November 23, 2009

UC Berkeley students are up in arms over an approved 32 percent tuition increase for all ten campuses in the University of California system that will raise yearly fees above $10,000 for the first time in history.

Similar protests and sit-ins took place at UCLA and UC Santa Cruz.

The regent committee endorsed the hefty hike by a vote of 10-1. The record-breaking boost in undergraduate and graduate costs will go into effect next Fall.

Check out FastWeb’s video coverage of the protests below.

The students should instead focus on the lack of spending restraint going on in Sacramento. The reason college tuition is going up is because the state is facing pressure not to trim its employees and to provide gold-plated pension and health benefits to them (due to public service unions that use union dues to lobby politicians who are on the other side of the bargaining table when it comes time to negotiate new union contracts..... effectively stacking the deck in the unions favor), in addition to all the other pet projects that the state refuses to cut. Colleges and students are not as politically powerful as unions in this fight (faculty is non-union and students have no money so they cannot pay for a consituency in Sacramento), as so they will continue to see less support from the state as time goes on, with more fees coming out of their pockets. In other words, dont blame the administrators, as they were told by Sacramento what their budget was and had to do what they could to keep the lights on in the schools under the circumstances. Instead, place the blame at the politicians' feet for not properly looking out for the true interests of the state and spending like drunken sailors in their bald-faced efforts to maintain personal power.

I agree. Why do the students have to suffer? It's hard enough to make it through school with this economy, now there is an increase in tuition. The government would cut down the budget on education first and raise the fees on students to solve the problem? Why the students?

It's ridiculous what are administration is doing here too. Tuition prices are going up and up while they are making budget cuts to all of the faculty. But oh no, we 'need' to take care of the flowers.

I feel like college administrators are too far away from the students now. They don't seem to understand what we really need.

I think that it is about time someone ranted and raved about these cuts and fees! I'm just barely making the bills trying to pay for school and groceries. It is outrageous! Go students!
