In-Depth Description

BARTON COLLEGE

Wilson, North Carolina

The College

Founded in 1902 as the first degree-granting institution in eastern North Carolina, Barton College opened its doors to 107 students with one building on 5 acres of campus. Today, Barton welcomes approximately 1,300 students from thirty states and eighteen countries to a campus of twenty-six buildings on 65 acres.

The College offers several avenues of assistance for students, especially during the freshman year, including an innovative freshman advising program designed to assist students in making the transition from home and high school to college and residence hall life. All freshmen meet with their adviser three times a week in a classroom seminar setting. Outside the classroom experience, the First-Year Seminar program also offers exposure to a variety of cultural and social events, including concerts, lectures, art exhibits, drama productions, and sports events. Inside the classroom, Barton's student-centered core curriculum enhances academic success and provides students with an outstanding foundation from which the total liberal arts experience is achieved.

Barton's Student Development Program includes residence life programs, special activities, and counseling services that provide for the students' cultural, social, and emotional development. In addition, Barton has approximately thirty clubs and organizations in which students can be involved, including academic organizations, specialty clubs, fraternities, and sororities. Another vital component of student life is the Career Services Center. The center provides a vigorous on-campus recruiting program that brings approximately 100 recruiters to Barton's campus annually, representing corporations, government, and educational areas. In addition, several hundred other employers seek to hire Barton students each year. Barton's graduates rank exceptionally well in obtaining employment in their chosen field of study, and their salaries are competitive with those of students from other North Carolina colleges and universities.

On-campus housing is provided in five residence halls: East Campus Suites, Hilley, Hackney, Waters, and Wenger. All five facilities feature cable television and information technology access in each room. East Campus Suites is Barton's new residence hall for juniors and seniors and offers additional amenities and more independence.

Offering a strong, competitive sports program, Barton College's Bulldogs compete in the NCAA Division II and the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference. The intercollegiate sports program includes women's basketball, cross-country, fast-pitch softball, soccer, tennis, and volleyball and men's baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, and tennis. A wide variety of intramural sports are offered to the entire campus community. All students and especially those involved in Barton's intramural, physical education, and athletic programs benefit from the Kennedy Recreation and Intramural Center that features an indoor swimming pool, walking/jogging areas, an auxiliary gym, and a weight/fitness room. Barton also has a twelve-court tennis complex to add to its outstanding facilities package.

The beautiful Atlantic coast of North Carolina is 100 miles from the campus, and the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains are easily accessible. Located on Interstate 95, Wilson is also accessible by U.S. Routes 264, 117, and 301 and North Carolina Routes 42 and 58. Wilson is 1 hour from Raleigh/Durham International Airport. Academic Programs

The major areas of study have a global focus, so students are assured of a high-quality academic program. Expanded travel opportunities and concentrated study are enhanced by Barton's 4-1-4 semester system featuring the January Term. Barton College offers a strong liberal arts tradition, and students follow a core curriculum during their freshman and sophomore years. Through a carefully guided advising program they declare a major area of study at the end of their freshman year or at the beginning of their sophomore year. At that point, they begin an intense and challenging program of study in their chosen field while completing general college requirements.

Barton College's athletic training education, nursing, education, and social work programs are nationally accredited programs. The School of Business majors continue to be popular areas of study. Barton is one of the few colleges on the East Coast to offer a program for the education of the deaf and the hard of hearing. Also unique is the recording technology program, which features a 32-track digital recording studio. The School of Behavioral Sciences offers a social work degree program, gerontology and psychology majors, and a criminal justice and criminology major with law enforcement certification available to students choosing that track.

Off-Campus Programs

Each year students participate in faculty-led trips to different areas of the world. Students recognize this travel as an excellent opportunity to enrich their college experience. Depending on the nature and destination of the travel, students may obtain college credit for their participation. Barton also has exchange agreements with colleges in Europe and Asia for extended overseas study offered in conjunction with the Global Focus international emphasis.

Financial Aid

The objective of the financial aid program at Barton College is to provide financial assistance to qualified students who would not otherwise be able to begin or continue their college education. Financial aid is awarded on the basis of need. (Financial need exists when the total cost of education exceeds the amount of money a student and family can reasonably make available from income and assets.) Barton College requires that all applicants for financial aid complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as a means of determining financial need. Approximately 84 percent of Barton students receive financial aid. Aid comes from federal, state, and institutional resources and may be awarded as scholarships, grants, loans, or work-study. In addition, many students apply for part-time jobs on campus or in the community through the Career Services Center.

Students are encouraged to apply early for financial aid and should have their completed application in the Financial Aid Office by June1 in order to ensure receipt of awards by the beginning of the fall semester. Every effort is made to process completed applications received after this date; however, earlier applications receive top priority in the awards process.

Faculty

Faculty members at Barton College recognize the importance of personalized attention for the students' learning experience. Because of the 12:1 student-faculty ratio, professors at Barton are able to teach small classes and have the opportunity to meet and to get to know their students as individuals. Barton has 79 full-time faculty members. Approximately 55 percent of the full-time faculty members have obtained the highest degree available in their field.

The Student Government Association (SGA) of Barton College provides students with opportunities to express themselves on issues of concern. Student government also provides a setting for studying the democratic process. The officers of the SGA are elected by the members of the student body, and the president of the SGA serves as an ex officio member of the College Board of Trustees.
