessible by buses that stop at Saint Rose.

Academic Programs

In addition to several Express Master programs that allow students to complete both bachelors and masters degrees in four to five years, the College offers qualified students the opportunity to pursue an accelerated bachelors/masters degree program that can be completed in approximately five years of study. The College offers these options in accounting, business, communications disorders (speech therapy), computer information systems, computer science, English, and history. It also offers those who wish to enroll as early admission students the option to complete their senior year of high school and freshman year of college simultaneously.

Qualified students may also participate in other special programs: a 3+3 option with Albany Law School, a 3+1 medical technology option with Albany College of Pharmacy or Rochester, and a 3+2 engineering option with Union College, Clarkson University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, or Alfred University. Students in these programs complete selected bachelors degree programs at Saint Rose in three years and transfer to the cooperating institution to finish the professional program.

Students are provided with assistance in planning their programs of study by faculty advisers in their major areas and by the Office of Academic Advisement. They may elect double majors or minors or may design their own programs within the guidelines set by the interdepartmental studies major.

To earn a bachelors degree, a student must complete a minimum of 122 credits, including, for most majors, the liberal education curriculum requirement of 42 credits, two courses in physical education, and the major requirements as specified. A minimum of 60 credits must be earned on the Saint Rose campus or at one of the colleges in the Hudson-Mohawk Association of Colleges and Universities through cross-registration.

The Colleges participation in the Hudson-Mohawk Association of Colleges and Universities provides an opportunity for students to enroll in classes at twenty participating colleges and universities in the Capital Region on a space-available basis.

The College operates on a semester calendar, with a fall term extending from August to December and a spring term from January to May. Two summer session programs offer undergraduate and graduate evening courses.

Off-Campus Programs

Saint Rose students can study in one of more than thirty countries, which is made possible by the schools affiliations with the College Consortium for International Studies, Regents College in London, and the Center for Cross-Cultural Study. All study-abroad opportunities are offered at the same price as Saint Rose tuition (plus airfare and personal expenses), including the Saint Rose financial aid package. All credits count toward the students degree.

Academic Facilities

A recent partnership with IBM and a $7-million technology upgrade greatly enhanced the speed and performance of the Colleges network, providing the infrastructure for wireless networking, videoconferencing, streaming media, and Blackboard, the Web-based instruction tool. The campuswide network provides access to the Colleges Neil Hellman Library and all campus computer laboratories and residence hall rooms.

The Center for Art and Design houses the Saint Rose Art Gallery as well as extensive photography labs, graphic design computers, and one of the largest screen-printing facilities in the state of New York. The Colleges Music Center features the Saints and Sinners Sound Studio, a music library, a performance hall, and practice rooms. Science and mathematics majors have access to the latest equipment and research facilities in the Colleges 27,000-square-foot Science Center.

The newest facility at the College is the Thelma P. Lally School of Education. This new $15-million, 56,000-square-foot building features a multimedia education forum, classrooms, computer labs, offices, an education and curriculum library, a laboratory nursery school, and a multidisciplinary services clinic. The school provides a learning and teaching environment in which technology plays a critical role and where teachers, parents, and students exchange ideas on how to make the American education system second to none.

The most recent transformation project at the College is the construction of a $7.5-million Events and Athletics Center. With the creation of this facility, the College of Saint Rose plans to provide an on-campus venue worthy of welcoming best-selling authors, Nobel Prize winners, and world-famous performers. This space is also designed to serve as a unique collegiate basketball venue in the Capital Region, large enough to accommodate the Golden Knights loyal fan base. In addition, Saint Josephs Hall, one of Saint Roses original buildings, received a $5.5-million renovation, turning the building into a student service hub centralized around the Colleges Student Solution Center.

Costs

Tuition for 200708 was $19,960. Room and board costs averaged $8558 per year, depending on the meal plan chosen by the student. Estimated annual costs for books and personal expenses are $1000 and $1400, respectively.

Financial Aid

More than 95 percent of the students receive scholarships and financial assistance. The College of Saint Rose participates in the Federal Pell Grant, FSEOG, TAP, and Federal Work-Study programs and in the Federal Perkins Loan and Federal Stafford Loan Programs. The College provides ample aid in the form of grants, service awards, and scholarships for need or academic achievement. Candidates for financial assistance must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. ISIR and SAR forms should be on file in the Financial Aid Office by March1. Students interested in being considered for academic scholarships must apply to the College by February1.

Faculty

Saint Rose has a full-time faculty of 174 members, with a student-faculty ratio of 15:1. The average class size is 2025 students, with more than 55 percent of classes having less than 20 students.

Student Government

The Student Association (SA) consists of elected students who want to make life at the College as enjoyable, interesting, and meaningful as possible. It budgets student funds, appoints representatives to College policymaking committees, and assists individual students and clubs in planning and carrying out projects. It also provides an organ of self-government, promotes an exchange of ideas within the College community, fosters opportunities beyond those offered in the formal curriculum, and advances the welfare of the entire College community. SA also oversees the Colleges thirty clubs and organizations.

Admission Requirements

The College wishes to admit students who show evidence of strong academic motivation and the ability to benefit from a challenging liberal and professional education. Admission decisions are made after careful study of all the data available for each candidate. Interviews are strongly recommended but not required. Freshman applicants should submit a high school transcript, a letter of recommendation from a teacher or guidance counselor, and scores on the SAT or ACT.

Transfer applicants must submit high school and college transcripts, a letter of recommendation from a college instructor, and a written statement of the reasons for transfer.
