November is National Scholarship Month!

National Scholarship Month

The month of November is devoted to raising awareness of the need for scholarship support for postsecondary education. Scholarships help students realize their dreams. (National Scholarship Month was previously celebrated in the month of May from 1998 to 2007. It was switched from May to November in 2008 to coincide with the start of the main scholarship application season.)

Scholarships are a form of student financial aid that does not need to be repaid. Scholarships are awarded by foundations, philanthropists, non-profit organizations, businesses and colleges to help students pay for college. Some scholarships are awarded for academic merit, while others may focus on artistic or athletic talent or other personal characteristics. There are even a variety of unusual scholarships based on more esoteric talent such as duck calling or knitting with wool.

Students discover the scholarships for which they are eligible by searching one of several large scholarship matching sites, such as the FastWeb scholarship database.

National Scholarship Month is sponsored by the National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA), the national professional organization for scholarship sponsors. NSPA promotes student access to higher education through scholarships. (National Scholarship Month was originally sponsored by Scholarship America, the largest private sector scholarship and educational support organization. ) For more information on creating a scholarship, see FinAid's Scholarship Design & Management section.

Access and Choice

Scholarships not only make it possible for students to pursue a college education, improving access to higher education, but they also provide the recipients with greater flexibility. This allows students to choose the college that best meets their needs, without worrying about having to pay back large loans.

College scholarships also offer other benefits for students beyond the money. The act of applying for a scholarship can help the student clarify his or her goals and decide upon a career path. Winning a scholarship can be a mark of excellence, opening doors for the student to new educational experiences. Many scholarship sponsors provide their winners with long-term advocacy and support, through mentorship and other services. The scholarship recipients also get to interact with each other, building life-long friendships and creating a synergy that challenges and inspires them to strive for excellence.

Benefits of Investing in Higher Education

The Institute for Higher Education Policy's report, Investing in America's Future: Why Student Aid Pays Office for Society and Individuals, highlights the many ways in which investments in higher education benefit the nation.

Proposal for a Scholarship Sponsorship Tax Credit

Mark Kantrowitz, FinAid's publisher, has written a proposal for a Scholarship Sponsorship Tax Credit.. This proposal would establish a tax credit to create a public-private partnership for leveraging increased private sponsorship of college scholarships.

Scholarship Providers of the Year Named

When Ronald Simon’s company sold its first kitchen cabinet back in 1989, Simon hoped that his business would grow. What he never expected was to put hundreds of underprivileged kids through college. But that’s exactly what happened.

Today, Simon’s scholarship organization—the Simon Family Foundation— supports over 300 students throughout the country, spending roughly $32,000 on each, a year.

The Foundation was today named the Independent Scholarship Provider of the Year. Auburn University was named the College and University Scholarship Provider of the Year. The awards were given at the National Scholarship Providers Association annual conference in New Orleans. Both recipients accepted awards from FastWeb Publisher, Mark Kantrowitz, who hand-selected each winner.

Both scholarships are geared toward underserved and at-risk communities.

The Simon Family Foundation is unique in that it begins providing support the summer before students’ junior year in high school.

Simon scholars receive a renewable $4,000 college grant, but that’s not all. They also get $1,000 cash to open a bank account, a notebook computer, SAT/ACT test preparation courses, academic tutoring, college coaching and application assistance. The organization also provides them with college campus tours, life-skills training, financial literacy seminars, etiquette courses, peer and professional mentoring, exposure to the arts and even takes them shopping for business attire, including suits.

Kathy Simon Abels, executive director of the Simon Family Foundation and the daughter of Ron Simon, said her family came up with the idea for the scholarship after her father’s company, RSI, which manufactures cabinetry, among other things, grew to a successful level. According to its website, the company has over 5,000 employees and made over $700 million in its first 18 years of business.

Abels said the family had a round-table family discussion on what to do with the money. Together, they decided donating it to education was the best move.

