State-Based Tuition Breaks

By Roxana Hadad

September 04, 2008

You may already know about federal aid for college, but did you know your state could help out as well? Most states offer financial incentives to residents as well as awards based on academic merit and financial need.

In-state Assistance

States have a lot of reasons for offering grants to students who attend in-state colleges and universities. “We want to keep our great students in our state,” said Steve Tompkins, former director of communications for the Georgia Student Finance Commission.

States like Georgia have set up their tuition reduction programs to:

  • Encourage academic excellence
  • Keep the best and the brightest students in their state
  • Increase opportunities for students within the state

These state financial aid plans are proving to be great opportunities for students around the country.

Kinds of Awards

Each state has its own programs for its particular student population. Depending on the state, award amounts range from $500 “vouchers” to complete tuition waivers targeting students at the top of their classes. Some awards can be used only for tuition, while others include room and board, fees and even study abroad opportunities and book allowances. Many awards are renewable, but since they are seen as a supplement, you may lose eligibility for state funds if you receive other forms of financial aid.

Eligibility Requirements

State awards can be a great option because in some cases they don’t target only the top students. While some awards use grades and test scores as eligibility requirements, the main criteria is in-state residency – and some inter-state agreements even let you transfer the awards outside of your state’s borders. Different states have different residency requirements. Financial need is also a consideration for some awards. Also check to see whether there are restrictions on the schools you can attend. Most awards are for attending public schools, but some states offer vouchers for private schools as well.

The Application Process

Many states use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine eligibility and award amounts for state grants and scholarship programs. In those cases, you automatically apply for state aid when submit the FAFSA. Be sure to check the deadlines for your state because it may differ from your school’s deadline. Miss the deadline and you may lose eligibility for state funds the entire academic year.

To find out about your state’s specific program, check out FinAid’s page on U.S. State Government Aid. The page includes links for the commissions on higher education and departments of education in every U.S. state and territory. Be sure to take a look at both your state of residence and as well as the state where you plan to attend college.

So check out your homegrown in-state funding. You may find the aid you need to reach your educational goals.

My name is Anita. Like the post below from demetria392003, I am currently in the process of enrolling in Remington College Medical Billing and Coding Program. I will have a balance due of $9,144.05 after the Pell Grant kicks in. Like demetria392003, I have also put my dreams of receiving a college/trade school diploma/degree on hold to raise my children without spousal support and now they're grown even though I am currently raising 2 grandchildren (10yrs and 14 yrs old) . I am currently drawing unemployment ($1200 a month, which barely covers the daily living expenses) just to get by the best way I can, so any money recieved would help pay for essential needs(i.e.Auto expenses, personal items, school materials, etc.) would be greatly appreciated....Thank you for your time and ANY help would be appreciated. Anita my email address is anita_081258@yahoo.com

My name is Phyllis. I have recently enrolled in Remington College Medical Billing and Coding Program there is a balance of $9,025.00 when all other aid applied for has been awarded. I have put my dreams of receiving a college/trade school diploma/degree on hold to raise my children without spousal support and now they're grown. My health is not the best but I'm not letting that be an excuse for me not to complete what I've dreamed of doing and wanting a career in. I am currently not employed so any money recieved would help pay for essential needs(i.e. rent, utilities, personal items, school materials) would be greatly appreciated....Thank you for your time Phyllis my email address is demetria392003@yahoo.com

My name is James. I have worked in CA from 1981-2004, and do not intend to leave the state. I had gained General Manager status in a large corporation, but in 2004 I became disabled. I am recieving social security, but the cost of my health care and housing does not leave me with much. My goal is to be back to work in 1 to 2 years. I have applied for a BA in Business Organizational Management at Ashford U. I can not be on my feet much, so with a degree I could get a position in a corporate office where I would not need to be on my feet. The cost for 64 credits is 27,363. I need 150 credits for a BA degree. Whatever you could do would be great. Thank you for your time, James Tarbell. 916-871-8862 tarbell.james@yahoo.com

    Hello,
I am a mother of 4 sons. I have, for the last two months, attended Columbia College of Missouri through their distance education program. I just finished my first two classes with a 4.0 GPA. I do receive the Pell Grant, but it is only enough to pay for tuition. After the tuition, there is only $44.00 left. I do not have enough for books unless I pay for them out of my pocket. I am trying to further my education to help my family. My husband has been the sole provider for the last 10 years. I want to help him, help us. We have worked very hard to cut all expenses for the last 8 yrs. We have had no television svc, home phone. or any other expenses of this nature so that I can go back to school. Our grocery costs have been reduced to $100.00 a week to feed four people. I sent my 17 year old to live with his oldest brother in Mo. so he could start college as well. All I am asking for is enough to buy my books each semester. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to read this, and you can contact me at: mountainhaven1@msn.com

Being a University state employee for 8+ years, I am eligible to take 3 courses per fiscal year via tuition waiver. Having an Associate's degree in an applied science did not require general education courses. In order for me to be able to complete my Bachelor's Degree in a reasonable timely manner, I must take more courses and pay out of pocket for them as well. I make less than29K per year, divorced, displaced homemaker, no other financial support and respectfully ask for help in attaining my goal to be able to create a rewarding career, more financially sound future for myself.
