CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY
PORTLAND, OREGON
The University
Concordia University (CU), Portland, is a private, four-year Lutheran university dedicated to the intellectual and professional development of the whole student. Founded in 1905 as an academy, Concordia grew from a junior college to a four-year college in the late 1970s, awarding its first bachelor's degrees in 1980 and graduate degrees in 1996. Concordia attained university status in 1995. The institution's mission statement is, Concordia University is a Christian University preparing leaders for the transformation of society.
The University is composed of three academic colleges: the College of Education, the School of Management, and the College of Theology, Arts, and Sciences. Programmatic development through the 1980s and 1990s increased the University's commitment to local and regional needs through several academic additions. These include a nationally recognized health-care administration program, a concentration in e-business within the bachelor's in business administration, and a progressive program emphasis in environmental management. Concordia also launched a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in 2005.
Concordia University further demonstrates its commitment to remain on the cutting edge of program development with its participation in the nationwide Concordia University System. An innovative intercampus partnership of the ten Concordia institutions of The Lutheran ChurchMissouri Synod, the system has a combined enrollment of more than 15,000 students. Opportunities for enrollment in any one of the ten campuses and the benefits of high-tech distance learning and alternative timelines for degree completion are examples of the advantages of a small college within the framework of a nationwide educational system. Through the resource of compressed video, all system campuses are linked to provide academic offerings via a comprehensive telecommunications system. CU's electronic classroom increases educational accessibility and allows students to benefit from the academic expertise at other member institutions.
Concordia graduates meet the professional expectations of the academic, corporate, and church communities by presenting themselves in a focused, experienced, and ethical manner.
Academic focus is provided through the dedication of the University's faculty members, whose primary commitment is teaching and instruction. As educators, faculty members help students reach their full potential; as mentors, they make a conscious attempt to relate to each student's individual needs. Through interaction in and out of the classroom, students develop personal relationships with instructors who are well versed in their area of expertise.
Corporate internships lead directly to employment consideration and human services practicums that provide a supervised learning experience in a community agency, placing students directly in a career path.
Concordia's Lutheran heritage instills within all academic programs an intent to prepare professional leaders with personal attitudes of service and concern. Personal experiences, academic courses, and daily worship opportunities immerse students in a value-centered education grounded in Christian principles.
All students and faculty and staff members are invited to take part in the Christian life of the University. The program is coordinated by students and consists of evening worship opportunities, prayer groups, and small-group Bible studies. Students also serve in the areas of service and spiritual life leadership.
Concordia offers a full range of resources and activities that help to develop the whole student. Academic and professional needs are met through the Career Resource Center, which provides career advising and resume review services. The University's Writing Center assists students in many academic disciplines. Students who seek a residential experience at college can live in one of four residence halls, each providing a special living situation. Varsity student-athletes compete at the NAIA level in men's baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, and track and field and in women's basketball, cross-country, fast-pitch softball, golf, soccer, track and field, and volleyball.
The College of Education offers a Master of Arts in Teaching, a Master of Education in curriculum and instruction, and a Master of Education in administration that is designed to meet the professional needs of certified teachers.
