The University
Founded in Providence in 1914, Johnson & Wales University (J&W) is a private, career-oriented institution offering programs that are geared to the success of a range of students. The University's 16,084 students attend classes at campuses in Providence, Rhode Island; North Miami, Florida; Denver, Colorado; and Charlotte, North Carolina. Most students are recent graduates of high school business, college-preparatory, and vocational/technical programs, representing fifty states and ninety countries. The academic focus of the University is on two- and four-year degree programs in business, culinary arts, food service, hospitality, teacher education, and technology. M.B.A. programs include global business leadership (with a concentration in accounting, financial services management, international trade, organizational leadership, or marketing) and hospitality and tourism global business leadership (with concentrations in event leadership, finance, marketing, and tourism planning). M.A. programs in teaching (with or without certification) include business and culinary/special education. The University also offers a doctoral program in educational leadership.
Students are involved in a variety of extracurricular activities. Nearly 20 percent of the University's population are members of national student organizations such as Business Professionals of America; Future Business Leaders of America (Phi Beta Lambda); Family, Career, Community Leaders of America (FCCLA); the National FFA; Junior Achievement; SkillsUSA; and Technology Association of America. The Student Activities Office and fraternities and sororities are among the many groups that schedule social functions throughout the academic year. Sports and fitness programs include aerobics, baseball, basketball, golf, ice hockey, sailing, soccer, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling.
The University maintains twenty-four residence halls throughout its four campuses. Student services include academic counseling and testing, a tutorial center, and health services. The University's Career Development Office provides extensive career planning and placement services. Within sixty days of graduation, 98 percent of J&W students have jobs in their chosen career field.
Johnson & Wales is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The hospitality programs in Providence are accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration.
Location
The location of each of the University's campuses enables students to take advantage of internship and part-time work activities offered by many nearby businesses, community groups, and government agencies. All of Johnson & Wales' city campuses retain a small-town feel and easy accessibility to students. The urban setting of the Providence, Rhode Island, campus provides students proximity to the city's many cultural and recreational facilities. In North Miami, Florida, the J&W campus is a short trip from the sun and fun of Fort Lauderdale and the culture and diversity of Miami. Denver, Colorado, offers students great opportunities as the nation's sixth-leading tourist destination and Fortune magazine's second best city in America to work and live. The Charlotte, North Carolina, campus is located in a vibrant urban setting that combines commercial and residential life. In its Continuing Education division, J&W's Providence campus offers associate and bachelor's degrees in business, culinary arts, hospitality, and technology. JWU also offers diploma programs in baking and pastry arts and culinary arts; certificate programs are offered in computer-aided drafting, paralegal studies, and legal nurse studies (a bachelor's degree is required for acceptance into the paralegal studies certificate program, and a student must be a registered nurse or hold an associate degree for acceptance into the legal nurse certificate program).

Academic Programs
Johnson & Wales University offers programs in business, culinary arts, food service, hospitality, teacher education, and technology within an academic structure of three 11-week terms. Classes generally meet four days a week, Monday through Thursday. The upside-down curriculum of the University provides immediate concentration in the student's chosen major. The associate degree is awarded after two years of successful study, at which time the student may continue studies toward the baccalaureate degree or seek immediate employment. Two degrees, the associate and the bachelor's, can result from a complete four-year course of study.
Learning by doing is an important part of career training at J&W, and many programs include laboratory studies as well as formal internship requirements. Special advanced-placement programs are featured for high school seniors with exceptional skills in culinary arts or baking and pastry arts. In addition, the University awards credit for certain courses based on the successful completion of Challenge, CLEP, or Portfolio Assessments. All degree candidates must successfully complete the required number of courses and/or quarter credit hours, as prescribed in the various curricula, with a minimum average of 2.0.
