Can you tell me why the decision was made to take ALL coursework, even that done over 20 years ago into consideration when determining a students' SAP status? As a specific example, my husband attended college for three terms back in 2001-2002, and due to withdraws and F's, and although since he has reentered college in January of 2011 has made nothing but A's for over 38 credit hours, he is now considered INELIGIBLE for financial aid. How is this fair? I realize so many people take advantage of the FA system, but where is the rationale behind making this policy retroactive like that? This is madness!

Our daughter is in college full time, she's a senior. Our son is taking a semester off while he decides on his ultimate path (he's trying to find a job). We had all of our financial aid ducks in a row as of May 30 - for 2011-2012. Then, it fell apart, because (1) my husband was out of work for 3 years (he went back to work in January)(2) we lived on credit cards (3) we took an IRA distribution to try to pay those off and were unsuccessful because we did not have enough in the IRA to do so (we are likely to have to do a 13) (BUT until January we had a stellar 1st class credit rating)(4) I can't co-sign anything because of this (neither can my husband, her grandparents have refused, her uncles - both of them - have refused etc) - so all she needs in $3,600.00 so she can eat so what do we do? I am tearing out my hair here with frustration - oh, and the IRA distribution we took precludes our daughter getting a work-study job on campus and she has no car to go off campus.

I am almost 20, have been living on my own since I was released from a Juvenile Corrections program at 17. Because I was a minor I was released to my parents but Ileft a few months later when I turned 18. The past two years I have been sleeping on the couches of various friends. No income tax filed in 2010. Would I file for independent status answering yes to the question "anytime since you were 13,, were you a orphaned, foster care, or a dependent or ward of the court". Does my "committment or court placement" into a juvenile justice program consitute being a dependent or ward of the court?

I have just come to understand that my school has a policy differing from that of the Department of Education. This was not detailed when I returned to school and now it seems if I am not only out the financial aid I received, but also the 70,000 dollars per year I would have earned selling cars. I have received a 3.5 the last two years while receiving this aid towards a Geology degree, but because my school will not allow for appealing financial aid if the student has taken more than 180 credits regardless of the circumstances I can not continue education until I can find a way to pay for it. I feel duped, taken advantage of and robbed. The Department of Education does allow for appeals for students over 180 credits and since I have only received financial aid for 70 of these credits, does the school not have a responsibility to make me aware of this policy before agreeing to contract to educate me. How can they get away with this without notification to the students that their policy is different from the Department of Education?

Hi, I am a sophmore in college. I recently transferred to a different school. I applied for FAFSA in the fall and started school this spring. I have taken the loan enterance counseling in 2005 when I started school. The new school that I am attending requires that the students take this counseling every semester. I did not know this and I kept going to the fin aid office and they told me they were just waiting for a correction to come back on my application. They said other than that everything was done. Now it is the 6th week into school and I went in today to figure out what was taking so long. This is when I found out about the enterance counseling (I thought you only had to take it once and then the exit counseling when you graduated) I have been going to the fin aid office about twice a week since school started making sure I had everything in order for the fin aid. This money is very important because I am taking 16 credits and I have to drive 2 hours a day just to go to the school. Then the fin aid lady told me that they don't allow students to take the full loan amounts and I have taken too much fin aid in the past and I wouldn't be eligable for the subsidized and unsubsidized anyways. I am so confused about this. Please help! I have less than 60 credits...I don't know how to pay for school or any of my other bills for that matter

Are there any Financial Aid plans that would help with the purchasing of equipment (i.e. computers, cameras) for Graphic Design Majors? Especially if a private loan is not an option and co-signer is not available.

My mom works her --- off, she has two jobs but she makes too much money according to FAFSA. My Dad is a derelict who basically lost the house and his business due to gambling. It's actually a wonder he isn't in white collar jail. I have some money from my grandpa but not enough - I'd still need about 15,000.00 to attend (out of state). What should I do. Mom can't take any more debt on due to credit score.

    Thanks,

    Jeanine

I have read on several webpages (for companies that charge for financial advice) that you can lower your EFC rather substantually. They don't give details (until after you pay). Can you lower your EFC, and how do you do it?
    Thank you!!
