In-Depth Description

ANDREW COLLEGE

Cuthbert, Georgia

The College and Its Mission

Founded in 1854, Andrew College is a small, two-year, residential college related to the United Methodist Church. Its mission is to provide an academically challenging liberal arts curriculum within a nurturing community. As a two-year, senior collegeparallel, church-related college, Andrew exists to provide students with a better beginning to their college careers. Andrew specializes in the education of freshmen and sophomores. Historically, 100 percent of Andrew College's graduates are accepted into four-year colleges and universities.

For a quarter of a century, the Andrew College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, has won national recognition and was the number one chapter during five of those years. There are more than 1,000 chapters of Phi Theta Kappa, and no other chapter, in public or private institutions, has established a more impressive record. Andrew College seeks to achieve its goals by providing several advantages, many of which are unique to a small campus with a church-related environment: the opportunity for intellectual, social, and spiritual development; a professionally competent faculty that is dedicated to teaching; individual attention to students at all levels of operation within the College; a two-year curriculum that parallels that of four-year colleges and universities; a cultural enrichment program that encourages students to appreciate the arts; the opportunity to learn leisure-time skills that lead to the development of a healthy body; remediation in the basic skills; orientation experiences for successful adjustment to college life; academic advising; a student community committed to the earning of a college education; and cultural and academic resources for the community and churches in the area.

Andrew College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097; telephone: 404-679-4501) to award associate degrees. Andrew College is listed by the University Senate of the United Methodist Church.

Academic Programs

The academic program at Andrew College is specifically designed for freshman and sophomore students. The faculty members serve at Andrew because they enjoy teaching freshmen and sophomores. This attitude and expertise contribute significantly to the quality of education that students receive.

Andrew College offers programs that lead to advanced degrees in the arts and sciences. The College offers the Associate of Arts degree, the Associate of Science degree, and the Associate of Music degree. To be eligible for graduation, a student must have earned at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average on the work attempted at Andrew College. All associate degrees have a core curriculum of liberal studies, including a required curriculum of essential skills, humanities/fine arts, science/mathematics/technology, social science, and physical education. Each student must satisfactorily complete a course in religion or philosophy and satisfy Cultural Enrichment Program requirements. All students who graduate from Andrew College must demonstrate proficiency in computer and oral communication skills.

All students entering Andrew College are assigned a faculty adviser who assists students in all matters relating to their academic progress. Andrew College schedules free tutoring during each term for students who need extra help with their studies. Some students, including students on academic probation and those admitted on a conditional basis, are assigned to mandatory study and tutoring sessions. Enrichment seminars are offered in areas beyond those covered in regular class study. These courses provide students with a challenge to do in-depth study and carry institutional credit only. Andrew College offers a number of programs that assist students in reaching their educational potential. For a variety of reasons, some applicants to Andrew College may need to improve their academic skills in order to be successful in a full-time schedule of college-level courses. The Strategic Studies Program serves students who need to improve their academic skills before embarking on a full-time schedule of college-level courses. The program contains a selected schedule of college-level course work as well as other specially designed courses that provide intensive study and individual guidance at a pace that is compatible with the students' abilities. Tutorial assistance is provided.

Andrew College has established an intensive level of academic support services designed for and limited to specifically identified and accepted students with documented learning disabilities and/or attention deficit disorders. While the Focus Program supplements and complements the tutorial and advising services available to all students, it provides an additional level of professional assistance and monitoring to enhance the students' probability for success.

Andrew College offers an English as a Second Language (ESL) Program for students whose native language is not English and gives them a choice in the selection of the instructional program.

Through the Cultural Enrichment Program (CEP), Andrew College recognizes the fact that exposure to the cultural arts is an essential part of a liberal arts education. As a graduation requirement, all degree-seeking students must attend designated programs relating to the cultural arts during their enrollment.

Costs

Although Andrew College is a private college, an Andrew education is affordable. Tuition and fees for the 200506 academic year are $8550. Room and board are $5385 for the academic year. Books and supplies average $600 to $700 per academic year. Approximately $2300 per year should be allowed for other costs, including transportation and personal expenses.

Financial Aid

Approximately 90 percent of Andrew College students receive some type of federal or institutional aid. Students from Georgia are eligible for the Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant and may be eligible for the HOPE Scholarship. Scholarships are given for academic excellence, community service, intercollegiate sports, spiritual life, and programs such as chorus, art, drama, piano, photography, yearbook, and journalism.

Every year, the Office of Admission holds a Scholarship Day program, where students who have a 3.0 GPA or above and at least a 1000 on the SAT I are invited to compete for academic scholarships. Four Andrew Scholar awards (full tuition, room, and board scholarships) are presented at the competition, along with other academic awards. Scholarships or loans may be awarded to students who are members of the United Methodist Church. Other churches, religious and community organizations, and fraternal or business groups may also sponsor financial awards. Government programs at the federal and state levels provide a variety of grants, low-interest educational loans, and work-study employment opportunities for students. Eligibility for many of these programs is based on need.

Faculty

The faculty at Andrew College is committed to the education of freshmen and sophomores. The success of the students at the next level and beyond is the focus of the faculty and the academic program at Andrew.

The College employs 29 full-time and 5 part-time faculty members. The student-faculty ratio varies each year but is maintained at or below 16:1, resulting in lively discussions, teacher-student interaction, and individual attention. The student-faculty ratio for 200304 was 13:1. Eight members of the full-time faculty hold doctoral degrees, two have terminal degrees in their field, and the remainder hold master's degrees in their area of specialty.

Student Body Profile

Andrew College has a diverse population of students from all over the world. Approximately 3 percent of the College population is international students from countries such as Japan, Nigeria, Trinidad, Mexico, Guatemala, and Korea. Based on figures from fall 2003, 80 percent of students were from Georgia, 10 percent were from Florida, 5 percent were from Alabama, and 2 percent were from other states. The total student population in fall 2003 was 320 students. The College plans to grow to 500 students by 2005. Ninety percent of Andrew College students live in a College residence hall.

While most students transfer to schools in Georgia, graduates have chosen to transfer to schools as far away as New England or California.

Student Activities

The student life program at Andrew College is designed to promote activities and programs that are supportive of the College's aims and purposes. The first two years of college are critical for academic success; therefore, programs that support and enhance students' lives are very important.

Andrew College is committed to the idea that total education involves more than academic pursuit. Activities, including intramural recreation, student activities, religious activities, career and transfer services, student government, and residential and commuter student programs, are among the many programs offered. All freshman students are required to complete a student orientation program.

Informal recreation opportunities available to students include basketball, indoor and outdoor volleyball, racquetball, walleyball, weight training, and tennis. Formalized recreational opportunities exist under the umbrella of intramurals and include team and individual sports and exercise programs. Off-campus recreational opportunities are promoted throughout the year. A wide variety of student activities take place at Andrew. Many organizations and various offices of the College provide a diversity of programs. The Student Events and Activities (SEA) Board is the chief programming committee in the student life area and sponsors events such as Homecoming, major dances, movies, coffeehouse performers, speakers, and comedy acts. Student organizations at Andrew College offer many leadership opportunities and operate under the jurisdiction of the Student Development Committee. Such organizations include the Student Government Association, International Student Association, Outdoor Adventure Club, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, AndrewServes, and the Residence Hall Association.
