U.S. News & World Report ranks Barry University number one for diversity among Southern Regional Colleges and Universities. Total enrollment is 9,207 (undergraduate, graduate, and adult and continuing education), which includes students from forty-nine states and eighty countries. Just a few more than 3,200 full-time undergraduate students are enrolled at Barry.
More than seventy undergraduate majors, more than fifty graduate programs, and several accelerated adult degree programs are offered through the Schools of Adult and Continuing Education, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Graduate Medical Sciences, Human Performance and Leisure Sciences, Law, Natural and Health Sciences, Nursing, and Social Work. There are twenty honor societies, and a number of nationally recognized scholars present throughout the year. In many areas, students have the opportunity to work closely with faculty members on research projects.

The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097; telephone: 404-679-4501) to award bachelor's, master's, specialist, and doctoral degrees. Barry also holds a number of accreditations from professional organizations for specific programs.
Barry's beautifully landscaped campus and Spanish-style architecture offer the perfect environment for quiet reflection and study. Nine air-conditioned residence halls on campus and extended housing off campus accommodate residential undergraduate students. All students may keep cars on campus. Barry also has a Department of Commuter Affairs that serves as a resource center for commuters.
Student services available on campus include a Department of First-year Programs, an orientation team and peer assistants, counseling, career development and placement, campus ministry, and health services. The University has a snack bar, a cafeteria, a post office, a new student union center, a bookstore, a performing arts center, a television studio, a radio station, a game room, a health and sports center (complete with a strength and conditioning room), and an outdoor recreation center. There are eighty-nine student organizations and a number of campuswide events.
Barry University fields twelve intercollegiate athletic teams that participate in the NCAA Division II and in the Sunshine State Conference. Since 1984, the Buccaneers have won six national championships, participated in seventy-nine national tournaments, and won thirty SSC championships. Nearly 60 percent of Barry's student-athletes achieve GPAs above 3.0. Intramural sports include basketball, flag football, 4-on-4 flag football, golf, sand volleyball, soccer, street hockey, tennis, 3-on-3 basketball, and volleyball.
Location
Miami Shores is located between the cities of Miami and Fort Lauderdale, giving students access to all the recreational facilities and cultural opportunities of South Florida. Golf, tennis, swimming, soccer, scuba and skin diving, waterskiing, and sailing are available all year long. Miami also offers football's Miami Dolphins; its NBA team, the Miami Heat; its National League baseball team, the Florida Marlins; and its NHL team, the Florida Panthers. The New World Symphony, the Opera Guild of Greater Miami, the Miami Film Festival, and the Miami City Ballet provide a full season of highly acclaimed performances, as do the Coconut Grove Playhouse and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Well-known personalities entertain regularly in the area. Also easily accessible are the Florida Keys, the Everglades, national parks, and marine and state parks.