Find Out Where You Can Learn More About These Providers -- Read On >>

[page]

“We wanted to intervene before kids got to college—to help students who should go to college but probably couldn’t without our help,” Abels said. “We give them two things: the financial means and the message that we believe in them, which is a powerful message.”

Mike Ammerman, also with the Simon Foundation, said for the organization, it’s not about selecting the most high-performing kids with the best GPAs.

“Our mission is to change lives,” Ammerman said. “So we’re looking for kids with lots of potential.”

Naomi Wadkins, Scholarship Advisor at Auburn, accepted the award for the University. Auburn’s Provost Leadership Undergraduate Scholarship Retention Program (PLUS) provides undergraduate students from underserved and at risk populations each year with a renewable $2,000 scholarship.

Auburn’s program supports students academically and socially through a week-long orientation program leadership seminars, study and tutoring sessions, college success seminars (including time management and note-taking and study skills), peer mentoring and career counseling. The program also encourages the students to consider pursuing graduate degree programs after they receive a Bachelor’s degree. Many of the students are first generation college students.

Kantrowitz said he hand-selected these two scholarship providers because they are role models for other scholarship providers. The running theme at the conference was proactive intervention programs, he said, and ensuring that students not only get to college, but succeed.

“Both of this year’s winners demonstrate that scholarships are about more than just providing money for college,” Kantrowitz said. “It’s about eliminating all barriers to student success.”

Abels said the Simon Family Foundation now offers other assistance to other philanthropists interested in creating similar scholarships of their own, so they don’t have to “recreate the wheel”.

FastWeb Winner's Circle: Jane Stanley from Indiana

Wondering who wins the scholarships posted on FastWeb? Students just like you win all the time! FastWeb has scholarships for high school, college, graduate and non-traditional students.

Meet our most recent addition to the FastWeb Winner's Circle, Jane Stanley. Jane, a returning graduate student, says she found her scholarship while searching FastWeb for her 20 year old son! Find out how Jane won and ger her advice on how to win a scholarship of your own.

Congratulations Jane!

Name: Jane Stanley

Age: 49

From: Greenfield, Indiana

School: Attending Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Graduate School

Year: This is a Masters of Divinity program and I am in the end of my second year of a 3.5 yr. program.

Tell us about the scholarship you won through FastWeb! I won the The Rowley Scholarship

Amount: $2,000 (Broken up in to two $1,000 checks, one per semester).

How many scholarships did you apply for before you won: I probably applied to 8-10 scholarships. I also am a cancer survivor, and am planning on applying for many of those after the first of the year. Interestingly, I went on this site to prove to my 20 year old son that there is lots of money and opportunities to find money for his education, and in doing the research, I found several that would apply to me. I applied to them all and was fortunate to be selected by the Division of Home Missions for the Rowely Scholarship.

What did you have to do to apply?: This scholarship required that I have at least a 3.5 in Grad School, then I had to complete the form, and be a member of the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. I had to prove I was enrolled in school and provide a letter of recommendation from a professor with whom I had worked with who could speak to my commitment, work ethic, and assess my future potential. Then they send the check to my home!

How long did it take to hear back from the scholarship provider?: Within 2 weeks I heard back. And then I heard from them once more, confirming that they had the letter of recommendation and my course records. Finally they notified me that I had been selected.

What did you use the money for? I used the money to buy school supplies, and applied it to everyday living expenses.

[widget:fastweb_winners_circlein_article_]

Jane's advice to other scholarship applicants, in her own words: "Don't give up!! There are lots of opportunities out there, but not everyone can win. I also suggest that you look at various opportunities. Lots of community groups offer scholarships that often go unused because people don't step up and apply. You have to be persistent, and make sure your application sparkles, no misspelled words, etc. Also, and this may sound a little weird, but if something really difficult happened in your life early on you can find money. For example did you unfortunately lose a parent to cancer? While this is very sad, there are numerous scholarships for kids in that situation, or are you a cancer survivor from a childhood illness? If so there are lots of opportunities out there. Even if you are healthy now, your past fight can get you in the door."

