Scholarships for Hispanic Journalism and Communications Students
These scholarships include awards for journalism, public relations, marketing, advertising and communications. See also the HACE, HACU, HHYA and HEEF scholarships programs.
Carlos M. CastaƱeda Journalism Scholarship
The Carlos M. CastaƱeda Educational Foundation awards renewable
scholarships to Spanish-speaking graduate students in journalism.
While candidates do not need to be Hispanic, they must be able to
write in Spanish at a professional level and demonstrate
knowledge of and interest in Hispanic culture and Latin American
current events. Applicants must have a 3.0 or higher GPA on a 4.0
scale. A 3.0 or higher GPA is also required for continued receipt of
the scholarship. Award amounts vary, but typically are about $7,000 a
year. The deadline is April 15.
CCNMA: Latino Journalists of California
CCNMA sponsors
scholarships
for students interested in a career in journalism, including the
Joel Garcia Memorial Scholarship
and the
Frank del Olmo Memorial Scholarship.
Applicants must either attend a California college or be a California
resident and must demonstrate financial need, academic excellence and
knowledge of Latino issues.
Award amounts vary from $1,000 to $2,000.
The deadline is in early April.

Hispanic Public Relations Association (HPRA)
The Hispanic Public Relations Association sponsors one $2,500
scholarship and nine $1,000 scholarships for Latino students
pursuing a career in communications or a related field. The deadline
is in early June.
The LAGRANT Foundation
The LAGRANT Foundation sponsors $5,000 scholarships for full-time
undergraduate students at accredited 4-year colleges and $10,000
graduate fellowships. Applicants must be of African American, Asian
Pacific American, Hispanic/Latino or Native American/Alaska Native
heritage. US citizenship or permanent residency is required.
Applicants must major in a field related to public relations,
marketing or advertising and want to pursue a career in one of these
fields. Undergraduate students must have at least a 2.75 GPA on a 4.0
scale, and gradaute students must have at least a 3.2 GPA. The
deadline is in late February.
National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ)
The National Association of Hispanic Journalists offers the Ruben
Salazar Scholarship to Hispanic high school seniors, college students
and first-year graduate students interested in careers in print,
photo, broadcast or online journalism.
Applicants must be student members of NAHJ.
Award amounts range from $1,000 to $5,000. The deadline is in early April.
San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists
The San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists provides an annual
scholarship to Hispanic students majoring in journalism or
communication who demonstrate financial need. Applicants must either
attend a San Antonio college or have a permanent residence in San
Antonio or Bexar County, Texas. The application link is on the bottom
right of the web page. The deadline is at the end of June.