Barry University offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in advertising, art (ceramics, graphic design, and painting and drawing), broadcast communication, communication studies, English (literature and professional writing), environmental studies, French, general studies, history, international studies, philosophy, photography (biomedical/forensic, creative, digital imaging, and photo/communication), prelaw, public relations, Spanish, theater (acting, design/technical), and theology.
The Bachelor of Science degree is offered in accounting, athletic training (premedicine option and prephysical therapy five-year seamless B.S. to M.S.), biology (biotechnology, ecological studies track, major for the medical laboratory technician, histotechnology track, marine biology track, predentistry, premedicine, preoptometry, prepharmacy, prephysical therapy, prephysician assistant studies, prepodiatry, preveterinary medicine, and three-year accelerated option), cardiovascular perfusion, chemistry (environmental track, predentistry, premedicine, and prepharmacy), computer information sciences, computer science, criminology, cytotechnology, diagnostic medical ultrasound technology, e-commerce, economics, finance, elementary education, pre-engineering, environmental science, exceptional student education, exercise science (premedicine option, prephysical therapy five-year seamless B.S. to M.S.), international business, management, management information systems, marketing, mathematical sciences (actuarial science, applied, and computational), medical technology, nuclear medicine technology, physical education (grades K8 and 612), political science, preK through primary education, preK through primary education (Montessori), psychology, sociology, and sport management (diving industry and golf industry tracks).
The University also offers the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (accelerated option, accelerated B.S.N. to M.S.N. option, basic option, LPN to B.S.N. option, RN to B.S.N. option, RN/B.S. to M.S.N. option, seamless RN to M.S.N. option, three-year option, and two-year option).
The Bachelor of Fine Arts, the Bachelor of Music, and the Bachelor of Social Work are also offered.
Minor concentrations are available in specific subject areas as well as in the interdisciplinary areas of Africana studies, film studies, peace studies, sacred music, and women's studies.
Teaching certification is available for pre-K through primary education, elementary education, exceptional student education, and physical education. A certificate program in the translation and interpretation of Spanish is offered.
Seven accelerated undergraduate degree programs are offered for working adults through Barry's evening and weekend programs.
Academic Programs
The University operates on a semester plan. The first semester extends from the end of August to mid-December, and the second semester extends from mid-January to early May. Two 6-week sessions are offered during the summer. Students must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 (or C) and earn a minimum of 120 credits for a degree. Of these 120 credits, 9 must be in philosophy and theology, 9 in communicationoral and written, 9 in humanities and arts, 9 in physical or natural sciences and mathematics, and 9 in social and behavioral sciences. The traditional full-time academic load is 12 to 18 credits each semester and 6 credits each summer term. Candidates for degree programs may elect either a major area of specialization or a broad liberal arts program and must satisfy all requirements of the program that they choose to follow, including all professional preparation requirements. Exceptionally well-qualified seniors may earn up to 6 hours of graduate credit with the recommendation of the department chairperson and the dean. Internships are required for many majors.
An ELS Language Centers program is available to international students needing to increase language proficiency. The Clinical Center for Advanced Learning offers a program designed to assist students with learning disabilities who have the intellectual potential and motivation to complete a four-year degree.
The University also offers an active honors program designed to add breadth and depth to the educational experience. The approach is interdisciplinary.
Off-Campus Programs
Barry University offers summer programs in Europe. In addition, Barry is a member of the College Consortium for International Studies, enabling students to participate in programs in twenty-five countries offered by member colleges and universities. Barry University students may enroll in Air Force ROTC courses through cross-registration at a nearby university.
Academic Facilities
Students find the high-quality resources they need to support their education at Barry. Campus facilities include the Monsignor William Barry Library, an extensive library network, photography and digital imaging labs, a human performance lab, athletic training room, a biomechanics lab, a complete television production studio, academic computing center, multimedia business classrooms, art studios, a performing arts center, a nursing lab, the Classroom of Tomorrow, and a cell biology lab as well as several other well-equipped science labs.
Costs
For 200405, tuition for full-time undergraduate students for the academic year was $21,350. Student services fees are included in tuition. Room and board costs averaged $7400 (double room). Expenses such as books, supplies, laboratory or other special fees, and transportation are not included in these costs.
Financial Aid
Barry University offers an excellent scholarship and grant program, awarding scholarships each year to students who have demonstrated academic success and promise. These scholarships and grants may be renewed for up to four years as long as the students meet the renewal criteria. Barry need-based grants and athletic scholarships are also available.
Barry also participates in the Federal Pell and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant programs, the Federal Perkins Loan Program, the Federal Work-Study Program, the Florida Resident Access Grant Program, the Florida Student Assistance Grant, Florida Bright Futures Scholarships, and the Federal Family Educational Loan Program. Barry awards financial assistance on the basis of financial need and academic excellence. Applicants must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to be considered for aid. Ninety percent of full-time undergraduate students receive assistance from the University. Faculty
Faculty members are easily accessible to students and are committed to providing individualized attention. The undergraduate faculty members of the Schools of Adult and Continuing Education, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Human Performance and Leisure Sciences, Natural and Health Sciences, Nursing, and Social Work participate in a dynamic academic advisement program. Doctorates are held by 81 percent of the faculty members, and the student-faculty ratio is 14:1.
Student Government
The Student Government Association serves as a liaison between the student body and the administration and faculty. All undergraduate students are members of the association, which is governed by an Executive Board that consists of 4 members and the Senate, which consists of 7 elected representatives. Six members are elected during the spring semester, and the remaining position (Freshman Senator) is filled early in the fall semester. Unless otherwise specified, meetings of the Senate are open, and students are invited and encouraged to attend the weekly sessions.

In reviewing the credentials of students seeking admission to Barry University, admissions considers an applicant's composite efforts. Candidates must present the following credentials: the completed application form,y official high school or college transcripts, and the results of the SAT I or of the ACT.
