The College

Canisius College offers the best in high-quality academic programs and facilities as well as outstanding faculty members who are leaders in their fields. With more than seventy distinct majors, minors, and special programs and an exciting urban location to support internships and out-of-class experiences, Canisius College prepares students for success. Canisius College offers a state-of-the-art campus with enhanced technology in academic and living facilities. Canisius housing is like a home away from home, not just a temporary living accommodation. Bosch and Frisch Residence Halls, which were recently renovated, and Dugan Hall, which opened in 2005, are the primary residences for first-year students at Canisius. Apartment-style living is available to sophomores, juniors, and seniors in one of the Delevan Townhouses or other town-house complexes and apartment buildings on campus. Specialty house options include George Martin Honors Hall, available to students in the All-College Honors Program, and the Intercultural Living Center, a learning community residence for international and U.S. students. All campus housing is equipped with high-speed Internet access and cable television.

Students have opportunities to develop leadership skills through involvement in student clubs and organizations, research, and service learning. There is something for everyone at Canisius. There are more than 100 college-sponsored student clubs and organizations and a wide range of athletic teams from which to choose. The students are not only leaders in the classroom but also on the NCAA Division I athletic field. Most of the sixteen Golden Griffin teams compete in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), in which a majority of the champions receive an entry into their respective NCAA tournaments. Since joining the MAAC in 1989, mens basketball, baseball, womens cross-country, mens soccer, and softball have claimed conference titles.

Location

Canisius Colleges urban setting is a significant advantage for students who are seeking internship, research, and service learning opportunities because of the proximity to a wide range of businesses and organizations.

Canisius is located on 58 acres in a residential neighborhood in north-central Buffalo. Buffalo is a great college town that has it all: professional sports teams, a world-renowned art gallery, historic architecture, and scenic parks and waterways all within minutes from campus.

The internationally known Albright-Knox Art Gallery holds one of the worlds finest collections of nineteenth- and twentieth-century American and European works of art. Buffalo is also home to the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Studio Arena Theatre, which provides a wide variety of theater experiences.

The Metro Rail rapid transit system connects the College with some of Buffalos most exciting venues, including HSBC Arena, home of the National Hockey Leagues Buffalo Sabres. The arena also hosts college basketball with Canisius Golden Griffins as well as major popular and rock music concerts. During the summer, students can catch Buffalo Bisons Triple-A baseball games at Dunn Tire Park. At Ralph Wilson Stadium, in Orchard Park, the Buffalo Bills are a focal point throughout the football season.

The Buffalo Zoo and Delaware Park, a 350-acre park with a lake and a golf course, are located less than a mile from the campus.

Majors and Degrees

The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest and most diverse of Canisius three academic divisions, with majors in the natural and social sciences, humanities, and preprofessional studies. It also houses the core curriculum, which strengthens fundamental critical thinking, oral, and written communication skills and helps enhance students understanding of other cultures. The College of Arts and Sciences offers programs leading to bachelors degrees in anthropology, art history, biochemistry, bioinformatics, biology, chemistry, clinical laboratory science, communication studies, computer science, criminal justice, digital media arts, economics, English, environmental science, European studies, history, international relations, mathematics and statistics, modern languages (French, German, and Spanish), music, philosophy, physics, political science, psychology, religious studies and theology, sociology, and urban studies.

The Richard J. Wehle School of Business offers a well-rounded business curriculum to complement the liberal arts courses in the major, which gives the student an understanding of the broad and interrelated nature of business issues. There are programs leading to the B.S. degree in accounting, accounting information systems, business economics, entrepreneurship, finance, information systems, international business, management, and marketing. All the business programs are accredited by the AACSB InternationalThe Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

The School of Education and Human Services offers degrees that lead to teacher certification at the early childhood, childhood, middle childhood, or adolescent level, such as adolescence education, athletic training/sports medicine, childhood education, early childhood education, physical education, and special education. All programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Canisius also offers diverse and flexible academic programs, such as fashion merchandising (in conjunction with the Fashion Institute of Technology), fine arts, and military science, and certification programs in gerontology and womens studies. Preprofessional programs are available in dentistry, engineering, environmental science, and forestry (in conjunction with the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse), law, medicine, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine. Canisius also has an early assurance of admission agreement for New York State residents, with the Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine of SUNY at Buffalo and SUNY Medical School at Syracuse. Seven-year joint-degree programs exist between Canisius and the SUNY Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, and the SUNY College of Optometry. Joint-degree programs offered with Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine include a seven-year program in osteopathic medicine and a five-year program in pharmacy. A five-year combined-degree program leads to the B.A. in a major in one of the liberal arts disciplines and a Master of Business Administration degree.

