In-Depth Description

ALBERTUS MAGNUS COLLEGE

New Haven, Connecticut

The College

Founded in 1925 by the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs, Albertus Magnus College educates men and women to become leaders in all walks of life. The College is committed to providing a liberal arts education rooted in the Dominican tradition of scholarship. Professors at Albertus strive to help their students develop in all areas; as much attention is paid to the nurturing of a student's aesthetic, physical, and moral capacities as to his or her intellectual capabilities. In 1992, the College began offering its first graduate-level course of study through the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program. More recently, the College has expanded its offerings to include graduate-level programs that include the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program, the Master of Science in Management program, the Master of Arts in Art Therapy program, the Master of Arts in Leadership program, and the Master of Business Administration program.

The 2,300 students who attend Albertus find their academic home in one of the three major programs of the College. The traditional undergraduate program has a student body of approximately 500 students, who live and learn on the beautiful 50-acre campus in the Prospect Hill neighborhood of New Haven. These students come from various parts of the United States (largely the New England area), Europe, Africa, Asia, and South and Central America. About 60 percent of the students live on campus in student dormitories that are renovated mansions from the early 1900s. The housing program fosters a strong sense of community spirit, and students often plan workshops, parties, and other social and learning events in their residence halls.

The Campus Center is a hub of student activities, such as comedy shows, live music, contests, and other unique functions. There is a variety of on-campus organizations, including the Student Government Association, the Campus Activities Board, a dance team, the Outspoken Club, the English Club, the Art Club, the Business Club, and numerous creative writing options, such as Breakwater, the literary magazine. Albertus has recently added a new cyber lounge, the Common Ground, where students can check e-mail, work on homework, and enjoy a cup of coffee.

Students may also share in the excitement of live drama through the College's professionally managed ACT 2 Theatre, providing a number of artistic, academic, and recreational possibilities. In addition, students are encouraged to become part of the New Haven community through extracurricular and volunteer activities. The Campus Ministry provides opportunities to volunteer and participate in community service programs.

The Cosgrove, Marcus, Messer Athletic Center houses a 25-yard pool, a Jacuzzi, three racquetball courts, a weight and cardio room, a dance studio, and a gymnasium. In addition to this facility, there are soccer and softball fields, an outdoor track, and several tennis courts. Albertus fields intercollegiate athletic teams in baseball, basketball, cross-country, soccer, and tennis for men and basketball, cross-country, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball for women. Albertus's teams compete in NCAA Division III/Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC).

Location

New Haven is a multicultural city with a population of more than 130,000 people. The city hosts approximately 16,000 students attending the seven colleges and universities in the greater New Haven area. This concentration of students creates exciting choices for social, recreational, and cultural activities for Albertus students. The city has some of the finest theaters in the country, including the Long Wharf and Shubert theaters. There are many fantastic art collections, museums, and movie theaters. Large shopping facilities, excellent restaurants, and several recreational areas are only a short distance from the Albertus Magnus College campus.

Majors and Degrees

The Albertus Magnus College traditional undergraduate program confers the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, and Associate of Arts degrees. The areas of study include accounting, art (history and studio), art therapy, biology, business administration, chemistry, child development and mental health, communications, creative writing, criminal justice, drama, education (grades 412), English, finance, foreign language, general studies, graphic design, history, humanities, human services, industrial and organizational psychology, international business, management information systems, marketing, mathematics, performing arts/theater, philosophy/religion, photography, physical sciences, political science, prelaw, premedicine, psychology, sports communications, social science, social work, sociology, urban studies, and visual and performing arts.

