The College
Anderson College, founded in 1911, is a private, coeducational, four-year liberal arts college sponsored by the South Carolina Baptist Convention. The College offers a clearly Christian educational program whereby students are provided opportunities to develop intellectually, physically, spiritually, socially, and morally.
Anderson College enrolls approximately 1,700 students, 76 percent of whom attend full-time. In addition, about half of the student population lives in campus housing. In the typical academic year, the College enrolls students from more than twenty-five states and over fifteen other countries. The student body consists primarily of traditional-age students and of students from upstate South Carolina; however, many are nontraditional-age students and come from other geographic areas. Campus housing is available to international students.
A comprehensive program of student activities is provided, including varsity and intramural athletics, Christian ministry opportunities, theater, clubs and organizations, student government, and student-sponsored social activities. Intercollegiate sports programs for men include baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, tennis, track, and wrestling. Intercollegiate sports programs for women include basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track, and volleyball. The College also offers club sports in equestrian and cheerleader/dance, which comes under the umbrella of athletics. Anderson College is a member of NCAA DivisionII and of the CVAC (Carolinas-Virginia) conference.
A new masters degree in education program is scheduled to be offered in January 2006.
Location
The central campus of the College, which includes a small wooded park, athletic facilities, and student housing, occupies a 32-acre tract in an attractive, quiet neighborhood in the city of Anderson. In addition to the central campus, some buildings and parking areas are located on adjacent land. The city of Anderson is located in the northwestern section of South Carolina, halfway between Atlanta, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina. The city serves as a shopping hub for a large area of northwestern South Carolina and northeastern Georgia. Anderson is served by Interstate 85 and the Greenville/Spartanburg Airport.
Majors and Degrees
Anderson College offers the Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in art (ceramics, general studio, graphic design, interior design, painting/drawing), Christian ministry, church music, communications (journalism, speech/theater, writing), English, history, human services, music, psychology, religion, Spanish, and theater. The Bachelor of Science degree is awarded in biology, business (accounting, computer information services, finance/economics, human resource management, and management), cytotechnology, education (early childhood, elementary, secondary), mathematics, and physical education (kinesiology). A Bachelor of Music Education is also offered. Teacher certification is offered in art education (K12), elementary/early childhood education (K8); music education (K12); physical education (K12); special education, and secondary education (712) in biology, English, mathematics, social studies, and Spanish.
There are five degrees that may be obtained through the adult accelerated program: the Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in computer information systems, Bachelor of Human Services and Resources, Bachelor of Criminal Justice, and Bachelor of Science in elementary education/early childhood.
Academic Programs
The College follows the semester calendar and offers two summer sessions. A minimum of 128 credit hours is required for the bachelor's degree.
In order to graduate from any degree program of the College, a student must complete a general education component and a major studies component and must satisfy competence requirements in reading, writing, mathematics, and speaking. The ethical dimension of life is emphasized in all programs. Students have the opportunity to participate in internship experiences, study-travel, and overseas study.
Academic Facilities
Anderson College's Callie Stringer Rainey Fine Arts Center provides the finest facility in upstate South Carolina for art, theatrical, musical, and community functions and houses chapel services and other campus events. The Watkins Teaching Center contains most of the classrooms, a computer laboratory, conference rooms, and faculty offices. Other academic facilities on campus include the 60,000-volume Johnston Memorial Library, Merritt Administration Building, Merritt Auditorium, and Vandiver Hall. A new 45,000-square-foot library is scheduled for completion for fall 2006. The new $7.2-million library will also house an Internet caf, art museum, and 24-hour coffee and dessert bar.
Costs
Charges for 200405 were $10,725 per semester, including tuition, fees, room, and board. For commuting students, the cost was $7700 per semester for tuition and fees. Books and supplies cost approximately $500 per semester. Charges for international students are the same as for regular boarding students. Personal expenses for transportation, recreation, and miscellaneous needs vary with the individual student. Students may keep cars on campus; there is a $30 fee for a parking permit.
Financial Aid
It is the intent of Anderson College to provide financial assistance to all accepted students who, without such aid, would be unable to attend. Institutional aid for the incoming freshman class of 2004 (boarding) averaged $6540 per year. There are additional sources of financial aid available to qualified students. It is best to complete and mail all required forms as soon as possible, since most aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis for qualified applicants. The first award deadline is March15. The Financial Aid Office awards aid regardless of race, creed, place of national origin, or ethnic group.
Faculty
A faculty of 94 full-time and part-time professors brings the student-faculty ratio to 16:1, allowing for small classes and easy acces*sibility to professors and instructors. Sixty-seven percent of the College's faculty members have a Ph.D. or other equivalent terminal degree.
Student Government
The entire student body is represented in the Student Government Association by 3 elected officers who form the executive branch of the association. Senators from each class are also elected and help plan student activities for social and educational enrichment.
Admission Requirements
Anderson College seeks to admit those who show promise of academic and social success at the College. Each applicant's record is examined for evidence reflecting potential for intellectual and social maturity, strength of character, and seriousness of purpose. The major factors considered in admission include graduation from high school, high school grades in college-preparatory courses, high school curriculum, and SAT or ACT scores. In addition, the College may choose to examine further any applicant by use of personal interviews or tests administered by the College.
TOEFL scores are required of international applicants. A score of 550 is recommended. The SAT is not required of nonnative English-speaking students. An I-20 (student visa) can normally be issued within two weeks of receipt of all required admission materials and tuition funds.

The Admissions Office processes applications on a rolling basis, which enables the College to notify a candidate of the admission decision within two weeks after all credentials have been received.
