In-Depth Description

CARTHAGE COLLEGE

Kenosha, Wisconsin

The College

Carthage is a four-year private college of the arts and sciences, committed to educating students in the liberal arts tradition. Founded in 1847, Carthage is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The College prepares its students for the challenges and complexities of life in the modern world.

Carthage's 2,063 full-time students come from all parts of the world, representing twenty-five states and fourteen other countries.

With an average class size of 19 students and a student-faculty ratio of 17:1, the College offers a nurturing, personal education in a way that most large universities cannot. Faculty members come from the top graduate schools in their fields and are selected for their commitment to undergraduate teaching and research.

Carthage is primarily a residential campus, and life in the residence halls is an important component of the Carthage learning experience. All five residence halls have free cable television and free T-1 Internet access in addition to outside phone lines. A new apartment-style residence village with private baths, single rooms, and common areas with flat screen televisions will be available beginning fall 2006.

Complementing the academic and residence-life programs is a wide range of extracurricular activities. There are more than eighty-five clubs and organizations, including social sororities and fraternities; fine arts performance groups; campus publications and media; social service organizations; student government; honorary, professional, and departmental organizations; religious life groups; and general interest organizations. In athletics, the College offers twenty-two intercollegiate teams that compete in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW), one of the top NCAA Division III conferences in the U.S. Men's sports include baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Women's sports include basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, water polo, and volleyball. Club sports are offered in women's bowling and coed ice hockey. Intramural and recreational activities are also available. The N.E. Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center opened in June2001. This $23-million, 156,0000-square-foot facility features a 40-meter, sixteen-lane swimming pool; a six-lane, 200-meter indoor running track with multipurpose courts for basketball, volleyball, and tennis; a 5,000-square-foot fitness center; a climbing wall; an aerobics area; and racquetball courts.

Carthage is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and holds a variety of professional recognitions, including accreditation of its chemistry program by the American Chemical Society, its music program by the National Association of Schools of Music, its social work program by the Council on Social Work Education, and its business program by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education.

In addition to its undergraduate programs, the College offers a Master in Education degree with concentrations in classroom guidance and counseling, creative arts, language arts, natural science, reading, religion, and social science. In conjunction with Loyola University Chicago, Carthage also offers an executive M.B.A. degree and a master's degree in social work.

Some of the course requirement areas are three freshman and sophomore heritage seminars, which emphasize critical thinking, reasoning, writing, speaking, and listening skills through cultural and international studies; one course each in social science, humanities, mathematics, and fine arts; two courses each in religion and modern language; a Junior Symposium, which consists of three linked courses from multiple disciplines; and a senior thesis. A nationally recognized honors program gives outstanding students special opportunities for growth and learning throughout their four years at Carthage.

Carthage operates on a 4-1-4 academic calendar consisting of fall and spring terms separated by a January term. The January term provides opportunities for independent study, special course work, internships, travel for credit, and traditional courses. A summer pre-session and full summer term are also available but not required.

Off-Campus Programs

Carthage maintains several cooperative programs with other institutions, including a 3-2 program in occupational therapy with Washington University in St. Louis and 3-2 programs in engineering with the University of WisconsinMadison; University of Minnesota, Twin Cities; and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. A one-year exchange program for students interested in learning more about Japanese language/culture allows up to 3 students from Carthage to enroll at Tokyo-Gakugei University in Tokyo, Japan. In turn, Tokyo-Gakugei University may send up to 3 of their qualified students to study at Carthage each year. Air Force ROTC and Army ROTC are offered in cooperation with Marquette University in Milwaukee. Carthage students are able to secure internships with both large and small companies, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations. Combining hands-on learning with their classroom instruction, recent students have interned at a variety of places, including the Cincinnati Reds, SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission), Wisconsin State Crime Lab, Jockey International, and Kraft Foods. In addition, the College has an active study-abroad program that enables students to travel to various countries for month-, semester- or year-abroad studies.

Academic Facilities

Lentz Hall houses multimedia and traditional classrooms, the bookstore, and administrative and faculty offices. The recently renovated David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Natural and Social Sciences includes the 400-seat Wartburg Auditorium, state-of-the-art undergraduate research laboratories, and multimedia and traditional classrooms, and it is home to the A. W. Clausen Center for World Business and Starbucks coffee shop. The Johnson Art Center provides spacious art studios and individual and group music rehearsal studios. Above the Johnson Art Center is the 1,800-seat Siebert Chapel, the College's premier chamber music venue. The crown jewel of academic life on campus is Hedberg Library. Opened in January2002, the $15-million, 65,000-square-foot library features electronic classrooms, videoconferencing capabilities, a media and technology AV production/presentation suite, off-campus access to reference databases, and an Einstein Bros./Freshens store located inside a 24-hour cyber-caf. The library blends its 125,000-volume collection with extensive electronic resources including both wireless and wired computer access to the campus network and the Internet. The Hedberg Library was recognized as Library of the Year in 2004 by the Wisconsin Library Association. Easily accessible to students, academic resources and support services designed to help every student reach his or her academic potential are strategically located in one of the residence halls. Comprehensive academic counseling services are also provided to all students by full-time professionals in the Advising Center and by faculty advisers. Each freshman is assigned to an adviser who is also available for counseling in all areas of college life.

Costs

In addition, Carthage awards more than twenty-five major scholarships per year through various scholarship competitions.

Faculty

More than 85 percent of the full-time faculty members hold a Ph.D. or other terminal degree. Their credentials include degrees from a broad range of highly respected graduate schools, and they are valued for their commitment to teaching.