Post Graduate Plans: Following graduation in May of 2011, I will hopefully be ordained into the ministry, and will then begin serving in a church setting.

Have you won a scholarship through FastWeb? E-mail us at info@FastWeb.com and be the next FastWeb member featured in the FastWeb Winner's Circle!

FastWeb's Winner Circle: Johana from California

What is the name of the scholarship? And how much did you win?

The name of the scholarship was Sam Walton Community Scholarship—Wal-Mart Foundation and I won $1,000.

When did you apply for the scholarship? And how soon before you heard back?

I believe the deadline was in May, and I heard back from them in July—so about two months of waiting.

What did you use the scholarship money for?

The scholarship money went straight to the university so it paid for a portion of my tuition.

How do you stay organized in your scholarship search?

[widget:1577]

FastWeb Announces 140 Character Essay Winner

FastWeb is happy to announce the winner of the Leg I of our Scholarship Triathlon’s world’s shortest essay contest. Our criteria: write a “nano-essay” not to exceed a standard tweet-length of 140 characters on one of the following topics:

•	The best way you have used technology to your advantage in school in the past year.

•	How do you think technology will impact your college career?

We judged over 3,500 essays. Our consideration was given three-parts of equal weight: originality, creativity, and ability to accurately answer the question.

Sounds easy doesn’t it? I mean…how long does it take to write a tweet or shoot off a text? The answer, we found, was that this assignment was far from easy. I know what you’re thinking, “Yeahhhhh right. That’s like the easiest thing in the world…” Trust me, I can almost see you scoffing, smirking confidently and thinking how you could “crank out such an overgrown haiku in less than two minutes.” And you may have been right; maybe you could have “dropped science like Galileo dropped an orange.” And if that’s the case then you should definitely try next time, because it’s easier to say you can do something than actually doing it, just ask Uncle Rico, he was pretty sure he could throw those dang footballs over them mountains. The truth is, writing this tiny essay was harder than it sounds, anyone battling a low word count knows it’s not easy to pack a lot of information into a little paragraph—Attempting to answer complex questions in 140 characters is quite challenging. Take that italicized bit for example; it was over 100 characters too long for this contest.

Now, if you were like 85% of our enthusiastic entrants, your first challenge would have been in not getting tripped up by the instructions. The key word in those directions was the 140-character part. It wasn’t 140 words, nor 140 pages, and certainly not 140 sentences, trust us—we saw all of the above. As we know from texting and tweeting, letters, dashes, hyphens, spaces, commas, ellipses, etc, take up a lot of space, like it or not-- space takes space—this essay forced entrants to be very economical and impactful with their language.

As judges we read many hundreds of entertaining, interesting, heartfelt, and eloquent essays. Unfortunately, we had to disqualify a great majority of these excellent entries because they ranged from 140 words to several pages in length. While such a roomy word count allows for more expansive freedom of expression, it also eliminated many otherwise worthy participants from our micro-essay contest.

A second, and more frustrating aspect of judging was in discovering the essays that were soooo close to 140 characters, the funny, succinct, poetic little bursts of imagination that were 143 characters, or 148. These were like finding diamonds and then realizing they were cubic zirconium, so teasingly close to inclusion, but ultimately unable to cut it.

Next, we enjoyed the rarest of gems, those perfect participants, the entrants that followed the directions down to a texty-tweet-T, delivering creative uses of punctuation, text-speak, and funny and honest answers to our questions. It was a challenge to sort through these essays because we could tell that, like boiling down a lot of wordy-starches into a potent drink, it had taken some real time to create a sound idea and distil an entire essay into a sentence or two.

[widget:1577]

Finally, without any further ado, we present you our top three winners from third place to first.

In third place and answering Question II, is a frenetic symbol-heavy equation to success.

Online classes = computer + internet + downloadable books (-$) + research + flash drives & CDs = gr8 grades = diploma = job interviews = $ = career! M

Coming in at second place and answering Question I, is a powerful example of technology as a tool of communication.

