The College

The College for Creative Studies (CCS) is one of the nations leading art and design education institutions. A private, fully accredited, four-year college located in Detroit, CCS offers Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in eleven majors. The College provides a dynamic learning environment in which students explore issues of art and design and the culture in which they exist while preparing for careers in the professional world. CCS is credited with having one of the worlds most recognized programs in transportation design and for placing more graduates in automotive design careers than any other school.

The College is dedicated to providing an educational environment most conducive to the development of outstanding artists and designers. The teaching is directed not only toward developing technical excellence but also toward stimulating intellectual potential. Graduates are well prepared to join the professional world, have the overall ability to carry on their education as desired, are able to communicate effectively, and have a basic understanding of todays artistic, social, and intellectual world and its traditions. The current enrollment is more than 1,300 men and women.

Location

Situated within a 10-acre complex of award-winning facilities, the College for Creative Studies is appropriately located in Detroits Cultural Center. Twenty-eight major cultural and educational institutions are within easy walking distance. Students have full access to the Detroit Institute of Arts, one of the largest fine arts museums in the United States, and to the main branch of the Detroit Public Library, which possesses more than 2 million volumes. Other available facilities include the New Detroit Science Center, Detroit Childrens Museum, Detroit Historical Museum, and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

Majors and Degrees

The College for Creative Studies offers a four-year program leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Degrees can be earned in advertising design, animation and digital media, art education, crafts (concentrations: ceramics, fiber design, glass, and metalsmithing and jewelry design), fine arts (concentrations: painting, print media, and sculpture), graphic design, illustration, interior design, photography, product design, and transportation design. Minors in art history and art therapy are also available. Interdisciplinary studies in crafts and fine arts are permitted upon departmental recommendation.

Academic Programs

The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree requires the completion of 126 credit hours: 84 in studio areas and 42 in general studies courses. All students are required to take core foundation course work in basic drawing, basic design, and figure drawing during their freshman year. They also begin work in their major department during their freshman year, or they may begin as an undeclared student. Typical weekly schedules for full-time students comprise 18 studio hours and 6 academic hours.

CCS Continuing Education division offers a rich variety of high-quality art and design programs year-round to students of all ages and artistic backgrounds. High school sophomores, juniors, and seniors can earn college credit in CCS Summer Experience Pre-College Program. Also available are portfolio preparation courses and professional development programs for teachers.

Off-Campus Programs

Independent study, internships, and study-abroad programs are available. Mobility programs, offered in cooperation with thirty-one other colleges in the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD), allow students to take advantage of course offerings at other institutions while pursuing a degree at the College. In addition, seniors may study in a studio space in New York City to which CCS has access. Juniors and seniors also have the opportunity to spend a full year of study at an accredited institution abroad.

Academic Facilities

The Colleges instructional facilities total 597,039 square feet. The Kresge-Ford Building provides classrooms, studios, and workshops for painting, sculpture, printmaking, basic design, basic drawing and figure drawing, illustration, photography, and woodworking and metalworking. The Yamasaki Building houses administrative offices and classrooms, studios, and workshops for ceramics, fabric design, glass, metals, and jewelry. The Walter B. Ford II Building houses the advertising design, animation and digital media, graphic design, interior design, product design, and transportation design departments as well as computer labs and a 250-seat auditorium. Liberal arts courses are conducted in facilities located throughout the campus. The Manoogian Visual Resource Center houses the library and Center Galleries, which encompasses the Main Gallery, the U245 Student Gallery, and the Alumni and Faculty Hall.

Costs

For 200708, tuition and fees were $27,090 for the academic year. Average charges for housing were $4200. The estimated cost of materials and supplies is $2500 in most fields of study.

Financial Aid

The College participates in the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Work-Study, Federal Stafford Student Loan, Federal PLUS loan, Michigan Tuition Grant, Michigan Competitive Scholarship, Michigan Work Study, Michigan Merit Award, Michigan Educational Trust, and Michigan Educational Savings Plan programs. The College also awards scholarships, based on artistic ability and academic excellence, to currently enrolled and prospective students.

The College attempts to financially assist qualified students who apply, contingent upon the availability of funds.

Faculty

The College has 246 faculty members. All members of the studio art faculty are professionals in their individual fields who bring diverse backgrounds and experiences to the classroom.

Student Government

Students participate in the leadership of the school in several ways. The Student Coalition is composed of representatives from each department and takes an active role in areas affecting student life. The coalition works with the Student Programming Coordinator to organize dances and other events during the year. The coalition was active in the founding of U245, the student-run gallery, and continues to support its activities.

Admission Requirements

The Office of Admissions at the College for Creative Studies is dedicated to assisting students in evaluating educational alternatives and career possibilities in the visual arts.

Applicants must have maintained a GPA of at least 2.5 in high school or successfully passed a high school equivalency examination and must submit SAT or ACT scores and a portfolio of representative work. Applicants who have had previous college experience are required to submit an official transcript from each institution attended. Personal interviews are available.