Off-Campus Programs
Learning at Johnson & Wales is not limited to the classroom. Many of the majors offer internships at University-owned facilities. The hotel-restaurant management program features an internship at the Johnson & Wales Inn, Radisson Airport Hotel, Bay Harbor Inn and Suites, or the DoubleTree Hotel; all are full-service hotel complexes owned and operated by the University (the Radisson and DoubleTree are corporate franchises). For all majors, optional selective career co-ops are available with cooperating businesses for students throughout the U.S. and worldwide, such as Marriott International, Hyatt Regency Hotels, Foxwoods Resort and Casino, and Putnam Investments. Most internships and co-ops are one term in duration and carry 13.5 quarter hours of credit. Foreign exchange and term-abroad programs are also offered.
Academic Facilities
The facilities of the Providence campus are located throughout the intimate state of Rhode Island and in nearby Massachusetts. The downtown Providence campus is home to the University's College of Business, Hospitality College, and School of Technology. A number of academic and residential facilities are located at this campus as well as several training facilities. The Harborside campus, also in Providence but located a short distance away, houses the University's College of Culinary Arts. This campus has four student residence halls as well as specialized classrooms and laboratories, production kitchens, bakeshops, dining rooms, a storeroom, and meat-cutting facilities. This campus is also home to the Alan Shawn Feinstein Graduate School, the Center for Education, the University Recreation and Athletic Center, a student activities office, a bookstore, a gymnasium, a dining center, a snack bar, and an arcade.
In North Miami, Florida, the campus is located in the heart of North Miami, between Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. Facilities include academic classrooms, production/demonstration kitchens, a bakeshop, residence halls, and a specially designed conference center.
The Denver, Colorado, campus, located in the Park Hill neighborhood, combines old-world charm with the latest technological resources, including stately turn-of-the-century buildings and newer student centers in a quiet park landscape. The traditional residential campus is fully wired with computers in every classroom and laboratory.
The Charlotte, North Carolina, campus is located in the heart of Gateway Village in Uptown Charlotte. The academic center is home to a 200-seat auditorium with a production kitchen, state-of-the-art culinary laboratories, classrooms, seminar rooms, and computer labs. A 750-bed student residence center with dining facilities is located within walking distance of the academic building.
Costs
Tuition at all campuses for 2005-06 is $19,200. The basic room-and-board plans range from $7185 to $9162. Each student is also charged a general fee of $900, and there is an orientation fee of $250 for new students. Books and supplies are estimated at $825 per year, depending on the program.

Financial Aid
Johnson & Wales students are eligible to apply for a variety of financial aid programs, including the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Work-Study, and Federal Perkins Loan programs. They are also eligible for University-based student scholarship and loan programs and state-supported grants and scholarships. In the past, approximately 90 percent of the University's entering students have received some sort of financial assistance. Students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the Federal Student Aid Processor to be considered for financial aid. Although there is no deadline, early application is strongly suggested for full consideration.
Faculty
The University's 444 full-time and 154 part-time undergraduate faculty members (all campuses) are oriented toward instruction rather than research. Many are chosen for their professional experience in business, culinary arts, hospitality services, teacher education, or technology. The student-faculty ratio is 30:1.
Student Government
Student Government Association (SGA) representatives serve as the link among students, faculty, and the administration to bring student-body concerns to the awareness of the University community.
Admission Requirements
Johnson & Wales University seeks students who are career-focused and have a true desire to succeed. Academic qualifications are important, but an applicant's motivation and interest in doing well are given special consideration. Graduation from high school or equivalent credentials are required for admission. It is recommended that students applying for admission into the culinary arts and baking and pastry arts programs have some prior education or experience in food service. Although no tests are required, all applicants are encouraged to submit scores from the SAT I or ACT. Students who wish to apply for the Honors Program must have either a score of 500 math and 500 verbal on the SAT or a score of 21 math and 21 verbal on the ACT. High school juniors may apply for early admission under the ACCESS Program. Transfer students are required to submit official high school and college transcripts and to have a minimum GPA of 2.0. Credits to be transferred from other institutions are evaluated on the basis of their equivalent at Johnson & Wales.
Application and Information
Johnson & Wales does not require an application fee. After submitting the application, the student is responsible for requesting that appropriate transcripts be forwarded to the Admissions Office of the University. While there is no deadline, students are advised to apply as early as possible before the intended date of enrollment to ensure full consideration of their application.