Academic Programs

To earn a bachelors degree from Canisius College, students must complete forty courses and a minimum of 120 credit hours. Within each curriculum, the courses are distributed into three areas: core curriculum, major field requirements, and free electives. The College requires that students complete a rounded program of humanistic studies embracing literature, the physical and social sciences, oral and written communication, philosophy, history, religious studies, and language.

The All-College Honors Program is available for qualified students. This program includes rigorous exploration of the arts and sciences in an enriched curriculum with close faculty supervision and small classes. Students may also obtain college credit through the Advanced Placement Program of the College Board. Students with scores of 4 or better on Advanced Placement tests are considered for credit and advanced standing.

Off-Campus Programs

Many Canisius students choose to spend a semester or a year studying abroad, improving their fluency in another language and opening the doors to exciting personal and professional opportunities. Canisius administers semester-abroad programs in London, England; Oviedo, Spain; Lille, France; Dortmund, Germany; Morelia, Mexico; and Galway, Ireland. Canisius also works with other U.S. colleges and universities to make it possible for students to spend a semester or a year studying in Italy, Australia, Japan, Canada, and other countries. Some Canisius-sponsored programs also enable students to work as volunteers or interns in countries overseas. The Office of International Student Programs assists students in selecting a study-abroad program, organizes a predeparture orientation, and assists students upon their return to the United States.

Students majoring in international relations and political science may participate in programs in Washington, D.C., or Albany, New York, which have been designed to give students practical experience in their fields.

Academic Facilities

Canisius has invested nearly $120 million over the last thirteen years to create state-of-the-art technology classrooms, residence halls, and cultural and recreational spaces. In addition, the campus provides wireless access in every building and residence hall. Instructional computing facilities include duel-platform computers located in general-purpose labs and teaching labs. The College offers fifty laptops students can check out for use within the library as well as e-mail and Internet stations at various convenient locations on campus.

Costs

For the academic year 200708, tuition was $25,370, room and board were $9770, and fees were $1007. Books and supplies were estimated to cost $700. An additional $1130 per year was recommended for travel and personal expenses.

Financial Aid

Of the class of 2011, 98 percent receive some form of financial aid, and the average award is $23,936. This aid includes Canisius College scholarships and grants, state grants, state and federal loans, federal grants, and Federal Work-Study Program awards. Applications for financial aid should be completed by February15. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the TAP application (New York State residents only) must be filed before consideration can be given to applicants.

Faculty

The Canisius College faculty consists of 217 full-time teachers, including Jesuits and lay men and women. More than 93 percent hold doctorates or other terminal degrees. The primary emphasis of the faculty members is teaching, and many also serve as academic advisers. The student-faculty ratio is 12:1.

Student Government

The Undergraduate Student Association comprises the entire undergraduate student body and is represented by elected officers who serve on the Student Senate. The senate assists and supervises student activities and advocates on behalf of the students, presenting their views to the College administration. In addition, students serve on many College committees.

Admission Requirements

Students applications for admission are evaluated on a combination of factors, including a students academic ability, strength of character, high school record, rank in class, an essay, aptitude tests (SAT or ACT), extracurricular activities, and recommendations. An applicant to the College is encouraged to pursue a challenging college-preparatory program in high school. This program of studies should include a minimum of 16 units of credit in the academic subjects of English, foreign language, mathematics, science, and social studies. Recommendations from teachers or guidance counselors are not required but are encouraged, and they are considered in reviewing applications for admission. Campus interviews are strongly recommended and in some cases may be required.

Transfer students are welcome and are admitted to Canisius in the fall and spring semesters. In addition to meeting the academic standards required of all entering students, transfer students are considered for admission if they have a minimum 2.0 cumulative quality point average when transferring from either a two-year or a four-year accredited institution.
