In-Depth Description

HAWAII PACIFIC UNIVERSITY

Honolulu, Hawaii

The University

Hawaii Pacific University (HPU) is an independent, coeducational, career-oriented comprehensive university with a foundation in the liberal arts. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered in more than fifty areas. Hawaii Pacific prides itself on maintaining strong academic programs, small class sizes, individual attention to students, an outstanding faculty, and a student population as diverse as the United Nations. HPU is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.

HPU is the largest private university in Hawaii, with more than 8,000 students from every state in the union and more than 100 countries. The diversity of the student body stimulates learning about other cultures firsthand, both in and out of the classroom. There is no majority population at HPU. Students are encouraged to examine the values, customs, traditions, and principles of others to gain a clearer understanding of their own perspectives. HPU students develop friendships with students from throughout the United States and the world, important connections for success in the global economy of the twenty-first century.

In addition to the undergraduate programs, HPU offers several graduate programs: the M.B.A. (with ten concentrations), the Master of Science in Information Systems (M.S.I.S.), the Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.), the Master of Education in Secondary Education (M.Ed. in Secondary Education), the Master of Social Work (M.S.W.), and the Master of Arts (M.A.) in communications, diplomacy and military studies, global leadership, human resource management, organizational change, and teaching English as a second language.

HPU has NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports. Men's athletic programs include baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross-country, and tennis. Women's athletics include cheerleading, cross-country, softball, tennis, and volleyball.

The housing office at HPU offers many services and options for students. Residence halls with cafeteria service are available on the windward Hawaii Loa campus, while off-campus apartments are available in the Honolulu and Waikiki areas for those seeking more independent living arrangements.

Location

With two campuses linked by shuttle, Hawaii Pacific combines the excitement of an urban, downtown campus with the serenity of the windward Hawaii Loa residential campus, which is set in the lush foothills of the Koolau mountains. The main campus is located in downtown Honolulu, the business and financial center of the Pacific. Eight miles away, situated on 135 acres in Kaneohe, the windward Hawaii Loa campus is the site of the School of Nursing, the marine science program, and a variety of other course offerings. Students may take classes on whichever campus is most convenient. The Hawaii Loa campus is home to recreational facilities such as a soccer field, tennis courts, a softball field, a student center, and an exercise room. The beautiful weather, for which Hawaii is famous, allows for unlimited recreation opportunities year-round. The emphasis on a career-related curriculum keeps students focused on their academic goals. The economy in Hawaii makes cooperative education and internship opportunities hard to beat. Students desiring to expand their horizons in preparation for the changing global economy find Hawaii an exciting learning laboratory where East meets West. The many opportunities available at HPU provide for a healthy combination of school, work, and fun.

Forty-five of these credits provide the student with a strong foundation in the liberal arts, with the remaining credits composed of appropriate upper-division classes in the student's major and related areas. The academic year operates on a modified 4-1-4 semester system, featuring a five-week winter intersession. The University also offers extensive summer sessions. A student can earn up to 15 semester hours of credit during the summer. By attending these supplemental sessions, a student may complete the baccalaureate degree program in three years. A five-year B.S.B.A./M.B.A. program is also available.

Off-Campus Programs

Hawaii Pacific's academic and cocurricular programs are intertwined with the world of work. The University offers a comprehensive cooperative education/internship program through the Career Services Center, in which a student may enroll throughout his or her course of study. This program enables students to gain significant experience in a career-related position as well as earn academic credit and a salary. HPU students have done co-ops and internships at some of the world's best known companies and organizations, including American Express Financial Advisors; Deloitte & Touche, LLP; FBI; Hilton Hotels; Microsoft; Oceanic Institute; Polo Ralph Lauren; and Walt Disney World. The staff at the Career Services Center continues to work with students after graduation, from resume writing to job interview preparation.

Academic Facilities

The downtown campus comprises six buildings in the center of Honolulu's business district. HPU's newest facility is the Frear Center, which houses state-of-the-art classrooms, a communication lab, a robotics lab, and a graduate M.S.I.S. high-tech classroom. Hawaii Pacific's Meader Library provides a large collection of circulating books, special reference resources, newspapers from around the world, and periodicals. A number of special collections are housed with extensive business collections and a separate career development section. Meader Library has a tutoring center that provides free tutoring in all core subjects, a graduate reading room, and ample study space. A computerized search system allows students access to information from libraries throughout the nation. The Learning Assistance Center is the home of language labs and an audiotape and audiovisual library as well as the multimedia lab with the latest in interactive computer and CD-ROM technology. The recently expanded computer lab has more than 420 IBM-compatible PCs.

On the suburban and residential windward Hawaii Loa campus, academic life revolves around the Amos N. Starr and Juliette Montague Cooke Academic Center (AC). The AC houses faculty and staff member offices, classrooms, a theater, an art gallery, and the Atherton Learning Resources Center, which includes a library with extensive collections in the areas of Asian studies, marine science, and nursing. The Boyd MacNaughton Pacific Resource Room houses the Hawaiiana and Pacific special collections. The Academic Computer Center provides access to IBM computers.

To apply for aid, students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA may be submitted at any time, but the priority deadline is March1.

Faculty

Hawaii Pacific's dedicated professors put a priority on teaching. At HPU, teaching assistants are not found in the classroom, only qualified professors. Students receive the personal attention they need to excel. The student-faculty ratio is 18:1, and class size averages 25 students. Students get to know their professors as colleagues and mentors. HPU faculty members are actively involved in their academic fields and bring this experience to the classroom. Many of them are renowned leaders in their particular disciplines and come to HPU from leadership positions in business and industry. The University has 225 full-time and 220 part-time faculty members. Eighty percent have earned Ph.D.'s or terminal degrees in their fields. Hawaii Pacific has a staff of professional academic advisers whose primary responsibility is to assist students with academic programs and help them choose the right courses in the right sequence to meet their individual goals. Students meet with an adviser prior to every semester's registration.

Student Government

All registered students are members of the Associated Students of Hawaii Pacific University (ASHPU), which is headed by elected officers and class representatives. ASHPU supervises more than eighty clubs, organizations, and activities, including a literary magazine; a national awardwinning student newspaper; a pep band; an international vocal ensemble; preprofessional, cultural, and social organizations; service societies; dances; luaus; and cheerleading.

Admission Requirements

Hawaii Pacific seeks students who are motivated and show academic promise. The admissions office requires that applicants complete and forward the admission application and their high school transcripts. Transfer students should also submit college transcripts. SAT and/or ACT scores should be submitted if these scores are not posted in the transcripts. First-time freshmen are expected to have a minimum GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) in college-preparatory courses. Students with less than a 2.5 may be considered for admission but should also submit three letters of recommendation and a short essay on educational and personal objectives. HPU recommends that students complete 4 years of English, 2 years of math and social studies, and at least 1 year of history and science. Transfer students with 24 or more postsecondary credits are required to have a GPA of 2.0 or above. For students with less than 24 credits, a combination of college and high school GPA is used.

The Marine Science and Environmental Science Programs require a high school GPA of 3.0 or above and 3 years of science, including biology, chemistry, and physics, as well as mathematics through precalculus (trigonometry). Transfer students must demonstrate ability in science and math at the college level. Students not meeting the above criteria are encouraged to enroll at HPU without declaring a major to demonstrate the ability to do college-level work in science and math.
