The College
Adrian College, chartered in 1859, is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Recognized for providing high-quality education by the College Board Review and U.S. News & World Report, Adrian is characterized by teaching excellence and individual treatment of students. The College's mission is to maintain a learning environment that stimulates individual growth and academic excellence. In fall 2004, Adrian College enrolled 1,013 students (465 men and 548 women) of whom 959 were full-time. Approximately 98 percent of the student body is of traditional college age. Currently, students come from sixteen states, but most come from the surrounding Midwest states of Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. The international student population represents China, India, Japan, Kenya, Northern Ireland, South Africa, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe.
Adrian College students enjoy a lifestyle that combines residential life with academic challenges and social opportunities. Nearly all of Adrian's students live on campus in one of nine residence halls that provide unique living and learning environments for residents. With more than sixty-five organizations to choose from, students can apply their talents, interests, and skills in extracurricular activities ranging from academic honoraries and religious, cultural, and social organizations to intercollegiate and intramural athletic teams. Adrian College is a member of the NCAA Division III and the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The Merillat Sport and Fitness Center is an 80,000-square-foot multisport forum that includes basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts surrounded by a 1/10-mile indoor track as well as two racquetball courts, an athletic training room, a weight-training and conditioning room, classrooms, a physiology laboratory, and a dance studio. The performance gymnasium, which seats 1,300 people, is host to numerous intercollegiate basketball and volleyball matches.
Location
Adrian College is located in Adrian, Michigan, the county seat of Lenawee County in the southeastern part of the state. Adrian is a city of approximately 22,000 people, situated in the center of an agricultural, industrial, and recreational area. State and U.S. highways and nearby expressways provide convenient access to the metropolitan areas of Detroit, Toledo, Chicago, Indianapolis, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh. Both the Detroit and Toledo airports are within an hour's drive of the College.
Majors and Degrees
Adrian College is authorized by its Board of Trustees to grant the following degrees: Associate of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music Education, and Bachelor of Business Administration. Majors include accountancy; art; arts management; biology; business administration (management or marketing); chemistry; communication arts and sciences; criminal justice; earth science; economics; English (journalism, literature, or writing); environmental science; environmental studies; exercise science; French; German; health, physical education, and recreation; history; interior design; international business; international studies; mathematics; music; musical theater; philosophy/religion; physics; political science; psychology; religion; social work; sociology; Spanish; teacher education; and theater. Students may also choose to design their own major, in consultation with the appropriate department chairpersons, or even major in two or more areas of study. Professional certification areas include elementary and secondary education. Preprofessional programs are offered in architecture, art therapy, dentistry, engineering, law, medicine, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, podiatry, seminary, and veterinary studies.
Academic Programs
Distribution requirements are designed to emphasize liberal education through a broad understanding of the liberal arts and have been established in several liberal arts areas (arts, humanities, social sciences, natural and physical sciences, and cross-cultural perspective) and in basic skill areas that indicate education proficiency (communication, linguistics, and physical development). All students must complete at least one course in religion or philosophy and at least one 4-hour laboratory science course. Students must also declare their major during their sophomore year. Successful completion of a minimum of 124 semester hours, with at least 30 hours at the most advanced level, is needed to obtain a baccalaureate degree. Up to 60 semester hours may be earned through nontraditional credit programs such as CLEP, PEP, LLE, Advanced Placement, and others. An honors program is open to highly motivated students of proven ability. Successful completion of the honors program is noted on the student's transcript and diploma.
Adrian maintains a two-semester calendar. The first semester runs from late August to mid-December; the second semester from early January to the end of April. A May term and summer session are offered for students who wish to intensify or accelerate their studies.
Off-Campus Programs
Participation in approved off-campus and cooperative programs can help students earn academic credit. Adrian offers a variety of ways to visit and study other cultures through established formal arrangements, as well as gain professional experience via cooperative arrangements with a variety of off-campus sites. Formal arrangements for study abroad are available in Australia, Austria, Britain, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Russia, and Spain, although students may arrange opportunities to study in other countries. Opportunities for domestic study and living experience are available through the Appalachian Semester, the Philadelphia Urban Semester, American University's Washington Semester, and programs offered by the Urban Life Center in Chicago and the Washington Center.
Career internships, available in all academic disciplines, provide all students with opportunities to test their career interests and develop job-related skills through College-approved work experiences. Students may earn up to 12 semester hours working for domestic or international employers.
Academic Facilities
Shipman Library includes a complete line of academic library services. The collection numbers more than 82,000 volumes, plus substantial holdings of microforms, art prints, sound recordings, and subscriptions to more than 750 periodicals. The College completed a $6-million library expansion and renovation project in summer 2000.