25 hrs + my brain + my Dell + sweat & tears = 1 girl who now has a voice. 2 more years + sweat + tears + Windows & my Dell = MS, CCC-SLP!

Finally, our winner of Leg One of the FastWeb Triathlon and answering Question II, Jessica Simkins for her eloquent completeness of thought. She manages to answer the question fully and subtly with only a handful of well-placed, well-conceived letters. A+.

Technology has created my PC autobiography: accomplishments in .doc, tastes in .wma, connections in @, memories in .jpg, the world in .com

Congratulations to our top finalists and we look forward to all of your contributions in Leg II of the Triathlon.

FastWeb's Winner Circle: Kathleen from Tennessee

What is the name of the scholarship? And how much did you win?

The scholarship was the Janette Ranking Foundation Grant and I won $2,000 per year.

What did you use your scholarship money for?

I used it for books and buying a computer.

How do you stay organized in your scholarship search?

I do some research on FastWeb as a starting point. You will quickly see if you qualify for the scholarship. It is the easiest way to manage all the information.

What motivates to you apply for scholarships?

If my interests and goals match those presented by the sponsor I will apply. If not, don't try to fake it through the process. It is easiest to be true to yourself and it will be reflected in your essays.

Do you have any words of advice for other FastWeb members?

Don't get upset when you do not hear back from these grants with the thousands of people applying for the scholarships. You have to realize the odds of winning one are slim. I do suggest applying for the scholarships that are from your college. Many of those are under used.

Don't be discouraged, college is hard enough and you have to make hard choices. If you win a scholarship, it is an added bonus. If you don't, you are no worse for the experience. Just remember that most scholarships are based on who you are so be who you are when you are writing. You are not trying to impress the professor with your language—you are trying to stick out in a sea of other applicants.

Sign up for FastWeb's newsletters and get our most popular and useful insider advice, tips and awards sent straight to your inbox every week. In our newsletters, you'll also find out about under-the-radar scholarships you might have never known were available!

And, never miss a scholarship you qualify for again! Sign up for our scholarship alerts and get notified whenever a new scholarship match becomes available, and as your deadlines near.

Follow these steps to be sure you don't miss a beat (or cash for school) from FastWeb!

To receive the newsletter:

1) In your profile, there are tabs at the top to set your site preferences. Here, you can go into your
Account Settings.

2) Scroll down to the third section labeled Subscriptions.

3) Under “Subscriptions” there are multiple check boxes. Update your subscriptions by checking the boxes next to "newsletters", "email notifications" and "special deals and discounts".

What if this box is checked but I haven’t received any newsletters?

This is probably because your email client filters FastWeb’s community updates as SPAM. Resolve the issue with the following steps:

1) Search your SPAM mail to see if there are any old FastWeb newsletters stored in it.

3) Add webmaster@fastweb.com to your email contact list, so that this doesn’t happen again.

Winners Announced for Bank of America Student Voices Essay Contest!

After 4,000 essays and a long week of deliberations, we have finally selected our two winners of The Bank of America Student Voices Essay Contest!

The contest asked students to answer the question “What’s the best way a student can manage their money in current economic times?” in 250-350 words. Two awards were given -- one to a student in the 3.0-4.0 GPA range and another in the 2.0-2.99 GPA range.

Congratulations to our economically savvy winners: MeganC173 in the 3.0-4.0 GPA range and Rashud T. in the 2.0-2.99 GPA range.

FastWeb’s own Financial Aid Guru, Mark Kantrowitz chose the final essay. He said he chose Megan’s “excellent” essay because, “It starts with a story, grabbing your attention, and is well-written.” He also gave Honorable Mentions to Richard Watt and Sana Asif.

