The College
Cazenovia College, founded in 1824, is a small, private undergraduate college located in the lakeside community of Cazenovia, in central New York. The College was founded as a seminary. It later became a two-year womens college and finally became the four-year coeducational institution that it is today. One of the thirty oldest continuously operating independent colleges in the United States, the College offers innovative baccalaureate degree programs.
Cazenovia College is a residential institution drawing primarily traditional-age, full-time college students. The undergraduate student body is 70percent women and 30percent men. The majority of students live on campus. Freshmen are assigned housing based on an interest questionnaire; upperclass housing assignments are selected by lottery. Student dining facilities are open seven days a week and continuously provide students with meals or snacks.
The main campus is located in the heart of the village of Cazenovia. All residence halls are fully wired for fiber-optic communications, including full Internet and e-mail capability. Nearby, the Colleges athletic complex, home to its NCAA DivisionIII teams, features two gymnasiums, a swimming pool, outdoor playing fields, and tennis courts. A short drive from the main campus, the 250-acre Equine Education Center is home to the Colleges nationally known equestrian program and champion riding teams.
Cazenovia students enjoy the advantages of small-town life combined with nearby opportunities for urban cultural, athletic, and recreational activities. Social life focuses on activities sponsored by individual residence halls and campus clubs, as well as dances, professional and student performances, sports events, and intramurals. The Colleges health and counseling center offers a wide range of medical and counseling services.
Cazenovia College has always been committed to helping students prepare for real-life situations. Students combine career and liberal arts course work throughout their studies. Internships are a part of most academic programs. Students develop the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue a career or go on to further academic study. Location
Cazenovia College is situated in the picturesque lakeside village of Cazenovia, New York, a quiet village of 4,000 in central New York. Many structures in the village are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The village retains much of its nineteenth-century charm with unique specialty shops, fine inns, and restaurants that cater to a variety of tastes. Cazenovia Lake is enjoyed for its beauty and for the opportunities it provides for summer and winter sports. Students have the opportunity to attend many cultural events on campus. In the city of Syracuse, a half-hour drive from Cazenovia, cultural attractions include a symphony orchestra, an opera company, several widely acclaimed regional theaters, museums, fine restaurants, and recreational events, among other social and cultural offerings. The Cazenovia area offers a wonderful living and learning environment.
Majors and Degrees
Cazenovia College offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in communication studies, English, liberal studies, and social science, with specializations in history and government, theater arts, interdisciplinary social science, and literature and culture.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree is offered in interior design; studio art, with specializations in studio art and photography; fashion design; and visual communications, with courses in advertising design, graphic design, and Web design.
The Bachelor of Science degree is offered in business management; criminal justice; early childhood education and program administration; early childhood teacher education; inclusive elementary education; environmental studies; English; human services (specializations in alcohol and substance abuse, counseling and mental health, generalist studies, and social services for children and youth); psychology; social science (specialization in history and government); and liberal studies (in communications, interdisciplinary social science, literature and culture, and theater arts).
The Bachelor of Professional Studies degree is offered in management, with specializations in accounting, business management, equine business management, fashion merchandising, and sport management.
Academic Programs
Part of what distinguishes Cazenovia College is the diversity and flexibility of its degree programs. Cazenovia offers a wide range of programs in art, business, early childhood education, equine studies, and human services as well as in interdisciplinary liberal and professional studies. All students complete a common core grounded in liberal arts. The general education core includes required course work in literacy and effective communication. Students select a major field of study and conclude their work by demonstrating the ability to integrate and apply their knowledge in a culminating senior capstone experience.
All programs feature small classes and personal attention from faculty members. Interdisciplinary studies, the use of computer technology, and innovative instructional methods are hallmarks of College course work. Opportunities for internships and course work in Great Britain and Washington, D.C., are offered through Canterbury Christ Church University, the American Intercontinental University (London), and the Institute for Experiential Learning (Washington, D.C.). The College continues to develop additional opportunities for study abroad and internships across the United States. Students also have the opportunity to earn honors at graduation through the College honors program.
The Cazenovia College Center for Teaching and Learning staff provides workshops and individualized tutoring to help students improve their math, reading, writing, and study skills. The centers programs have been cited by the National Directory of Exemplary Programs, and it offers support services to all students. The center includes the Higher Education Opportunity Program, Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program, Office of Special Services, and Title IV: Student Support Services. An excellent job placement program is also available on campus.
