The University
Farmingdale State University of New York is a coeducational, public college with nearly 6,000 undergraduate students. It is dedicated to educating students in the areas of business, applied arts and sciences, health sciences, and engineering technologies. A rich history of more than 80,000 graduates makes Farmingdale State a college with a legacy of excellence. Farmingdale State students enjoy small, personalized classes with dedicated faculty members who provide individual attention. Founded in 1912, Farmingdale State was Long Island's first public college and has a long and distinguished heritage. A four-year college with twenty-nine degrees, Farmingdale State offers students the opportunity to study in small classes taught by distinguished professors. The relationship formed between student and professor ensures students of the individual attention necessary for a successful college experience.
Students can commute to the campus, or they can reside on campus in one of the four residence halls. A new dorm housing 408 students in suites is scheduled to open in fall 2005. An active student life is important to the college experience, and making friends and building personal relationships are integral parts of life at Farmingdale State. Students can join one of the forty student clubs, hang out in the Java City coffeehouse, relax in the new Books 'n Beans student lounge, work out in the fitness center, or find a peaceful place to study in the Greenley Library.
Farmingdale State offers unique courses of study that prepare students to assume responsible positions in a wide variety of careers. All programs operate within four schools: Health Sciences, Engineering Technologies, Business, and Arts and Sciences. Because of its ideal location along the high-technology corridor on Long Island, many students combine their academic study with internships at local companies.
Farmingdale State offers a comprehensive athletic program as an NCAA Division III school and as a member of the prestigious Skyline Athletic Conference. Athletic facilities include the 94,000-square-foot gymnasium, with a 4,000-seat athletic center, an indoor swimming pool, three regulation basketball courts, five volleyball courts, four tennis courts, and an indoor track. There are also four indoor racquetball courts, four indoor squash courts, and a weight-training complex. In addition, outdoors there are twelve all-weather tennis courts, a quarter-mile all-weather track, a twenty-station golf driving range, lacrosse/soccer fields, and a softball field.
The Farmingdale State intercollegiate program is one of the finest in the country, with many teams receiving national and regional recognition. Sixteen teams include men's and women's basketball, cross-country, indoor track, lacrosse, outdoor track, and soccer; women's volleyball; and men's baseball, golf, and softball.
A new $2.5-million baseball stadium is scheduled to open in 2005. This 1,000-seat stadium, which features field turf, dugouts, lights, batting cages, two bullpen warmup areas, a press box, and a concession area, is Phase I of Farmingdale State's master plan for the Department of Athletics. When completed, the Athletic Complex is anticipated to also include an oudoor 8-lane track encircling a new field for soccer and lacrosse. The softball field is scheduled to be expanded with new dugouts and bleachers. New tennis courts are scheduled to be built, and plans are underway for the renovation of the Nold Hall facility.
Location
At Farmingdale State, students can enjoy the benefits of a traditional 380-acre northeast campus that is rich in historical buildings. Its central location in the heart of Long Island allows limitless opportunities for recreational and cultural pursuits or internship opportunities with leading local companies. Unique to the campus are the ornamental horticulture teaching gardens, the Solar Energy Center, the Aviation Education Center at Republic Airport, the Institute for Research and Technology Transfer, the Center for Applied Math, and New Media Design, an in-house advertising agency. Farmingdale State is only 50 minutes from New York City, where students can revel in the unique cultural and social environment, and it is only 20 minutes from the beautiful ocean beaches for which Long Island is famous.
Majors and Degrees
There are currently nineteen bachelor's degree programs: aeronautical scienceprofessional pilot, applied mathematics, architectural technology, automative management technology, aviation administration, bioscience, computer engineering technology, computer programming and information systems, construction management technology, dental hygiene, electrical engineering technology, facility management technology, management technology (business administration) with a new concentration in sports management, manufacturing engineering technology, mechanical technology, security systems, technical communication (multimedia), technology studies (liberal arts), and visual communications (graphic design). In addition, ten associate degree programs are offered in automotive engineering technology, business administration, computer science, criminal justicelaw enforcement, dental hygiene, liberal arts and science, mechanical engineering technology, medical laboratory technology, nursing, and ornamental horticulture.
Academic Programs
All programs operate within four schools: Health Sciences, Engineering Technologies, Business, and Arts and Sciences. While graduation requirements vary by program, students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0. The college calendar consists of two semesters, a three-part summer session, and a winter intersession. Farmingdale State is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and all programs are approved by the New York State Department of Education.