Computer terminals and printers for student use are located in Jones Hall, Mahan Hall, North Hall, Peele Hall, Ridge Student Center, and Shipman Library. Access to IBM and IBM-compatible personal computers, printers, scanners, and Internet services is available to students at no charge. Many classrooms and all residence hall rooms are networked for Internet access.
General chemistry and biology laboratories equipped with sophisticated chemical and biochemical instrumentation are provided by the College. Labs for psychology, language study, physics, acoustical studies, and tissue culture provide students with access to a variety of research opportunities. Special facilities include art studios, music practice rooms, greenhouses, and a planetarium.
Downs Hall, the only remaining building from Adrian College's original campus, houses the Stubnitz Gallery of Art and the Downs Studio Theater, a 199-seat facility with a thrust-style stage, where most student theater productions take place. Dawson Auditorium, with its traditional proscenium stage, is used for College musical and theatrical productions, Adrian Symphony concerts, and guest artist appearances.
Costs
Full-time tuition for 200405 was $17,500, and room and board were $5770. The required activity fee of $100 covered the cost of student participation in a variety of campuswide social activities and attendance at Adrian College sports events. The average cost of books and supplies was about $400 per year. No additional costs for laboratory or computer use are assessed.
Financial Aid
Adrian College strives to make a high-quality private liberal arts education affordable to its students through various forms of financial assistance. Approximately 85 percent of the student body receives some form of financial aid through scholarships, grants, loans, and campus employment. The College also participates in all applicable Michigan aid programs, as well as the Federal Work-Study, Federal Pell Grant, and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) programs. The Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Stafford Student Loan, TERI Supplemental Loan, and Federal Parent Loan (PLUS) programs are also available. A number of part-time positions are available for those who wish to work on campus while earning applicable financial assistance. For those with a demonstrated record of high academic ability, merit-based scholarship assistance is available. To be considered for any financial assistance, a student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, which is used to conduct a need analysis for the student. The FAFSA may be obtained from most high school counselors or directly from the Adrian College Office of Financial Aid.
Faculty
Teaching with a personal approach is a top priority at Adrian College. Classes at Adrian are not conducted by teaching assistants. Instead, classes are taught by dedicated faculty membersmost of whom hold the terminal degree in their field. With a student-faculty ratio of 13:1 and an average class size of 14, students are assured of a high-quality education that unites challenge and opportunity within a framework of personal and institutional support.
Student Government
Adrian College Student Government is the student organization charged with representing student views on matters of institutional policy and operation at all levels of College organization. As a student organization, it also provides students with a common forum where their individual ideas may be heard, debated, and perhaps adopted. Appropriations and other major decisions are made in full-senate sessions. Other work is carried out through the Cooperative Activities Board or through the College governance system. Any student who wishes to run for student-elected office may do so.
Admission Requirements
Adrian College enrolls qualified students regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, physical characteristics, race, religion, or sexual orientation. Applicants should present at least 15 units of secondary school preparation, including 4 units of English, 3 units of mathematics, 3 units in sciences, 2 units in social sciences, and 2 units in foreign language.
Students applying for freshman admission must also perform satisfactorily on either the ACT Assessment or the SAT and must request that their scores be sent directly to Adrian College. The average high school GPA of entering Adrian College students who have taken college-preparatory courses during their four years of high school is 3.2. The mean ACT Assessment composite score is 22. Transfer students must be eligible to return immediately to the last attended college and must have an above-average cumulative GPA. Prospective transfer students must request an official transcript from each college attended to be sent directly to the Office of Admissions at Adrian College. Nontraditional students must complete a different application for admission but are evaluated on the same basis as traditional freshmen. A GED equivalency certificate may be substituted for a full high school transcript.
Students from other countries are always welcome at Adrian College and are encouraged to apply. International applicants must file an international application for admission and must submit complete secondary school records, transcripts of any university credit, and TOEFL test scores demonstrating sufficient fluency in English to participate in the regular instructional program of the College. A minimum TOEFL score of 500 is required for admission. A full program of services for international students includes English as a second language (ESL) classes for further assistance in English, housing and food service, and pick-up service from the airport. International students are eligible for grants that cover the cost of room and board for the academic year.
Application and Information
A nonrefundable fee of $20 must be submitted with an application for admission. Application can be made anytime following the completion of the junior year of high school. Students are usually notified of the admissions decision within two weeks after the application file is complete. Campus visits are strongly encouraged but not required.
