The College

Sage College of Albany is a private, coeducational, residential and commuter college of applied studies offering associate and bachelor's degree programs in a 2+2 model and bachelor's degree completion programs for working adults who desire flexible schedules and formats. Founded in 1949, the College provides a solid, liberal arts foundation to 1,400 full-time and part-time students, regardless of the major of study. Students from throughout the Northeast and ten countries attend the Sage College of Albany.

Conveniently located in New York's Capital Region, innovative internship and employment opportunities abound for current students and graduates within business and industry, state and local government agencies, and among social service and health agencies. In the heart of Albany's University Heights neighborhood, Sage College of Albany is situated on a 15-acre campus consisting of fourteen buildings, six of which surround a central, landscaped quad with plenty of green space and mature trees.

Sage College of Albany is part of the Sage Colleges, a federation of three distinct colleges. The others are Russell Sage College, which offers bachelor's degrees to women, and Sage Graduate School, which offers ten master's degree programs to men and women. Sage College of Albany is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Sage College of Albany offers a variety of residence opportunities for students. A coeducational campus residence hall is available for first-year students. Students with advanced standing have the opportunity to reside in the brand new University Heights residence hall. Women attending Sage College of Albany also have the opportunity to reside at Russell Sage College through the cross-campus residential program. All residence halls are hardwired for access to SageNet, voice mail, and cable television. Students may also receive assistance with finding nearby apartments.

Students at Sage College of Albany can strengthen and complement their educational experience by getting involved in campus activities. Participation in student organizations enables them to engage with a variety of people and develop valuable leadership and team-building skills. Available activities include the Student Senate, Phoenix (the student newspaper), the Sage College Activities Board, Phi Theta Kappa (honors fraternity), Art Club, Orientation and Student Mentors, ALDANA mentors, travel-abroad programs, the Legal Studies Club, Vernacular (the art and literary magazine), Sketch Club, Delta Epsilon Chi, the Marketing club, the Drama Club, and the Residence Hall Council.

Location

Sage College of Albany is within view of Empire State Plaza and the New York State Capitol. The metropolitan tri-city region of Troy, Albany, and Schenectady and environs constitute a region of nearly a million people. Air, bus, rail, and superhighway transportation are all available. The lively town of Saratoga Springs and the beautiful Adirondack region are less than a half hour away, and New York City can be reached easily by rail. Montreal, Boston, and the many ski areas of Vermont are well within a 3-hour drive.

Majors and Degrees

Sage College of Albany offers a wide variety of degrees and programs. Students can earn Associate in Arts (A.A.) degrees in humanities, intercultural and global studies, liberal arts, and social sciences; Associate in Science (A.S.) degrees in communications, computing sciences, fine arts, marketing and management, and science; Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degrees in computing technologies, fine arts, fine arts/illustration, graphic design, interior design, legal studies, marketing and management, photography, and professional studies; Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in business administration, computer information systems, computer network administration, information design, interdisciplinary studies, law and society, legal studies, and physical education; a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) degree; or a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree in fine arts and graphic design.

Sage College of Albany internships and co-op programs assist students in sharpening skills and clarifying goals while gaining marketable experience. Field placements in business, communications, graphic design, interior design, legal assistance, and social science are offered throughout the Capital Region at such locations as the New York State Assembly, major retail stores, law firms, advertising and public relations agencies, banks, newspapers and magazines, television and radio stations, New York State offices, hospitals and health centers, and community and nonprofit agencies.

Through the Center for Extended Learning, Sage College of Albany offers Sage After Work, a unique opportunity for adult students to continue their undergraduate education and complete a bachelor's degree. As a result of the center's flexible schedule and delivery methods, students can pursue bachelor's degrees on a full- or part-time basis while maintaining employment. These bachelor's degree completion programs are available in accounting, business administration, computer information systems, computer network administration, criminal justice, interdisciplinary studies, legal studies, liberal studies, occupational therapy, psychology, psychology/human services, and social studies.

Certificates are available at the Sage College of Albany in the areas of computing business applications, computing network support, help desk management and operations, legal studies, and Web site design and administration.

