Ask Kantro: Why File a FAFSA If You Know That You Won't Qualify for Financial Aid?

Why should I fill in the FAFSA, opening up my financial life, when I know today that it will not get any aid for my children’s college educations? We are not independently wealthy with millions in salary and savings, but we intend to have the kids compete for merit based, essay or other subjective determinants for college awards and scholarships. — Anonymous

Do I need to file FAFSA for my daughter with my 2009 tax return because I understand the government won't release the 2010 tax form until Feb, 2011? Our income for 2010 is less and I want to use that instead of 2009. Should I wait, I wasnt sure of the deadline to file for FAFSA...

I have completed our application and submitted; however, I cannot file my tax return for 2010 until the gov't releases the forms in February (which I marked "I will file" on the application). Is this going to effect my results and should I just mark it as "filed" and use my 2009 tax information on the application? I have already received confirmation that they received the form and that I am to 'update' the application once my taxes are filed.

Just stating that if your child is to apply for the Pell Grant they need to fill out the FAFSA application no matter if they get approved or not.
