Honors Scholarships

Honors Scholarships

August 02, 2010

While a plethora of scholarships exist to award students based on ethnic background, extracurricular activity and athletics, some students want to be noticed for the hard work they’ve done in the classroom. Whether it’s by joining an honor society or ranking first in the class, an honors scholarship not only recognizes that achievement but also awards it. As an honors scholarship recipient, students can continue their academic excellence in the college classroom environment.

Hard-working honor students have little time to apply to colleges; let alone spare minutes to search for scholarships. That’s why the Fastweb database contains quite a collection of honors scholarship opportunities. By filling out a profile, Fastweb can match you to the honors awards that you have the likelihood of winning.

With honors scholarship opportunities at your fingertips, you can excel just as easily in your scholarship search as you do in the classroom. Below is a sampling of the honors scholarships that exist in our database—filling out a profile may match you to honors scholarships at your school of choice.

I agree with previous comments that there need to be more easily achieveable Honors scholarships. I work hard in my classes and have a 3.5 GPA, but do not qualify for Financial Aid or have the money to pay out of pocket. Scholarships are the only funds I have to continue my education. Hard work for students who want to attend school should be more recognized and awarded.

My daughter had a 4.2 GPA, 5's on 7 of 8 of her AP classes--4 on the other, was Captain of her swim team, played piano, 34 on ACT and was a National Merit Finalist--but neither her Dad or I are employed by a company that offers the National Merit Scholarship award. She goes to University of Michigan but the scholarship she received there just ended up reducing her grant aid and made her ineligible for federal work study. She earned a 4.0, including an A PLUS in her chemistry class, her first 2 semesters, works, and is heavily involved in community service projects/fundraising. UM does not offer any other merit scholarships to 2nd years unless you are a minority, from another country, or state. Not sure what my Michigan tax dollars are going for. That they bump you to Junior status so they can charge more for tuition, really bites. Anyway, good luck to all of you.

i dislike how few merit-based scholarships exist. there are a lot for sports and other activities, which is great. but i think there need to be more for actual grades!

Having a high GPA or "good grades" doesn't necessarily mean that a student has the skills he or she needs to do well in college, or do well in his or her actual career. Some classes don't accurately gauge mastery, and some students don't get the grade they deserve. However, I feel that there should be more Honors Scholarships. Everyone needs more opportunities to make it out of college with as little debt as possible.

There should be more scholarships like these out there! Academics and intelligence are way more important than, for example, a special talent that you might have.

    To Alexis Arkansas
you have obviously worked hard but the competition is fierce. Take the ACT again and try to surpass 30, that may open some more doors! Good Luck!

I have a 4.05 GPA, a 27 on the ACT and and am 4th in my class of 177. Merit alone, I can attend virtually any college in the US, Ivy or not. What keeps me from doing this? Money. Naturally. The sad truth is that Ivys and first-tier schools care little for any academic ability you may possess and more for all fiscal ability you--or your wealthy daddy--may possess. I've rummaged through Duke's and Wash U's websites, only to found they offer miniscule scholarship opportunities. If only every intelligent collegiate were rich and every rich collegiate were intelligent.

Scholarships are a great source of money to pay for college, but most people don’t have the time or energy to look for them. And even if they do, there is so much information out there that it can be totally overwhelming! We provide personalized scholarship searches for students. We focus on locating more obscure and local scholarships that are hard to find. You can find more information at www (dot) Scholar-Dollars (dot) com. Of course, the ultimate result and money won depends on the student’s motivation, determination, and commitment. The money is there if you are willing to work for it!
