Highlighting Unique Skills

During the admissions process, it’s all about the grades. The scholarship
process, however, is a little different. Scholarship providers look for
students who have unique attributes and opinions. Essentially, a successful
applicant is going to be someone that sets themselves apart from the rest
of the applicants. As you help your students through this process, help them
become more self aware by encouraging to ask themselves: “How do my skills
set me apart?” or “What makes me unique?”

Students should also stress their passions and ideas. Like Ross says,
scholarship providers want to know: “What do you like doing better than
anything else in the world?” Scholarship providers are always looking for
students who can put their own spin on things (like she said earlier—they’re
looking for students who stand out). Motivate your students to push
further, dig deeper, and really market themselves as they prepare
scholarship applications.

This is a great point that can be applied to both scholarships and job resumes, alike. For instance, I received a very high paying job because I had mentioned, in an interview, that at age 12 I began reading HTML programming books (I am now 26) and by age 14, I built the local community college's website, for a fee of $10.00 an hour. I would work from home and submit how many hours I worked. Almost every single week, for a year and a half, they would increase my hours by 150%-200%, because they could not believe how I had done so much in so little time.

I now include this information in my resume because I know realize, being older and more knowledgeable, that this was exrtraordinary for a 12 and 14 year old to do these things. Mind you, this was before Microsoft Frontpage and all the other Web Creating Softwares were designed. I simply wrote the entire website, including Java script programming, using Notepad under accessories, in WIndows 95. Even though I am pursuing a Master of Science in Accountany, this info helps me out because, regardless of what field you are in, almost all companies need someone who is technilogically savvy.

    Thanks

I am unique in that no matter how many times I have been knocked down I get back up. Why? Because I refuse to loose. This may not seem unique, but it has afforded me exposure to some very unique situations while travelling through life without connections, without advantages that some others have.
I love finding out new things that others don't know yet, I love that I can do that and that my intuition guides me in life. For instance, I think that I know what causes AIDS - but it is so drastically different no one would believe me. I also think that we should quit using fossil fuel to get off this rock into space or we are going to burn ourselves and our atmosphere into ash. Magnetism with a strong enough opposing polarity could do this on a molecular level. And last but certainly not least, I have huge ideas for making a computer that would run without electricity. In fact, it would have an entirely different shape of hard drive and the components need to be built a tiny bit differently.

The reason I mention the last one is that this is my current passion: computers and software.

What makes me stand out, other than the fact I am returning to college after 25 years of life as an adult? Well, let's see here... I have raised three wonderful children and am a new grandmother, but there's so much more to me than that. I've spent a lifetime involved in community service, beginning at the age of ten when I volunteered to do clerical work at an office to serve families of the incarcerated. From that, I went on to assist the founder of our local Christmas charity, not only doing clerical work but repairing toys, coordinating donations and even delivering the parcels myself!

Over the years, I've worked with women, children and family charities, anti-poverty organizations, and the chronic homeless of Seattle. I've worked on statewide political campaigns and a Presidential campaign, volunteered toward literacy at schools, lobbied for social reform and even tried revive our local tenant union. At one point, I was even asked to help City Hall develop an anti-slum ordinance because of my involvement with housing issues.

I can't emphasize enough to students out there how important it is to take the time to volunteer somewhere, not only when you're in high school so it looks good on your resume, but for the rest of your life. Even when you're working, you need to find a way to give back to your communities. You are more than the sum of your job qualifications. Give, and give generously. The rewards will come back to you a thousandfold.

My parents taught us to work us, be honest in our dealing and we would be rewarded. I have relapsing Multiple Sclerosis. I still work for my community by volunteering to work in a soup kitchens. I ride the bus and i use that time to knit scarfs for homeless children and make booties for babies at risk. I want to use what I have learned to right the atrocities of the poor. I have grown up in Jamaica New York. My parents have invited children in my home because there was no food in their homes. I have witnessed broken families because of poverty. I want to apply what I have learned to help people less fortunate than myself.

I am interested in a scholarship to Bastyr university. I am very passionate about serving my knowledge and health with the Native American people. I plan to work on the reservation after graduation . I understand that there is more of a need for a natural approach to health. To serve them from a good heart not to treat them as another patient but as a whole person. I have spent time with the First Nation people and have learned to respect and love their culture. They have many health issues that need to be adressed, by people who truly care. This is my deepest desire and I have been called. I need more education. I need as much help financially for this goal.