Kantrowitz said the top essays largely focused on several themes which are all solid ways to be more economically savvy. Here are some of the highlights:

1. Psychological tricks to make it more difficult to spend money. These include such advice as paying with cash instead of credit (a credit card feels the same whether you're spending $5 or $500), using checks or debit cards (or a prepaid credit card) instead of credit cards to prevent spending beyond one's means, not carrying credit cards with you, having just one credit card, setting up an automatic transfer of income to savings through direct deposit (if the money isn't in your wallet, you can't spend it), changing small bills into big bills since you'll be less likely to break a $50 bill for a two dollar slurpie, working weekends during the school year and full-time during the summer (not only to earn money, but to have less time available to spend money).

2. Focusing on freebies and substituting less expensive alternatives for popular items. This includes attending free events instead of paid entertainment, such as the beach, camping, hiking, jogging, biking, walking in the park, visiting art galleries, spending time with friends, watching TV, borrowing books and movies from the library. Less expensive alternatives include matinee movies, fruit instead of candy or fast food, cutting down the portion size, buying at the grocery store instead of vending machines (pack bag lunches). Buying sensible clothes instead of popular brand names. Eating in instead of eating out. Homemade coffee instead of expensive Starbucks lattes. Less expensive cell phone plan and cutting back on the number of calls and text messages. Reusing a bottle with tap water instead of buying bottled water. Sharing clothing with friends. Use public transportation. Also, buying used textbooks at half price (and selling them back to the bookstore at the end of the semester).

3. Seeking discounts to cut costs. This includes waiting until the item is on sale, buying bargains when prices are low in anticipation of future needs, clipping coupons, taking advantage of student discounts, and shopping at discount stores. Comparison shop and research products before you buy. Work at a popular store in order to get the employee discount.

4. Limit your spending and live as frugally as possible. Don't spend money you don't have -- spend less than what you earn. Only use credit cards if you can afford to pay off the balance in full at the end of the month. Avoid impulse buys. Institute a mandatory 1-2 day waiting period before any major purchases.

5. Distinguish between needs and wants (mandatory vs. discretionary spending). Either set a hard limit on all discretionary spending, or cut it out entirely. Prioritize your needs and wants so that needs are addressed before any wants. Focus on what is really important. Ask yourself "Can I live without it? Is it really necessary? Will having bought it matter to me ten years from now?". Discretionary spending includes trendy drinks like Starbucks and Jamba Juice or other beverages, eating out, smoking, clothing & shoes, jewelry, entertainment, junk food, fast food, movies, and other luxuries.

6. Budgeting. This includes both descriptive budgets (where you track how you spend your money in simple categories like clothing, gas, entertainment, savings) and prescriptive budgeting (where you set limits on spending in certain categories such as luxuries and discretionary spending). One possible technique is to set a reasonable but low limit on all entertainment and discretionary spending per week. If you cut it out entirely, you'll be less likely to comply with the budget. Even just a descriptive budget can help rein in spending, since people rarely realize just how much a latte a day costs per year. Budgeting can also help you save in advance for a large expense, which establishes the good habit of delayed gratification.

7. Save. Pay yourself first by saving before you spend any money. Save at least 10% of each paycheck or other income in a FDIC insured interest-bearing bank account. (Some suggested using an online bank account for a higher interest rate on savings.) Save as much as you can; some even suggest saving at least half your paycheck. Another tip is to establish a rainy day fund of 3-6 months expenses (as opposed to 3-6 months earnings). Some suggest saving a set amount of money per day (e.g., $1 or $2) so that when you forgo a latte, you're consciously doing it to save. Another good idea is to have a jar or can or piggy bank for all your spare change at the end of the day (also, Bank of America's Keep the Change program) as an easy way to save.

A few of the essays talked about low interest rates on savings accounts and talked about investing as an opportunity to buy undervalued but high quality stocks.

8. Minimize college costs. This includes applying for scholarships (an obvious ploy because we're a scholarship site, but still good advice), getting good grades to help win scholarships, minimizing debt, borrowing federal first, moving off-campus to save on living expenses, and using a creditworthy cosigner on private student loans. Also starting off at a community college and later transferring to a four-year college.

9. Get organized. This includes keeping track of student loan debt and setting up a long-term financial plan. Some argued for choosing short, middle and long-term goals. Some recommended the Mint and Wesabi sites.