Academic Program

Sage College of Albany operates on a two-semester calendar. Additional courses may be taken during either of the College's two condensed summer sessions. In addition to core requirements and requirements of the selected major, a student must satisfy the College's general education requirement by taking humanities, social sciences, and math/science electives.

Internships, part-time work experience, and community service allow students to gain practical experience directly related to their academic major. Students may participate in credit-bearing internships, which not only extend the classroom experience, but also let students investigate career opportunities.

Off-Campus Arrangements

Sage College of Albany is a member of a consortium of fifteen educational institutions known as the Hudson-Mohawk Association of Colleges and Universities. A course that is not offered at the Sage College of Albany may be taken by full-time students through cross-registration with other consortium members at no additional cost.

Sensitivity to international interdependence and to the importance of multicultural perspectives is fostered in various ways in the College's offerings. Sage sponsors several international study opportunities and is affiliated with other colleges for additional programs. Each year, the Sage Colleges offer a variety of international-travel courses.

Academic Facilities

In addition to a dozen academic buildings, there is a campus center; a gymnasium; a new, 32,000-square-foot fine arts building; and an art gallery. Sage College of Albany has an Academic Computer Center, a computerized classroom with an Electronic Classroom Training Center, and an Academic Support Center. All Sage students have an e-mail address with access to the Internet, and all residence halls are hardwired for access to SageNet.

The Sage College of Albany library includes 373,000 bound volumes, 4,000 microform items, 34,000 audio/video/CDs and more than 1,000 subscribed periodicals. Through the consortium and the Capital District Library Council, fifty area libraries are brought together for rapid sharing of resources through interlibrary loans in an addition to an automated retrieval system that links students to more than 6,000 other libraries and 500 different databases.

Costs

Tuition for 2003–04 is $14,500. Room and board costs are $6866 (based on a fifteen-meal plan). The comprehensive fee is $250, and the technology fee is $320 for residents or $120 for commuters. The total cost for a full-time resident student is $22,000. Books and supplies are estimated at $800, and transportation is estimated at $600.

Financial Aid

Sage College of Albany administers more than $1 million in grants and scholarships to students with financial need, records of academic achievement, and special characteristics. Scholarships not based on financial need are competitive. Sage College of Albany, as a member of the Sage Colleges, has a long-standing commitment to assisting students and their families in meeting the costs of a private college education. The College works to meet this need on an individual basis through a combined package of scholarships, awards, and loans inclusive of federal, state, and private sources. More than 86 percent of Sage College of Albany students receive financial assistance. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required for financial aid consideration by the College. The preferred application date for new students applying for financial aid is March 1. Assistance may be available on a limited basis after this date.

Faculty

With a 12:1 student-faculty ratio and an average class size of 18, Sage's 160 full-time faculty members can give close personal attention to each student's educational goals. The Sage Colleges professors are recognized for excellent teaching and for the friendly and supportive relationships they have with their students. Every Sage College of Albany student is assigned a faculty adviser and receives special attention right from the start.

Student Government

The Student Government is a group of representatives, elected from the student body at Sage College of Albany, who serve as a legislative advisory body for the consideration of problems and policies affecting all students. The Student Government is the official liaison between the students and the College's administration. In the area of student affairs, the Student Government serves as a legislative body and it also has the responsibility of approving all funding for student organizations.

Admission Requirements

Each applicant's potential for success at Sage College of Albany is considered on an individual basis. The College's goal is to admit students who will benefit from the collegiate environment and contribute to the Sage College of Albany community. An applicant must present an official high school transcript or an official copy of a GED score. An official transcript from each institution attended after high school is required of transfer applicants. A completed application and nonrefundable processing fee of $30 are also required. A letter of recommendation should also be submitted on behalf of the applicant from a teacher, guidance counselor, employer, or other person familiar with the applicant's potential for success. An applicant who is ranked in the top 20 percent of his or her secondary school class may elect to submit SAT or ACT scores for consideration. Otherwise, scores from SAT or ACT exams are required. An art portfolio review is required for all art applicants.

Application and Information

Regular first-year students are encouraged to apply early in their senior year and are reviewed on a rolling basis. Transfer applications are also processed on a rolling basis each semester. International students should submit an application and also must achieve a score of at least 500 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), administered by the Education Testing Service.

An interview with a member of the admission staff is strongly recommended.
