In-Depth Description

DALLAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE

DALLAS, TEXAS

The College

Located in the north Dallas suburb of Farmers Branch, Dallas Christian College (DCC) is one of the finest Christian colleges in the area. Graduates of the institution can be found in ministries all across the country and around the globe. Dallas Christian College educates students for Christian leadership in the church, community, and world.

As a Christian college, DCC understands the need for the integration of the Bible into every area of life. All of the courses are taught by professors who have clear biblical principles guiding them both in the classroom and in their personal lives. The College's ultimate goal is to develop Christian leadership in students.

Dallas Christian College is accredited by the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE; formerly the Accrediting Association of Bible Colleges). While the College's primary support base is the Independent Christian Church, DCC is a nondenominational school, with more than a dozen denominations represented in the student body. Dallas Christian College is a small family in a big city. The enrollment is approximately 350 students.

There are a variety of social, athletic, and cultural opportunities available. In terms of intercollegiate sports, Dallas Christian College is a member of the NCCAA. The primary sports offerings are men's and women's basketball, men's soccer, and women's volleyball. There are a variety of intramural opportunities as well. The Student Government offers a number of service and social projects throughout the year.

Campus housing is provided in residence halls built in a suite format. In addition, there is a full-service cafeteria available to all residential and off-campus students.

Students may be involved in many ministry opportunities. Among them are some that are officially recognized by the College. Drama Team is a group of students who travel to church and youth functions with the expressed purpose of teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ through drama. Urban Team is a select group of students who go into the inner city of Dallas and strive for evangelistic excellence and racial harmony. This group of students was recognized by the North American Christian Convention's Urban Task Force as one of the most productive and evangelistic groups in the country. A music group, 4 The One, travels to church and youth functions in order to bring musical presentations.

Location

Farmers Branch, a quiet suburb of Dallas, is close to anything a student might wish to do in the DallasFort Worth metroplex. The campus is just minutes from the downtown cultural district, which includes the Biblical Arts Center, the Meyerson Symphony Center, and the infamous Dallas Book Depository. There are many concerts at Reunion Arena, the Bronco Bowl, and the Dallas Zoo Amphitheater. Major professional sports teams are nearby, including the NFL Dallas Cowboys, the NHL Dallas Stars, the MLB Texas Rangers, the NBA Dallas Mavericks, the PISL Dallas Sidekicks, and the MLS Dallas Burn.

Majors and Degrees

Dallas Christian College's educational programs seek to produce graduates who take leadership in ministry, management, music, and classroom education.

To fulfill institutional goals, the College offers both Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees with double majors. Degrees are offered in Bible and preaching, business administration, Christian education, cross-cultural missions (international and urban), general studies, psychology, teacher education, worship and youth, worship arts, and youth and family ministries. Degrees offered in the Adult Continuing Education Program (Quest) are education and ethics, management and ethics, and ministry and leadership. The degree in ministry and leadership is also available online. All degrees reflect the College's conviction that knowledge of Scripture is basic to education. DCC meets the ABHE requirements of a balanced curriculum in Bible, general education, practical ministries, and specialized studies.

Academic Programs

Dallas Christian College's academic calendar is based on two semesters, each composed of sixteen weeks of classes, including one week of finals. Courses are offered on a credit-hour basis.

Eighteen credit hours are usually considered the maximum load. To complete a bachelor's degree (130 credit hours) in four years, the student should take 16 to 17 credit hours each semester. A class load of 12 credit hours or more constitutes a full-time load; fewer than 12 credit hours constitute a part-time load, with 7 to 11 credit hours considered a -time load for financial aid purposes. Unless the student's program calls for more than 18 credit hours in a semester, special permission to enroll in additional courses beyond this maximum must be secured through the student's adviser and the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Certain courses in which outside assignments are minimal, such as choir and physical education, require additional class time, labs, or practice time for the credit hours awarded.

Those who must work to help meet college expenses should plan to reduce their credit-hour load. It is recommended that students who work more than 12 hours per week reduce their study load 1 credit hour for each 3 hours of self-support work.

Dallas Christian College welcomes a variety of students of all ages to the campus; many students bring a depth of knowledge to specific subjects. The College recognizes and honors such knowledge by accepting the following examinations through which a student may earn credit: the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), and the Advanced Placement (AP) examinations. Assuming that an acceptable grade is attained on an examination, the College grants full degree credit. CLEP, DANTES, and AP credits are accepted for transfer students as well.

Academic Facilities

The C.C. Crawford Memorial Library honors the memory of Dr. Cecil Clement Crawford, who, with Mrs. Helen Crawford, came to Dallas Christian College in August1967. A popular professor during his years at DCC, Dr. Crawford was an honored scholar, educator, preacher, and writer. Before his death in 1976, Dr. Crawford donated his personal library to the College.

The Crawford Memorial Library contains a computer lab with Internet access and 60 online databases. There are approximately 36,000 volumes, 235 printed subscribed periodicals, 3,000 electronic periodicals, and 2,000 audiotapes and videotapes on site. The library can be accessed at http://library.dallas.edu.

Costs

The 200506 cost for tuition is $249 per credit hour. Room and board charges are $2500 per semester. All freshmen are required to live on campus and participate in the meal plan unless they are living at home with parents or a legal guardian in the DallasFort Worth metroplex.

Financial Aid

Dallas Christian College provides a financial aid program to assist students who need additional resources to meet their educational costs. Students who qualify may be eligible for institutional scholarships and grants based on their talent in the areas of academics and music or on their financial need. Students may also qualify for assistance through federal grant, work, or loan programs. Students applying for financial aid must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit an institutional financial aid form to the Financial Aid Office.

Faculty

Small class sizes are combined with a teaching rather than research faculty to ensure students of personal, high-quality instruction. Most classes have less than 25 students. Sixty percent of full-time faculty members either hold or are completing their doctorates; the student-faculty ratio is 10:1. These elements combined translate into excellent teaching and personal attention. Another advantage of DCC's faculty is that professors are practitioners in their fieldsthey come with background and experience from the real world, not just from classroom textbooks. This element offers practical, relevant training for students. Faculty members also serve as advisers and mentors to students. They take a sincere and active role in the personal, academic, and spiritual lives of the students.

Student Government

The Student Government (StuGov) of Dallas Christian College represents all registered students. Officers are chosen annually from within the student body and serve through the Student Council. Voicing the concerns and needs of the students to the College administration and providing opportunities for fun and fellowship are at the core of StuGov.

Admission Requirements

Applicants are evaluated on the basis of academic ability, character, and Christian commitment. Those applying are expected to have a high school diploma or the equivalent with a satisfactory grade point average. Students applying as first-time freshmen or those with fewer than 12 transfer credits should submit the Application for Admission, a high school transcript, SAT or ACT scores, and two letters of recommendation. Students applying for transfer admission should submit the Application for Admission, all college transcripts, and two letters of recommendation.