10. Get educated. Several students recommended learning about finance by reading financial news and finance blogs.

11. Get a job. While many of the essays talked about focusing on schoolwork as the best insurance against unemployment, several students talked about getting a job or creating a job as a way of earning extra money. Several recommended creating a student business such as tutoring or babysitting. Others recommended getting a nearby job to save on fuel and travel time. One recommended holding a garage sale to sell of possessions that are no longer needed.

Check out our first winning essay!

Strapped for Cash

By MeganC173 of John Foster Dulles High School

3.0-4.0 GPA Range

“Just pick up the phone and tell them. Dude…they’re parents, they’re going to find out anyway. That’s just the way it is.”

Ring! Ring!

“Hello”

“Hey mom! It’s me.”

Pause

“What happened? Did you get in trouble”

“Uh… no. Everything’s good… it’s just that I need a little cash.”

“Already? Haven’t you been saving up, and didn’t we just send you $100 a week ago?”

“Well yea… but you know how the school has a study abroad program? Well I already signed up and the deadline to pay is next week, and I don’t have enough money. I was saving up…but I got a little sidetracked with my money.”

“Well…okay. How much do you need?”

“$1,500.”

“FIFTEEN HUNDRED DOLLARS!?!?!?!?!?!”

This scenario is a very common problem with students who do not understand how to effectively manage their money, and if you add poor money management skills with the current economy it can become a serious issue. There are a couple of ways that students can manage their money, which in the end will save them from that dreaded call home.

The easiest way to efficiently manage your money is to track where you spend it. You may not realize how much you spend on the little things here and there. Tracking every purchase will help you decide which purchases are necessary and which ones you can do without. Along with tracking your purchases, if you budget yourself to a specific dollar amount a week you will find that your money will last longer. You should also set aside a certain amount if you know there is a big expense coming. If the school requires a big expense a couple of months later, set aside a certain amount ahead of time so you will be able to afford it. It is also imperative to compare prices before you buy. Instead of buying new books, rent or buy used ones for half the price.

Keeping these tips in mind will avoid money problems for students. Especially during our current economy, saving money is one of the smartest things to do.

Next Page: Check out the Second Winning Essay Here >>

Find scholarships now!

[page]

Our second winning essay!

So Much To Do.. So Little Money

By Rashud T. of Hampton University

2.0- 2.99 GPA range

“What’s happenin’ this weekend?” This question is a common one on a Friday at Virginia’s Hampton University campus.

The answer to this question could be one of many things competing for students’ limited supply of money. Having so much available to do, can be challenging and frustrating because students aren’t often able to adjust to life away from the financial care of their parents without some pain.

Students want to shop, eat out, and do extracurricular activities like they were able to do pretty regularly at home. However, because most students don’t have a job until their junior year, whatever lifestyle they were used to living has been abruptly changed.

Setting up and sticking to a budget, along with maintaining a savings regimen are good, concrete steps towards achieving financial well-being. Saving money requires discipline, i.e., utilizing one’s pre-paid campus meal plan more often than going out to eat. Living within the means of a budget, also requires discipline, urges for extra things, which aren’t necessities can be, and probably should be ignored or postponed.

A good habit for students to practice is to look for bargains and to make smart purchases, such as buying used, instead of new textbooks, or replacing candy purchases with fruit purchases.

Many students have money in savings and checking accounts. This is a good way to keep funds for what is needed, and to save money for things that aren’t needed right away. When well-maintained, such accounts help to train students to manage their precious financial resources.

College life is fun, exciting, and educational and meant to be that way. Still, it is equally important for students to think about more than just their studies and the parties. The impact to their lifestyle of throwing their budget out the window at the first sign of a weekend party could be a decision that reverberates loudly for a good part of their college experience.

Congratulations again to our winners! Stay tuned for more scholarships from FastWeb!

Michael Jackson’s $300 Million Legacy

While no one disputes he was the King of Pop, what you may not have known is that he was a big philanthropist — to the tune of $300 million -- to various charities.
Winning Essay Tips: The $500 Mistake, Part II

Part II of our "what NOT to do" series on winning an essay contests.

