How to Score a Fulbright Scholarship

How to Score a Fulbright Scholarship

Fulbright Scholarship recepients are exposed to global learning.

By Bridget Kulla

Whether you dream of studying anthropology in Ghana or business in Germany, one scholarship can make it possible. Recent college graduates, graduate students and doctoral candidates with an interest in international travel and a passion for a field of study should take a look at the Fulbright Student Scholarship.

Supported by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Institute for International Education (IIE), the Fulbright Student Scholarship is the largest international exchange program for U.S. students. Awards are available in 45 disciplines although most countries also have grants that allow applicants to shape their own projects. Projects may include university coursework, field and library research, teaching English, or a combination of these areas.

The Fulbright began in 1946 from a proposal by Sen. J. William Fulbright to promote “mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries around the world.” Since its founding, more than 250,000 participants have received support to study in over 140 countries.

To be eligible for the Fulbright Student Scholarship:

  • Students must be U.S. citizens and in good health.
  • Applicants must be a graduating college senior, BS/BA degree holder, or a master’s or doctoral degree candidate.
  • Some Fulbright positions require proficiency in the language of the country where the project will take place.
  • Preference is given to students who have not resided or studied for longer than six months in the country to which they are applying.

Five different types of awards are available:

  • Full Grant: Covers round-trip travel, full funding for one academic year, and books and research allowances.
  • Travel Grant: Pays for round-trip travel to study in Germany, Hungary and Italy.
  • Business Grant: Funds projects in business, law and international relations in Germany, Mexico and Spain.
  • English Teaching Assistantships: Sponsors English language teachers in select countries.
  • Islamic Civilization Initiative Award: Awarded for study in countries with a significant Muslim population.

I truly wish that there was a way to put all of the scholarships in perspective. I mean I've applied for about a hundred scholarships, only to find that I'm not eligible for most of them due to the major I've chosen or the school I've chosen. It's hard enough to go back to school without having your scholarship search being a crap shoot.

The reason I should be admitted to the Art Institute program is as follows:

Well, In 1985 my husband and both my sons Lee and Jordan moved from New York to Florida – we really didn’t know many people, however in August of 1988 my husband all of a sudden died of a heart attack which left me with two small sons ages 7 and 9. It was very difficult to raise my sons properly since they weren’t the type of kids who listened very well; made two Bar Mitzvahs and sent them both to college which they both graduated. I had no help – no parents, no cousins and I knew very little people when I first came to Florida. Finally, both graduated from college – Jordan from FIU with a Hospitality Degree, working for the City of Miramar in the Recreation Department and Lee from Florida State University with a Finance Degree, working for a food company where he does the displays for Publix. In addition, he owns two properties and will continue to buy many more properties in the future. I had two homes that I had to sell without making a profit from them – lost everything and had to live with my friends for at least nine (9) months while my sons were in college (they both received Financial Assistance). I found a job and moved out. By the way, I had to file for Bankruptcy, overcame Cancer of the Colon Area and worked in Property Management for a long time until the job became overbearing, which I hated coming into work everyday, knowing that my stress level was increasing to 176/97 – I developed high blood pressure which certainly wasn’t going to benefit me in the long run health wise.

As confused as I was, NEVER WOULD I GIVE UP in finding my niche in life. I am 61 years of age and I wanted to accomplish something wonderful that belongs to me in my lifetime – I believe you never stop being a parent even though my sons are now 28 and 30 but now it’s MY TURN TO SHINE!!!! I just need some help and guidance to get there – life is hard but if you don’t try to accomplish your dreams and goals in life – life can be even harder – I know from experience – I REFUSE TO SETTLE!!!!!!!!!! I told both my sons that if you make your life too easy when you’re younger your life will be very difficult when you get older. In life you need to prepare but if you don’t have the opportunity to prepare you can become a product such as mine – I made my life when I was younger very easy, and now I’ve proved to myself that my life had become very difficult, because I didn’t prepare ahead of time in my life - I am the prefect product with that experience. I never had the proper guidance or support that I needed, so my strengths came within myself later in life after raising two sons by myself, surviving Cancer, losing everything and filing for Bankruptcy. I promised myself that I would continue to find myself no matter how long it took.

The reason I should be admitted to the program is at this point in my life I would not take my education for granted – I think when you are very young and foolish at times, you take your youth and education for granted because you think you’ll be young forever, but the years creep up and before you know it, wholla, you’re “61 years old.” I know that I would be an asset to the school and to myself in taking the Art of Cooking – I think I am going to love it!!!!!!!!!

The irony of all this is when I was raising my sons I was a terrible cook, where my cat use smell the food that I cooked and walk away from it. Boy will I surprise my sons after my courses in cooking at the Art Institute!!!!!!!!.

Thank you for the opportunity in advance, and I am looking forward to establishing myself for the first time in my life, where this program can lead to me to many great avenues in cooking and in life.

I will NEVER GIVE UP MY DREAMS TO BECOME SUCCESSFUL IN COOKING!!!!!!!!!!!!! FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS – IT’S NEVER TOO LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
