The College
Chadron State College (CSC) challenges and prepares students to realize academic, personal, and professional success. These successes are developed through experiences in activities on and off campus. Founded in 1911 as Nebraska State Normal School, Chadron State has a proven record of graduates who excel. The professors are approachable and work closely with the students. The total fall 2004 enrollment was 2,569 students. The student body is composed of students from various ethnic and racial backgrounds. The majority of the student population comes from Nebraska, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Colorado; twelve other countries are also represented on the campus. Forty-one percent of the undergraduate students are men.
A combination of academic offerings and faculty expertise enhances the rewards from students' efforts at Chadron State College. Chadron State offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Applied Sciences, and Bachelor of Science in Education programs (four-year degrees) as well as the Master of Arts in Education, Master of Business Administration, Master of Science in Education, and Specialist in Education. The College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Council on Social Work Education, and the Nebraska State Department of Education.
A college campus environment in beautiful northwest Nebraska makes the location a great place to live and study. Tall, pine-covered buttes of a national forest extend across the south end of the campus. In addition, two state parks are within driving distance of the College. Chadron State College has six spacious residence halls, a physical activity center with an indoor track, three versatile basketball/tennis/volleyball courts, a weight-training room, five racquetball courts, and specialized classrooms for dance, cardiovascular exercise, and gymnastics. Chadron State also has a student center, a beautiful fine arts building with two theaters, an educational technology and distance learning center, a three-story library, and a media center. More than sixty-nine campus clubs and organizations, numerous intramural leagues, and ten intercollegiate NCAA Division II athletic teams offer opportunities for involvement and entertainment.
Location
Chadron is a community of approximately 6,000 people. Located at the junction of U.S. Highways 385 and 20, Chadron has a low crime rate. The national forest and state parks surrounding the city of Chadron provide a beautiful recreational aspect to the College. Students enjoy hiking, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, and camping as favorite pastimes. Fort Robinson, 28 miles west, was once a colorful frontier military post. The Hudson-Meng Bison Kill Site, the Agate Fossil Beds, and the Mammoth Site are nearby. Neighboring Cherry County produces more high-grade beef cattle than any other county in this country. The Black Hills of South Dakota are only an hour's drive to the north.
Major airlines have connections into Rapid City, South Dakota, and Scottsbluff, Nebraska; both are within 2 hours of Chadron. A commuter airline connects Denver, Colorado, and Chadron. Bus service is also available in and out of Chadron. Six major fast food businesses and several fine dining restaurants provide numerous dining opportunities. Four theater screens provide movies each night of the week. Many other forms of entertainment can be found in Chadron, as the College brings entertainers and fine arts attractions to the city regularly.
Majors and Degrees
Bachelor of Arts degrees are awarded in applied history/museum studies, art (with options in graphic design and art studio), business administration (with options in accounting, agribusiness, economics, finance, management, management information systems, and marketing), communication arts (with options in public relations, journalism, and communication), English and literature, family and consumer sciences (with options in child development, design and merchandising, hospitality management, and human services), history, industrial management, justice studies (with options in criminal justice and legal studies), library media, music (with options in music performance and commercial music business), psychology (with options in general psychology and substance abuse), recreation, social work, Spanish, and theater.
Bachelor of Science degrees are awarded in biology (with options in environmental studies, general biology, and human biology), chemistry, clinical laboratory science (medical technology), health sciences, information science and technology, mathematics, physical science (with options in chemistry, geoscience, and physics), and range management (with options in rangeland livestock production, and range management).
A Bachelor of Applied Sciences (B.A.S.) degree is now available. This program is designed for individuals who have completed an Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science degree from an accredited technical or community college. The B.A.S. degree is intended to enhance technical learning with general education courses and advanced technical support courses to meet the student's individual career and education goals. Options may be selected in agricultural operations, computers and electronics, health care, industrial trades, or management services.
The Bachelor of Science in Education is offered in art (K12), basic business education, biology, chemistry, earth science, economics, English, English (49), extended health education, family and consumer sciences (49 and 712), health and physical education (712), health education (712), history, industrial technology (712), language arts (712), mathematics (49 and 712), middle grades (49), music (K12) and vocal music (K8), natural science, physical education (K8 and 712), physical science, physics, social science, Spanish, theater, trade and industrial education (1012), and vocational business education.
