Tip to Scholarship Success: Master the Basics
May 15, 2009
Patti Ross knows what makes a successful scholarship application. It’s
not necessarily the intricacies of a scholarship application essay.
Rather, it’s mastering the basics of applying. Ross highlights the
following essentials:
- Research—know the DEADLINES
- Personal awareness—take a personal survey
- Accuracy on application
- Feedback from others
Ross can’t stress deadlines enough. Nothing looks worse for an applicant
than to turn in their materials too late. Also, make sure your students are on
top of all the required materials. Oftentimes, it helps students to create a
folder for each scholarship they’re applying for and to place the name of
the scholarship as well as the amount and deadline on the cover. Encouraging
your students to stay organized will keep them better focused and less
stressed during the college and scholarship application season. It’s also
a great time to teach them valuable time management skills.

brettpond I am currently a student and my parents are consignors for my loans. It really bites that I had to do it this way. According to them they did save, but it just wasn't enough for the school I am going to(25k a year). In my opinion I can understand why you are struggling with your son's tuition. To me this should be a government that educates its youth at the highest level(not the cheapest).
Call the schools and ask them what they can give YOU. If one school offers one thing go to the other and tell them, then ask them if they are willing to offer more. Get the schools to fight for your son. I know my school is paying 14k of my tuition(normally 30k a semester) just because my mother and I asked these questions before coming here. I am also getting scholarships due to race and musical skills.

My son is very talented musically. He plays clarinet(7 years) and piano (10 years) and has been singing since he was born. He has applied to 7 schools for a Vocal Performance BM degree. He has gotten into Hartt Conservatory, Western Conn. State, Berklee College of Music, Manhattanville and Ithaca. He is in love with Ithaca and wants to go there. The tuition is 44,000 and other schools are just as expensive. My husband & I make about 170,000 combined but we are not wealthy. FAFSA said we could pay 41,000 a yr and I don't know how we are going to do it. I want him to go to the school of his choice but I don't want to be laden down with an expensive loan. I am older parent and would love to have time to enjoy my retirement. What can I do to get money? He is a B+ student with about 1620 on his SATs.

To Kachina and Howard, I'm currently in my first ten week course at Kaplan and I was told my federal student loan from Fannie Mae is going to cover my tuition for my Associates degree in Accounting. I'm wondering why you are not able to receive any more loans to finish your degrees. I'd like to know what I might be running into in the future here. I tried to contact you personally but I'm not sure how to do that. Let me know if you can, Donald Cowan

I need to find $8,000 in scholarship money or grant money to finish my education at Kaplan University for Medical Assisting. They originally told me I would only be required to pay $200 a term in technology fees, but now that I am halfway through my program they are saying I need more money on my part that the loans and pell grant are not covering.

Life is so hard yet am confident that given chance i can improve it through higher education. I believe i can enhance my studies successfully to the success of myself and the entire community around me. However, its almost impossible for me to achieve this dream without help from a good Samaritan. Even if it means paying back in installments after my studies.
