The College and Its Mission

Bay State College, a private, two-year, independent, coeducational institution, is located in Boston's historic Back Bay. Since 1946, Bay State College has been preparing young men and women with the skills necessary to attain outstanding careers in the business and allied health disciplines.

The College's goal is to prepare and educate students for successful and rewarding professional opportunities. Bay State College accomplishes this by providing the best possible education, which enables students to go out into the working world equipped with all the skills needed to succeed professionally or to transfer to a four-year college of choice. Bay State College assists, encourages, supports, and educates students in all their academic, professional, and personal goals and aspirations.

Bay State College is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, is authorized to award the Associate in Science and Associate in Applied Science degrees by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and is a member of several professional educational associations.

Bay State College's allied health programs are accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). The Physical Therapist Assistant Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).

Academic Programs

Bay State College offers unique courses preparing students for careers in accounting, business, criminal justice, early childhood education, fashion design, fashion merchandising, general studies, medical assisting studies, and physical therapist assistant studies. In addition, students are exceptionally prepared to transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

The College's current programs include accounting (A.A.S.), business administration (A.A.S.), early childhood education (A.S.), entertainment management (A.A.S.), fashion design (A.S.), fashion merchandising (A.A.S.), general studies (A.S.), medical assisting studies (A.S.), physical therapist assistant studies (A.S.), retail business management (A.A.S.), and travel and hospitality management (A.A.S.).

In addition, Bay State is now offering three baccalaureate degrees in entertainment management, fashion merchandising, and management.

Bay State College's Day and Continuing Education Divisions offer day and evening classes. Two satellite campuses for continuing education are located in Gloucester and Middleborough, Massachusetts.

Off-Campus Programs

The internship program, available in all major areas of study, provides practical field experience so that the students gain the skills and experience with the technologies used in the business and medical settings.

Students from Bay State College are among the 250 students participating in the Walt Disney World College Program. During their stay at Walt Disney World, students receive on-the-job training and classroom experience. This is just one of the many internship possibilities for students each year at Bay State College.

Costs

For the 200405 academic year, the College's Day Division charged a comprehensive fee of $24,400, which included full-time tuition ($14,900) and room and board ($9500). There is an allied health lab fee of $475 per year (medical assisting studies and physical therapist assistant studies only). Textbooks are estimated at $600 per year. Bay State College's Continuing Education Division, the Boston, Middleborough, and Gloucester campuses, charged $220 per credit. Tuition, dormitory charges, and fees are subject to change.

Financial Aid

Personal financial planning and counseling is completed with all students and families. Approximately 85 percent of students receive some form of financial assistance. Bay State College requires a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form and signed federal tax forms. The College's institutional financial aid priority deadline is March1. Financial aid is granted on a rolling basis.

Faculty

There are 50 faculty members, with 53 percent holding advanced degrees and 6 percent holding doctoral degrees. The student-faculty ratio is 15:1.

Student Body Profile

There are 567 students in terminal programs. The average age is 18. The student body is ethnically and culturally diverse; 85 percent are state residents, 9 percent are transfer students, 4 percent are international students, 60 percent are women, 19 percent are African American, 11 percent are Hispanic, and 10 percent are Asian American. In the past year, 33 percent of Bay State College's graduating class continued on to a four-year college.

Bay State College's residence halls are located on Commonwealth Avenue. There are 174 college housing spaces available. Each residence hall is designed to accommodate from 1 to 5 students per room. Housing is guaranteed to freshmen who complete and submit a dorm contract by May 1.

Each hall is staffed by professional live-in directors and a paraprofessional staff of resident assistants. The staff members strive to foster a living and learning environment that complements the academic mission. All residents have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of programs such as in-house educational, cultural, and awareness seminars; study breaks; discounts to area movies and theater productions; and holiday celebrations. Twenty-four-hour quiet hours are in effect during midterm and final periods. A campus dining facility is available, as are microwaves, laundry facilities, cable-ready outlets, and computer labs.

Student Activities

Students participate in a multitude of activities offered by the College through student groups. These include the Travel Club, Fashion Club, Early Childhood Education Club, Accounting Club, Student Leader Organization, Medical Assisting Society, Physical Therapist Assistant Club, a talent show, a student-produced fashion show, a literary magazine, literary readings, and access to a gym.

Facilities and Resources

Advisement/CounselingTrained staff members assist students in selecting courses and programs of study to satisfy their educational objectives. A counseling center is available to provide mental and physical health referrals to all Bay State students in need of such services. Referral networks are extensive, within a wide range of geographic areas, and provide access to a variety of public and private health agencies.

Specialized ServicesThe Learning Center has been renamed the Center for Learning and Academic Support (CLAS). A learning center serves as a supplementary learning tool for those individuals wishing to improve their skills through self-paced individualized instruction. The center offers assistance through the use of peer and faculty tutors, individualized learning packets, and audio, visual, and other self-study resources. Introductory studies courses are designed for a diverse population of students, including workers returning to school, recent high school graduates seeking academic reinforcement, and ESL students. Their individual needs are met so they can be successful in the traditional course of study leading to an associate degree.

Career Planning/PlacementOf the number of students seeking assistance from the Career Services Office, there was a 95 percent job placement rate. The primary purpose of the Career Services Office at Bay State College is to see that every graduating senior secures the best possible position in his or her chosen career. The Career Services Office, offering lifelong service to all alumni, continually posts job openings for current students and graduates. An average of 10,000 job openings are posted every year. The Career Services Office, under the guidance of Mr. Timothy Mosehauer, Assistant Director of Student Career Services (telephone: 617-236-8030), assists each student through one-on-one career counseling. Services include career fairs on campus, with more than seventy attending companies; resume preparation; career counseling; the career library; and a professional dynamics course.

Library and Audiovisual ServicesThe library has a combined book collection of approximately 5,300 books. In addition, Bay State College has 100 periodicals and 200 audiovisual titles. The College's sixty computers have access to the Internet and several databases for magazine and journal articles, including ProQuest, LexisNexis Academic, and Westlaw legal database.

Location

The location of Bay State College makes it the perfect place to attend to get a complete education. While the academics are great, students are also within a mile of major-league sports, free concerts, museums, the Freedom Trail, Boston Symphony Hall, the Boston Public Library, the Boston Public Garden, and much more. The city is known for its college atmosphere. Tree-lined streets are mirrored in the skyscrapers of the Back Bay. Major shopping, cultural, and sporting events make College life an experience that students will always remember. The College's location is accessible by public transportation and in proximity to Boston Logan International Airport.

Admission Requirements

Students must be in pursuit of a high school diploma or GED certificate in order to apply and must receive it before the start of classes at Bay State College. A personal interview is strongly recommended for all students. Transcripts are requested once a student has applied. A decision is made by the Admissions Office upon completion and receipt of all documents. International students must complete an International Student Application and provide a transcript, a TOEFL score, and final documents in order to be considered for admission.

Application and Information

Bay State College accepts applications on a rolling basis, so students may apply at any time. A $25 fee is required at the time of application, but application fee waivers are available upon request.
