We won’t know if Chicago will be chosen for the 2016 Summer Olympics until October 2009, but that shouldn’t stop you from exploring The Windy City as your choice for your college years.

Start your day in Chicago’s South Side and visit the University of Chicago. Count the gargoyles on your tour of this Gothic Revival-inspired campus but be sure to pay attention to details about the university’s unique Core Curriculum. University of Chicago is known for its Nobel Prize-winning faculty and alumni—seventy-nine prizes are tied to the University in all. They don’t call the University of Chicago “Nobel Alley” for nothing!

After your tour, refuel with Medici on 57th’s famous croissants and soak in the atmosphere of one of UChicago students’ most beloved hangouts before heading north to enjoy downtown’s attractions. There’s more to Chicago than the Sears Tower and the Magnificent Mile. Stroll through Millennium Park, ride the Ferris wheel at Navy Pier, or examine a T-Rex fossil at the Field Museum of Natural History. You can also stop by the Lincoln Park Zoo, or catch a Cubs game at historic Wrigley Field. Hint: Take the “L” train if you can. Street parking is always difficult to find on game days in Wrigleyville.

Downtown Chicago also has several colleges for students interested in an urban campus. DePaul University, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Roosevelt University are just a few schools that call downtown Chicago home.

Your trip is not complete, however, without spending some time in Chicago’s North Side. Visit Evanston, Illinois’ Northwestern University, the only private college in the Big Ten. A medium-sized research university, students love the intense, rigorous academics with a down-to-earth Midwestern environment. Make sure you see “The Rock” on your campus tour. A popular campus landmark, “The Rock” serves as a student message board with historical roots to the Vietnam War. In addition to academic buildings and residence halls, Northwestern has its own beach on Lake Michigan. Take a walk in the sand, watch the sunset, and reflect on all that Chicago has to offer soon-to-be college students.