My name is Gratia Merrill, and I already have a Masters in Science, however my goal is needing to find my passion. I have chosen to receive another Bachelors degree in Computer science with a spin linking it to Criminal justice(paralegal). Having had personal experiences dealing with the justice system: I have come to greatly respect it ,and what many opportunities it gives each one of us in the society. Initially my education leaned in the education area, however as time went on I found another way to give my talents and experiences meaning to the rest of society. I have a passion to write two books that will inform, educate and make aware what few people know about how the world views the abused/misled and misguided/lost. Having the priveledge to receive a scholarship will catapult me further towards my dream, which is to make people, especially women, what they need to know to give them an awareness that will help them in their lives. I have also raised two wonderful daughters on my own, who are now an intrical part of giving back to society. They have both volunteered. My volunteering is varied. Calvary Assemble of God, helping with water baptism, assisting with christian concerts (sales of products), donating time for the homeless @ a center called Merci -Ministries to prepare clothing sets for them to be able to find employment, also donating to "Dress for Success". to help women receive 2 FREE complete outfits for interviews. Also I participated in "Walk for the Cure" for Breast Cancer, in 2008, and in the same year ,assisted with a silent auction and set-up for The Lymphoma/Leukemia Society, at a local restuarant, and gave for the Toys for Tots in 2007. That is why going back to school to change my direction and focus on life,in my later years will be more rewarding and closer to my passion. To give myself to others to enhance society. Thank you for listening to my story.
I live in Altamontr Springs, Fla. 32714 and my e-mail is : gratiasmerrill@yahoo.com. You may contact me if you need further questios answered. I am a goo listener, and ask lots of questios, as they say "knowledge is power, and the Mind is a terrible thing to waste" We learn for the rest of our lives.

Thank you for your time and the opportunity to share my thoughts with all of you. I appreciate you immensely. Please note my ultimate goal is a Doctorate in Social Work. I am currently in my second year with South Puget Sound Community College in Tumwater, Washington. My GPA is 3.1 From there my goal is to attend the University of Washington - Tacoma Branch.

My name is Pecola Colby. I am a single/divorced African American female and head of household. I am sixty four years old and a testimony to the challenges and yes resilience related to me being socioeconomically and ethnically challenged when comparing me to the dominate culture. My observation and/or perception with social services programs is that of a system at times, lacks fairness, responsiveness and accountability to some of the families they serve. I believe it is imperative that social workers remain accessible to families for support, to establish at all costs, courtesy with integrity and respect for all people regardless of race or culture. Trust is essential and this is one way to build trust. Further, it is necessary to take appropriate and necessary steps to become as proficient as possible on cultural beliefs with protocol, respect, sensitivity and with car, to recognize cultural barriers, to embrace cultural differences and to learn how best to develop the relationship in order to provide the best possible service care.

My interest and passion then and now is to obtain a Doctorate Degree in Social Work. My heart's desire is to become a Social Worker because I am caring, compassionate, sensitive, and believe all families/people are significant, their voices count and should be heard. Further, obtaining an advance degree will allow me to have opportunities to embrace all families and cultures including attending to their needs and providing multiple levels for services with care. I envision my role as a Social Worker to be a voice for families as they journey through various programs for services and resources in order that they receive the very best with care. I will ensure families are not allowed to wander simply because they have come to believe no one cares about them or their well being. As a Social Worker, I will serve as an Advocate for families when necessary to ensure they receive the services and programs best for them. I will work with families to mobilize formal and informal resources; to support family development and to make certain families are on solid ground; to allow for flexibility; and to recognize emerging family needs and community issues.

At this time in my life there are no obstacles to deter or distract me from achieving a Doctorate Degree in Social Work. My vision is clear. I am determined to succeed AND I know I will be an asset as a Social Worker to any organization or organized structural body.

From May 2004 to July 2008 I was employed with the Family Support Center in Olympia, Washington. I served as the Family Resource Specialist and assisted in meeting the needs of low income families. My responsibilities were to work with families and support them in identifying and prioritizing their needs. I helped them identify the most appropriate resources to meet those needs and empowered them to follow through in accessing those resources. I also served as an advocate for families when necessary and worked with case managers from other agencies to ensure a complete network of services. I am currently unemployed.

My volunteerism also demonstrates my commitment to families and communities. I serve as a volunteer with my church, New Life Baptist Church in Lacey, Washington in many roles and functions. I have successfully for more than five years and with a cadre of medical and non-medical volunteers brought multiple services and programs to the immediate and surrounding communities in Thurston County, e.g. The Smilemobile, a dental unit for children in low-income families and fifteen and younger, a "FREE" Back to School Physical Examiniation Day, Health Fairs, Walk-a-Thons, etc. I served as chair-person for the Unity For Excellence Tutorial Program. I serve as chair-person to the Senior Adult Ministry. I am an Usher.

My efforts were recognized in the community. In April 2004, I received the Making a Difference in The Life of a Child Award from Thurston County and in June 2004, I received the Unique Achievement Award from The Thurston County Council on Cultural Diversity.

Again thank you for your time. It has been my priviliege to share my thoughts and accomplishments with all of you. Please know I am available if necessary for further clarification to any questions and/or comments. Please note any amount of financial aid is most appreciative.

Please contact me at: 9225 Windsor Ln, NE

I stand out most by showing others its okay to be yourself. Find out what your passion is and go with it. Life is not about the almighty DOLLAR. I could have millions right now and IT wouldn't make me any happier. Now I'm not crazy and I know money is a necessity. It's part of everyday life, but to be consumed by it is unhealthy. I stand out because I don't have to spend a lot, to have fun. Good Friends are free and also, priceless
