It Pays to Be a Student: Little Ways to Save

It Pays to Be a Student: Little Ways to Save

By Kathryn Knight

As a college student, saving money isn’t just a choice; it’s a way of life. While you may be aware that students receive discounts at movie theaters and museums, you may not know about other little ways to save.

From discounts on spring break trips to grocery savings at Target, Fastweb has found the best ways for you to overindulge without going over budget.

Clothing

Goodbye, Goodwill. Hello, J. Crew. Stay in style with these student savings:

J. Crew – Offers students a 15% discount.

Club Monaco – Take advantage of clothes at 20% off prices with a valid student ID.

Topshop – This 10% discount is available to high school students too.

Banana Republic – 15% discount with a student ID, even on clearance items.

When buying online, search for promotion codes from websites like retailmenot.com, couponcabin.com, and offers.com. Typically, promotion codes offer additional discounts or free shipping.

Entertainment

Just about every movie theater and museum in America provides a discount for students. Here are some other ways to stay entertained without draining your checking account:

Broadway shows – Most Broadway shows offer a student lottery opportunity. At a certain point in the day, typically around noon, students can enter themselves in a drawing for seats in the first few rows. Drawing winners will only have to pay around $20 per ticket. Call ticket box offices for lottery times and details.

Have you checked your scholarship matches recently? See them now.

Restaurant.com – This site enables you to buy $25 gift certificates to your favorite restaurant for $10. Perfect for date night.

Sporting events – Some professional sports teams host student nights for local universities. Check the venue’s website as well as the local newspaper for dates and times.

Groupon.com or Livingsocial.com – Take advantage of great deals like half-off skydiving or horseback riding in your college town.

I don't understand this article. It really doesn't support saving as much as it does spending. The places that they say gives you "discounts" are already expensive to where how much you save isn't worth it.

You're in college now, style doesn't matter really.

Going to the thrift store and making yourself a home meal isn't bad - and it might score some points with your date if you can learn to cook.

I understand all of the comments but this has really helped me. I work two part time jobs and my parents go without to help me when I need it. We never get to spend time as a family and have to save for months to be able to go out together. The entertainment tips helped me be able to save a little money for my family and the clothes section enabled me to help my sister buy school clothes so thank you fastweb.

Yeah.. I don't shop at those places or go to any sporting events or even concerts BECAUSE I need to afford to live separately while going to college. Obviously whoever wrote this is far removed from the reality of people who don't have their parents pay for college for them.

This article is not about saving. It should be retitled "Little Ways to Cut Costs." However, the content was so poorly researched and seems to understand so little about the expenses of a student, along with programs and deals universities offer directly to students, that it was probably written just so the author could earn some extra money, rather than with time spent actually developing a coherent framework. Even the comments following the article (with the exception of Lauren's - which was a fruitful suggestion) are all off-topic about scholarships and financial aid.

If your college or university is generally located one hundred (100) miles or more from your residence and you are a licensed driver on your parents (automobile) insurance policy, speak to the insurance carrier about modifying your premium payment during the months that you are away at school and not likely to be operating one of their insured vehicles. These savings, even if you may bring a car to campus later on, could add up over the course of four years.

    @ SolomonH12,

As a non-citizen and non-resident, you will not qualify for most scholarships and financial aid, certainly none from the Government. You may however qualify for any academic scholarship (either at the beginning of your admission e.g. based on SAT score, but mostly in the course of your studies based on GPA), and private loans for international students (with a citizen/resident co-signer).

Certainly, Fastweb will be the best place to find scholarships for which you may qualify; makes sure to complete your profile as an international student so you will get only relevant results.

The best way to get money for school is from the college itself. Apply to many schools and compare the financial aid packages you get. You can even have the application fee waived if you are in financial need. Call or email the schools and ask for an advisor to get you through the process.

AAA Now charges an admin fee on top of the 50. fee. Student travel sites have age restrictions.