Academic Programs
Chadron State College has an academic year divided into fall, spring, and summer semesters. Students seeking a baccalaureate degree from Chadron State College must complete the requirements for the program in addition to the general studies requirements. Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in education degrees are granted upon completion of a minimum total of 125 semester hours45 of which must be at the 300 or 400 (junior or senior) level. A grade point average of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale) must be maintained for the Bachelor of Arts programs, and a 2.5 GPA must be maintained for the Bachelor of Science in education programs. No more than 66 credit hours may be transferred or applied toward a baccalaureate degree from a two-year institution.
Students who possess either an A.S. or A.A.S. degree may pursue the Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) degree. Degree requirements for the B.A.S. degree include a minimum of 125 semester credit hours, 45 credit hours of upper-division course work (24 of the last 30 credit hours must be from CSC), 40 semester credit hours of CSC general studies, 36 semester credit hours of upper-division courses to support the student's chosen option, and at least a cumulative GPA of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale). Chadron State College offers alternative options for earning credit. Course work may be supplemented by internships and a cooperative learning program. Travel opportunities for credit during the school year and the summers are available. Independent studies and the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) are available as well.
Off-Campus Programs
Several low-cost tours and field trips are arranged by the College, usually in the spring and summer months. Internships are encouraged for junior and senior students. Summer travel opportunities are developed for which students may receive credit. In the past, tours have gone to Europe, Japan, Canada, Nassau, and Mexico as well as various parts of the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii.
Academic Facilities
The Reta King Library currently contains 211,758 books, 361,172 microform titles, and 730 periodicals. The library provides a computer laboratory, duplicating machines, and microfilm/microfiche readers for student and faculty use. Students also have access to the card catalogs of the two other state colleges in Nebraska and an electronic database with access to 3,500 full-text and 6,000 indexed periodicals. The information highway of the Internet is readily accessible as well. The College has more than 175 terminals, including PCs and Macintosh computers for student use in the computer labs, classrooms, library, and residence halls.
Costs
For the 200405 academic year, the comprehensive cost of tuition, fees, room, and board for Nebraska residents was $7267.20. For nonresident students the cost was $10,117.20. Other expenses such as books, travel, and supplies cost approximately $2820.
Financial Aid
Students seeking financial aid must complete the application for admission to Chadron State College and submit the $15 required application fee. Undergraduate students should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). After receiving the results from the processor, students should forward them to the College Director of Financial Aid. Undergraduate applications for financial assistance provide consideration for the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Work-Study, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal PLUS, and Federal Family Education Loan Programs as well as the State Scholarship Award Program and Student Assistance Program. A monthly payment plan is available through the Business Office. CSC provides electronic FAFSA processing.
Faculty
The College currently has a teaching faculty of 118 members (97 full-time, 70 percent of whom have terminal degrees). Ninety-nine percent of the faculty members advise undergraduate students. Each faculty member is involved in student activities. The vast majority of the undergraduate classes are taught by faculty members. The studentundergraduate faculty ratio of 19:1 allows close relationships between faculty members and students.
Student Government
A large number of students are actively involved in the student government. Numerous committees and organizations, including Student Senate, make an impact on the College. Students take part in decisions concerning scholastic, collegiate, intellectual, recreation, social, and cultural activities on and off campus.
Admission Requirements
Chadron State College welcomes inquiries regarding the College's programs and admission requirements. The College has an open admission policy for all students. To ensure a more successful college career, Chadron State recommends that a student pursue the following courses in high school: 4 units of English; 3 units of mathematics; 3 units of social studies, including 1 unit of American history and 1 unit of global studies; 2 units of laboratory science; and other academic courses selected from areas such as foreign language, visual or performing arts, and computer literacy. Applications for admission should be submitted by currently enrolled high school students between the beginning of their last year and one month prior to the beginning of the term for which they seek admission. Individuals who have completed high school should submit their application materials at least one month prior to the beginning of the term for which they wish to be admitted.
Application and Information
Freshman applicants should submit a completed application for admission; a $15 application fee; an official high school transcript reflecting a graduation date, class rank, and overall grade point average; and an official ACT or SAT score report sent from the testing headquarters. Scores from the ACT/SAT are not required for students who graduated from high school five or more years prior to enrollment at Chadron State. All students must provide a physician-validated immunization record.
Transfer applicants should submit a completed application for admission, a $15 application fee, a physician-validated immunization record, and official transcripts from all colleges or universities previously attended. If the student has attempted fewer than 12 semester hours of credit, he or she must also submit an official high school transcript and ACT or SAT scores. Campus visits are encouraged.