To earn a bachelors degree, a student must complete 120 credits (except where otherwise specified) with a grade point average of at least 2.0 and must satisfy all additional program requirements. Sixty credits must be completed prior to the junior year. Arts and sciences credit requirements vary according to the degree sought. Advanced placement and credit by examination are offered to qualified students, and honors courses are available in selected areas. An independent study arrangement is possible for full-time students. The academic year is divided into two 15-week terms and one 6-week summer semester offering both academic course work and internships.
Off-Campus Programs
An increasing focus of the College is experiential education through internships offered in conjunction with classes and cocurricular service learning projects offered by the Office of Student Leadership. Students are able to integrate academic study and career development through these learning experiences. Each student learns the practical side of a career and develops the versatility to adapt to the competitive marketplace. Students gain valuable experience off campus in major corporations, banks, newspapers, hospitals, local businesses, government agencies, and radio and television.
Academic Facilities
The main campus consists of twenty-four buildings on 20acres in the heart of the village. Classrooms, residence halls, and administrative buildings surround a centrally located quad that is a popular gathering place for students to study, relax, or join in a tag football game. A modern art and design building featuring advanced computer technology opened in 2004.
The Witherill Library has holdings totaling more than 86,000 pieces, including bound volumes, extensive microfilm and video libraries, and subscriptions to hundreds of journals, newspapers, and index/abstract publications. Approximately 3,000 pieces are acquired annually. The library is a member of the national/international Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) Interlibrary Loan Network, which allows loans to and from libraries all over the United States and the world. In addition, the librarys Web page includes subscriptions to 11 online databases, which include more than 2,600 full-text journals, indexes, and abstracts to be called up at a moments notice. The librarys professional staff is available for assistance to groups or on an individual basis.
The Colleges computer resources rival the best-wired facilities in the nation. Two main campus computer classrooms and one open lab host seventy-six Pentium IIIbased Windows NT systems. Labs dedicated to art and design host more than fifty G3 and G4 Macintosh workstations and an up-to-date AutoCAD/3-D Studio Viz Lab. All facilities support laser printers and scanners and (where appropriate) wide-bed printers and other specialized peripherals.
The College has extensive art studios and regularly hosts major art exhibits. The Cazenovia College Theatre is a resource for both the College and the community. Students produce plays and other entertainment, and the theater is also used for film showings and large-group lectures. The Colleges 250-acre Equine Education Center, just a 5-minute drive from the campus, is one of the premier collegiate equestrian facilities in the nation.
Costs
For academic year 200708, tuition was $21,280 per year, room was $4900, and board was $4072. Books and supplies were about $1000, and personal and travel expenses averaged $1400.
Financial Aid
Financial aid resources exist at Cazenovia College to bridge the gap between the amount the students family can pay and the cost of attending the College. Ninety percent of students receive some form of financial assistance, either merit- or need-based. About 30 percent of the students are recipients of academic achievement scholarships designed to recognize and reward students for their scholastic achievements. These awards range from $12,000 to full tuition. Need-based federal, state, and institutional sources include grants, loans, and on-campus work-study arrangements.
Faculty
Cazenovia has 141 faculty positions. All full-time faculty members must possess a Ph.D. or other appropriate professional degree, and all faculty members must demonstrate proficiency in the discipline in which they teach. The faculty is more strongly committed to teaching than to research. In addition, many of the part-time faculty members pursue careers outside the College; their professional experiences enrich the Colleges programs. Faculty members also function as student advisers and academic counselors. The student-faculty ratio is 15:1.
Student Government
The Student Government Association (SGA) is elected and empowered to represent the student body in various aspects of their educational experience at the College. While all students are members of this association, voting membership consists of executive officers, class officers, representatives of the residential communities, commuter representatives, and the student chair of the Community Judicial Board. Responsibilities include allocation of funds to student clubs and organizations, representation of students in the campus governance structure, planning and sponsoring of campus events, and student contribution to the campus disciplinary process.
Admission Requirements
Cazenovia College seeks students whose high school and college records, standardized test scores, official recommendations, and qualities of mind and character promise success in college. Prospective students should send in a completed application, a transcript, teacher recommendation, test scores (where applicable), and a resume of extracurricular activities. A campus interview is strongly recommended. For freshman applicants, the SAT or ACT is not required but is recommended. Students may be admitted for deferred entrance or to advanced standing. Transfer applicants must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.0.