The Bank of America Student Voices Essay Contest drew in 4,000 essays-- about average for a contest of this size.

With odds like these, you can’t afford to make even one small mistake in your entry. Remember, the judges will use any excuse they can to disqualify your essay-- so don't give them the opportunity.

This essay writer didn’t follow the rules of the essay contest-- or the rules of the English language.

Check out this real life entry to see what went wrong:

At this point in our economy I would not invest in company's to keep money safe. I wouldn't put it in banks either. What I would do is try to find a way to store money in my own house. Examples include, safes, small lockboxes, or a "secret spot". I think that our economy isn't done crashing; the reason being that we are trillions of dollars in debt and the only way to get rid of it is to go bankrupt. If the US goes bankrupt then any money left in banks or the businesses will be worth nothing. In fact I would exchange a small amount of my money into another currency like the euro, that way if the US were to go bankrupt I would still have some kind of money. Now, if the economy weren't to

[widget:1537]

completely crash and the US go bankrupt then you would still have your money so there would be no harm done. Also, to manage it I would make a monthly allowance for myself that way I would only use a certain amount of money and the rest I would save up or use to pay for bills and food, if I were living on my own. For saving money I would always save at least 15% of my paycheck that way if I were to get in a wreck or some other unexpected expense came up I would have money to use that could potentially cover it. Bills will be tricky to pay for and still have money left over. Figure out how much per month you spend on bills and set about $50 dollars more than that aside for bills. Then I would figure out how much I use for food and set aside that much plus an additional $20 incase I use more than expected. Whatever is left, which won’t me much admittedly, will be money you can use for whatever purposes you want. Also to cut back on cost of bills I recommend getting a roommate or two, that way you won’t use as much money on bills.

So, what was wrong and what was right?

This writer did stay within the word count and eventually got around to answering the question posed. But there was a lot more wrong with this article than right.

Here's what was wrong:

No Paragraphs--The writer submitted the essay as one block of text with no line breaks or paragraphs. Not only is this improper English, but it's a turn-off to judges who will find it hard to read.

Underlining or ALL CAPS-- Don't use them! You're not chatting in instant messenger, you're trying to impress a scholarship judge. Let your words and strong writing speak for itself.

Apostrophes-- Be careful not to make words possessive that shouldn’t be. A prime example of a misused apostrophe is the common mistake of confusing "its" and "it's".

Capitalization-- Use capital letters properly! That means they should be used at the start of a sentence and for proper names.

Misspellings and Poor grammar-- If you're unsure about your grammar, take it to your school's writing lab or have an adult or trusted friend look over it. Ask yourself, does this make sense? And if nothing else, run a spell check.

Answer the Question-- In this example, the writer doesn’t answer the question properly. Instead of sticking to how a how to manage money in CURRENT economic times, he forecasts a worst case scenario and explains how to deal with that.

Keep it formal-- Even a fun or promotional essay contest should not be too informal. By all means, feel free to include an off-beat idea or a unique or creative answer-- this is encouraged! But remember to write in a professional tone. Your essay should not read as though you're chatting with a friend.

Do some research-- Even in an opinion piece, try to back your ideas up by research. This essay writer should have better researched his thesis statement. If you put your money in a bank, not only will it collect interest, but the FDIC will insure your account for up to $100,000. That means that even if the bank goes bankrupt, you’ll still get your money. Need another reason not to keep your money in your house? What if you get robbed or the house burns down? Or even better, check out this story from earlier this month about a woman who accidentally threw out $1 million of her mother’s life savings stored inside an old mattress! A little research goes a long way.

So, now that you've got a sneak peak at a few essays that didn't make the cut, find out which one did! The Bank of America Student Voices Essay Contest winner will be announced on FastWeb on Monday June 29th! The final winning essay will be judged by FastWeb's own Financial Aid Guru, Mark Kantrowitz.
