Academic Programs

The academic philosophy of Eastern Michigan University ensures that students are offered a well-rounded education to prepare them for life's challenges and for functioning successfully in an increasingly global and dynamic society. Students take general education courses throughout their time at EMU to enhance the studies in their chosen field. The University offers classes during fall and spring semesters as well as accelerated winter, spring, and summer sessions. Students do not graduate if the GPA in their degree program falls below 2.0. Candidates for a bachelor's degree must earn a total of 124 credits. Students with credits from a junior or community college must earn a minimum of 60 hours from Eastern Michigan University. No more than 60 hours in any one academic department may be applied toward the minimum 124 credit hours needed to graduate. Students who have been in military service are granted credit in military science and leadership.

The Office of Academic Programs Abroad provides opportunities for students to enrich their education by studying abroad through the following programs: the Asian Cultural History Tour, the European Cultural History Tour, and the Japan Center for Michigan Universities. Students may also participate in exchange opportunities with schools in Australia, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Business majors may participate in exchange programs at a college of business in Canada or Mexico.
