The University
Founded in 1928, Angelo State University (ASU) has been recognized as one of the United States' outstanding regional public universities. A proud member of the Texas State University System, ASU provides a genuine value, maintaining one of the lowest tuition and fee schedules in the state. One of the University's major goals is to create a stimulating educational climate that offers students maximum opportunities for academic achievement and personal growth both in and out of the classroom. With personal attention from a superb faculty and with numerous prospects for practical experience and internships, students enjoy an enhanced undergraduate experience. To achieve this goal, ASU maintains a distinguished student body and a superb faculty. Of the approximately 6,000 students enrolled, 5,600 are undergraduates. This diverse student population is drawn from throughout Texas, thirty-nine other states, and twenty-three countries.
Location
The 268-acre campus of Angelo State University is in San Angelo, an attractive and progressive community of 100,000 in the heart of Texas at the gateway to the scenic hill country. The attractively landscaped campus is convenient to downtown as well as to entertainment options in suburban areas. The athletic, cultural, and entertainment offerings of the campus are complemented by those of the community, including a symphony orchestra, art and historical museums, popular concerts, three professional sports teams, and a host of special events. The ASU Lake House on Lake Nasworthy, one of three recreational lakes around San Angelo, provides facilities for various university functions as well as picnicking, swimming, fishing, and other water activities.
Majors and Degrees
Angelo State University provides forty-one undergraduate programs leading to seven baccalaureate degrees and one associate degree.
The Bachelor of Arts degree is offered in art, communication, criminal justice, drama, English, French, German, government, history, journalism, mathematics, music, psychology, sociology, and Spanish. Programs for teacher certification at the elementary level are available as interdisciplinary programs in fine arts, language arts, and social studies. Programs for teacher certification are available in communication, drama, English language arts and reading, fine arts, French, special education, German, history, journalism, social studies, and Spanish.
The Bachelor of Business Administration degree may be earned in accounting, business, computer science, finance, finance with a financial planning option, finance with a real estate option, international business, management, management information systems, and marketing. The University's undergraduate and graduate business programs are accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs. A five-year integrated undergraduate/graduate program in accounting is designed to fulfill state requirements for eligibility for the Certified Public Accountancy (CPA) examination.
The Bachelor of Music degree is offered in music, and the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree is offered in studio art. A program in teacher certification in music is available.
The Bachelor of Science degree is offered in animal science, applied physics, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, computer science, criminal justice, kinesiology, mathematics, medical technology, physics, psychology, and sociology. Programs for teacher certification are available as interdisciplinary programs in early childhood, math/science, and special learning and development and in the content areas of computer science, kinesiology, life science, mathematics, and physical science.
The University also offers a Bachelor of General Studies degree, Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, and an Associate in Applied Science in Nursing degree.
In addition, students may pursue courses and advising designed to help them meet entrance requirements to various professional schools, including dentistry, engineering, law, medicine, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, and veterinary medicine.
Academic Programs
The academic requirements at ASU are designed to give the student a broad background in the liberal arts and to enhance that foundation with discipline-specific courses. Curricula are continually evaluated to ensure the best and most current educational experience possible. Baccalaureate-seeking students must file a degree plan prior to the first semester of their junior year or the completion of 70 semester hours. Faculty advisers monitor students' progress from the beginning of the academic program until completion.
Two-year and four-year aerospace studies programs for men and women are also available. Completion of these programs leads to a commission in the U.S. Air Force. ASU has one of the nations most highly decorated detachments and can offer tremendous scholarships.
The college year consists of a long session and a summer session. The long session is divided into fall and spring semesters, each approximately 16 weeks long. The summer session is divided into two 6-week terms.
Off-Campus Programs
The International Studies Program provides academic study and travel opportunities in Mexico and Europe. Study-abroad programs carry college credit. Other off-campus programs include professional internships in education, government, journalism, and public administration and cooperative education programs in nursing and medical technology offered in conjunction with numerous local medical centers.
ASU operates a 4,643-acre multiple-purpose agricultural production and wildlife management area called the Management, Instruction, and Research (MIR) Center. Located near O.C. Fisher Lake and San Angelo, the MIR Center is one of the most complete domestic livestock and range and wildlife management facilities in the Southwest.
