In-Depth Description
Christopher Newport University

The University

Christopher Newport University (CNU) was founded in 1960 and currently enrolls 4,800 students in more than seventy areas of study (including three 5-year masters degree programs). The University takes pride in its student-first, teaching-first community. Small classes taught by veteran faculty members, a beautiful and safe campus, and one of the nations finest sports programs make CNU a distinctive choice among Virginias public universities.

State-of-the-art residence halls and upperclass apartments accommodate 3,000 students on campus. CNU is home to the $16-million Freeman Sports and Convocation Center, the $64-million Ferguson Center for the Fine and Performing Arts (designed by I.M. Pei), and the new $35-million David Student Union. The dazzling Paul and Rosemary Trible Library opened in 2007 with more than 100,000 square feet for information technology and traditional library collections. The new library features a fourteen-story tower, lighted day and night, and a 1,600-square-foot coffee shop with adjacent study rooms.

Location

CNU is located in suburban Newport News, adjacent to Mariners Park, a pristine 600-acre nature preserve with miles of jogging trails around Lake Maury and along the James River. Bordering the southern perimeter of the University is the elegant James River Country Club.

Newport News is the hub of high-tech industry in southeastern Virginia and home to the Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory, the premier physics/particle research facility in the world. CNU students have access to internships there and in many local media, health-care, education, and social service firms and agencies.

CNU ranks as one of the safest midsize campuses in Virginia. Its picturesque 250-acre campus and superb residential facilities receive high praise from students and visitors alike. CNU is host to the annual Ella Fitzgerald Music Festival and to internationally known performers like Andrea Bocelli, David Copperfield, Whoopi Goldberg, and B.B. King, among others. Students may attend these performances for $5 and $25 in the magnificent 1,700-seat concert hall of the Ferguson Center.

CNU is 35 miles from the pounding surf and rolling dunes of Virginia Beach, 25 miles from historic Williamsburg, 75 miles from Richmond, and 150 miles from Washington, D.C. Students enjoy the moderate climate year-round and appreciate the easy driving distance to the beach and the regions many recreational opportunities.

Christopher Newport University actively supports study abroad for all its students and sponsors a variety of international study programs each year. CNU students have recently participated with faculty members in study-abroad programs in Belgium, China, England, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Morocco, and Spain. CNU operates its own study center in Prague and offers top freshmen the opportunity to study at Oxford University each summer. CNU provides up to $5000 for international study to students who participate in the Presidents Leadership Program. Students may also travel to Europe with the CNU Chamber Singers or worldwide with CNUs award-winning Model U.N. Club.

Academic Facilities

In 2008, CNU is scheduled to break ground on a multimillion-dollar center for the study of humanities. Ratcliffe Hall, now home to the departments of English and political science, offers an airy atrium entrance with quiet lounge space for study and discussion.

CNUs academic buildings contain a variety of small classrooms and auditoriums, computer laboratories, specialty laboratories, an instructional technology center, and a greenhouse/herbarium. The Ferguson Center for the Arts houses a 1,700-seat concert hall; an art museum; practice and performance rooms for theater, music, and dance; an experimental black-box theater; and the 450-seat Music and Theater Hall. The Presidents Leadership Program offers a minor in leadership studies and up to $5000 per year for academically superior students, regardless of need.

Faculty

Nearly 90 percent of CNU faculty members hold the highest degree in their professional field. Faculty members are chosen at CNU only if teaching is their top priority. They are advisers, mentors, and friends to the students. It is a common occurrence at CNU for students to publish a paper or research with their professors. Professors place great emphasis on undergraduate research and students preparation for graduate school.

Student Government

The University encourages students to participate in the formulation of rules, regulations, and policies directly affecting student life. Students may get involved with the Student Government Association (SGA) and University committees and councils. SGA awards support monies to many of the more than 100 active campus clubs and organizations each year. CNU is a community of honor, and all freshmen take an Honors Pledge during their Welcome Week orientation activities.

CNU welcomes applications from Virginia residents and out-ofn-state students whose education includes a strong college-preparatory curriculum and a record of success.