Off-Campus Programs
Farmingdale State teaches students success. Graduates are in high demand for their advanced technology skills, real-life experiences, and strong communications skills. Strategic partnerships with many companies result in active recruitment of students for internships and full-time careers. Farmingdale State also focuses on applied research, such as solar energy, fuel cells, medical research, robotics, and manufacturing. Students may have an opportunity to be involved in cutting-edge research with faculty members and industry partners. With the new Broad Hollow Bioscience Park, students have an opportunity to interact with internationally acclaimed scientists.
In addition, there are several opportunities to study abroad and to participate in short-term international travel/study programs, such as art tours of Italy and Greece.
Academic Facilities
Within the campus, there are several buildings of particular note. Greenley Library houses an extensive collection of print and electronic resources. The Broad Hollow Bioscience Park provides internships for students interested in the dynamic biotechnology industry. The Institute for Research and Technology Transfer offers unique opportunities to complete research in fuel-cell development, for example, or working with thermal spray and rapid prototyping technologies. The Center for Advanced Pavement Studies provides leading-edge technology transfer in transportation infrastructure. The Solar Energy Center provides training in residential photovoltaic systems and marketing alternative energy sources to the community. The Long Island Advanced Manufacturing and Applied Engineering Incubator provides students with real-world learning experiences with start-up companies. The 8-acre Ornamental Horticulture Teaching Gardens provide a living laboratory for students and faculty members and were highlighted in House & Garden magazine. The Security Systems Laboratories include four specialized teaching and research labs in access control, closed-circuit television, computer forensics, and intrusion detection. In addition, there are twenty-three other academic buildings, including an on-campus child-care center, a cafeteria, a student union, a bookstore, and a coffee bistro.
Costs
A college education should be worth a fortune, not cost a fortune. Because Farmingdale State is part of the State University of New York system, the college offers a high-quality college education at a very affordable cost. It also offers extensive financial aid for qualified students. For the 200506 academic year, annual costs for full-time attendance at Farmingdale State are $4350 for tuition (plus nominal fees), $8290 for room and board, and about $600 for books and supplies. Tuition for out-of-state students is $10,610.
Financial Aid
Almost 55 percent of Farmingdale State students receive some type of financial aid. Loans, grants, and scholarships are available through various federal, state, and private programs. To apply for financial aid, students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible, but no later than April1.
Financial aid is based on a review of a student's financial circumstances. The FAFSA form should be completed soon after January1. Farmingdale State is dedicated to providing high-quality, personal services to all applicants to assist them in funding their college education. An extensive network of services and resources is offered to help applicants with the financial aid process, and each student is assigned his or her own financial aid adviser. Financial aid advisers help students apply for financial aid and develop financial aid awards tailored to meet college expenses. Scholarships are available.
Faculty
Farmingdale State offers small, personalized classes with dedicated faculty members. The relationships formed between students and professors ensure individual attention. The faculty is composed of more than 170 full-time and 120 part-time faculty members ready to help students grow academically and personally. More than seventy-nine members of the faculty and staff have won Chancellor's Awards for Excellence, including 10 who have been promoted to the rank of Distinguished Teaching/Service Professors. Farmingdale State's faculty represents an outstanding group of individuals dedicated to teaching, research, and scholarship. Farmingdale State offers students a relatively small faculty-student ratio (1:21) in order to maximize the student's individual experience. All classes are taught by faculty members; there are no teaching assistants at Farmingdale State.
Student Government
The Farmingdale Student Government Association (FSG) has authority over all student organizational and elected officers. Sixteen senators and 7 executive board members compose the governing board, which acts in matters promoting the interests of the University and its students.
Admission Requirements
Farmingdale State seeks accomplished students with well-rounded backgrounds and competitive SAT scores. Applicants must have graduated from high school or hold a high school equivalency certificate. The SAT or ACT is required. Decisions are based primarily on grades earned in academic courses. The review process takes into account the applicant's individual overall background, including available data such as test scores, rank in class, and teacher or counselor recommendations. A personal interview is not required. While the school offers rolling admissions, it is highly recommended that applications be submitted by March 1. With more than 7,000 applications a year, Farmingdale State's admissions requirements are increasingly competitive.