Academic Facilities
Attractive and well-maintained academic buildings enable ASU students to study in some of the most pleasant and modern facilities anywhere. Classrooms range from the intimacy of seminar-oriented size to a small number of lecture halls. Specialized and general research laboratories serve many of the University's programs, including the applied sciences, nursing, communication, journalism, kinesiology, education, business, and computer science, among others. The Porter Henderson Library is the focal point of academic life at ASU. Containing more than 1 million holdings in bound volumes, government documents, and microforms accessible by an online cataloging system, the Henderson Library ranks among the finest libraries in Texas. The West Texas Collection of archival material admirably meets the genealogical and historical interests of students and faculty members desiring to learn more about the distinct West Texas heritage.
There are seven computer labs on campus that are available to all students. One of these labs is open 24 hours a day during the week. The 16:1 student-to-computer ratio is extremely low. A radio/television studio, modular and proscenium theaters, a planetarium, musical rehearsal and recital halls, art studios, recreational facilities, and a Language Learning Center provide ASU students with exceptional opportunities for learning and fun outside the classroom. An extensive network of student-accessible microcomputer laboratories further complements the academic mission of the computer-intensive campus.
Costs
In 2004-05, state residents registered for a normal course load of 12 semester hours (full-time study) paid $1550 per semester for required tuition and fees. Room and board averaged $2445 per semester, depending upon the meal plans and residence hall selected. Tuition and required fees for out-of-state students were $4650 per semester. Books and supplies are estimated to cost about $400 per semester.
Financial Aid
To assist students toward meeting their financial responsibilities, the Office of Student Financial Aid administers a wide variety of programs from funds provided by the federal government and the state of Texas, including funds from the Federal Work-Study, Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Family Education Loan, Texas Public Educational Grant, and State Student Incentive Grant programs. In addition, numerous scholarships are awarded annually through the financial aid office in recognition of academic achievement, outstanding leadership, and exceptional promise or potential.
One of the most distinctive features of the University is the Robert G. Carr and Nona K. Carr Academic Scholarship Program. One of the largest privately endowed academic scholarship programs in the nation, this program provides scholarships ranging in value from $2000 to $6000 annually. Approximately 1,000 students enrolled at Angelo State University receive these awards. To compete favorably for one of these renewable scholarships, a student must normally rank in the top 15 percent of his or her class and present a composite score of 25 or higher on the ACT Assessment or a combined math and verbal score of 1140 or higher on the SAT I.
Students interested in the University's Air Force ROTC program may also apply for scholarships awarded through the Air Force ROTC detachment. These awards are funded by an endowment established by the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert G. Carr. This unique program provides scholarships ranging in value from $500 to $1500 annually to qualified cadets enrolled in the University's ROTC program.
Faculty
Angelo State University retains a distinguished faculty. In terms of academic preparation, the faculty ranks near the top of all colleges and universities in the South. Approximately 60 percent of the faculty hold earned doctorates in their teaching field. Faculty members are selected with great care; the University seeks to obtain the services of individuals who are prominent scholars and dedicated teachers who will merit the confidence of the students. Faculty members are associated with many of the nation's leading research universities, conduct special assignments in numerous countries, have acquired professional experience with some of the nation's leading business firms, conduct extensive applied and theoretical research, and travel internationally.
Student Government
The Student Senate is the official representative organization of the Angelo State University student body. As the primary forum for student opinion, the Student Senate provides a mutually beneficial communication link between the student body and administrative officials.
Admission Requirements
High school graduates are admitted to Angelo State University on a competitive basis. Applicants from accredited U.S. high schools must meet one of the following requirements: (1) they must satisfactorily complete the Texas Scholars Program or the Texas advanced high school program; (2) they must rank in the top half of their senior class at the time of application or graduate in the top half of their graduating class; (3) they must present a minimum composite score of 23 on the ACT Assessment or a minimum combined verbal and math score of 1030 on the SAT I if ranked in the third quarter or of 30 or 1270 if ranked in the fourth quarter; or (4) they must have a 50 percent or greater probability of earning an overall C average (2.0 GPA) during the freshman year at the University as computed from their high school grades and ACT or SAT I scores. Students who do not qualify for regular admission may qualify for provisional admission. Transfer students who have completed 18 or more hours of college-level work will be admitted providing they have maintained at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA. Students with less than 18 college-level hours must also meet the criteria established for high school students. The University welcomes applications from international students, who are considered on the basis of their secondary school record, their ACT or SAT I scores, and their Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores (550 minimum).