Academic Programs

Albertus Magnus College is committed to providing a liberal arts education that promotes the pursuit of truth in all its dimensions. The College recognizes the importance of cultivating core competencies and knowledge if students are to meet the challenges and opportunities that they will encounter in their communities and workplaces. Albertus has recently developed the Insight Program, which serves as the Colleges core curriculum. Through this program, students build a thinking framework that will support them throughout their lives as they realize their goals. In addition, the Insight Program helps students to improve their capabilities in critical and creative thinking; to grasp the methods of scientific, quantitative, mathematical, and philosophical reasoning; and to appreciate and assess perspectives different from their own. The B.A. and B.S. degrees require 120 credits for graduation, the B.F.A. requires 127 credits, and the A.A. requires 60 credits. Students may relate academic study to work experience through a system of academically credited internships. The College's Office of Career Services helps graduating students prepare for career direction and job placement. The Academic Development Center and Writing Center provide personal instruction to students who may benefit from additional help with their schoolwork. The centers also provide services to those students with learning disabilities. Students who show strong academic potential may pursue a course of study through the College's honors program. Through the College's system of internships for juniors and seniors, Albertus students have become increasingly involved in the New Haven community and gain valuable, practical, professional training. Often, internships lead to permanent positions with local companies and corporations.

Academic Facilities

Rosary Hall, the College's first building, now houses a library collection of 110,000 volumes, 600 periodicals, 4,400 pieces of microfilm, and full access to the Internet, which includes LexisNexis, EBSCOhost, and PsycINFO. The interlibrary loan program has national access to materials at academic and public libraries across the country. The Media Center has equipment that students may use to produce new materials as well as review older materials. Interlibrary services with the University of New Haven and Quinnipiac College are also available. The New Center for Science, Art and Technology provides the most modern scientific equipment available for students majoring in biological and physical sciences, along with state-of-the-art broadcasting technology for communication students. Aquinas Hall houses the academic computer labs, which are equipped with personal computers, digital scanners, laser printers, and full Internet access. Every classroom in Aquinas Hall is laptop compatible, and the entire campus is engineered for wireless use.

Costs

The costs for the 200506 school year are $17,268 for tuition, $7928 for room and board (nineteen meals per week), and $500 for student fees. Expenses for books, travel, and personal supplies vary.

Financial Aid

Albertus Magnus College offers a variety of merit-based scholarships to students who have achieved high academic standing in high school or in their two-year college programs. In addition to scholarships based solely on academics, the College offers scholarships for students who attend Catholic high schools, students who are valedictorians or salutatorians of their high schools, students who live in the New Haven area, and students who have shown a commitment to community service. Interested students should contact the Office of Admission for specific information regarding these and other scholarship opportunities. Scholarships are awarded to eligible students who apply and are accepted to the College prior to March15.

Approximately 85 percent of the College's students receive financial aid in some form. The College requires that students file the Albertus Magnus College financial aid application form and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for Albertus scholarships and grants, Federal Perkins Loans, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, and Federal Work-Study awards. The College awards financial aid on a rolling basis; however, students who are accepted and submit their FAFSA forms by February28 are given priority.

Faculty

Faculty members at Albertus come from leading universities of the United States and abroad and are one of the College's greatest assets. Ninety percent of the 75 full- and part-time faculty members hold a Ph.D. or the equivalent. Their primary concern is teaching, although the work of many faculty members has been published. Students find faculty members accessible for academic or personal counseling and for campus sports and activities.

Student Government

Through the Student Government Association (SGA), Albertus students have the primary responsibility for governing their own residential and social life. All full-time matriculated students are members of the SGA and, through its committees and officers, manage student government and social affairs and participate in the campus judicial system. Students serve on faculty committees, the Academic Policy Committee, and the Library Committee.

Admission Requirements

Albertus Magnus College welcomes applications from students of all ages, nationalities, and ethnic, cultural, racial, and religious groups. Applicants may be admitted as freshmen or as transfer, provisional, or special students.

In evaluating freshman candidates, the Office of Admission considers a student's application, counselor recommendation, high school transcript, essay, extracurricular activities, and scores on the SAT or ACT. Emphasis is placed on the student's record of performance rather than on the results of standardized tests. Sixteen high school units in academic subjects are required for entrance.

Transfer students are welcome at the College. They must submit high school records, SAT or ACT scores, and college records (if necessary) for evaluation, in addition to the application and the recommendation. Interviews are recommended for freshman and transfer applicants.

More information is available on the University's Web site, listed in this In-Depth Description.

Application and Information

The College accepts students for entrance on a rolling admission basis. Students may also apply online at the Web site. As soon as all of a candidate's admission materials have been received, his or her application is considered and notification is made as soon as a decision has been reached.
