    Dear frustrated job seekers:

While it may be maddening to have to hear political opinion in a job column, politics is very relevant to the health of the economy meaning how many jobs there are or how much demand there will be for a service or good you choose to provide in lieu of working for someone else.
I must respond to the post who insists that the previous administration is responsible for the mess we are in. I have voted republican since my mistaken vote for Jimmy Carter and I don't always agree with all republican policies--especially those of Bush who betrayed our fiscal conservative values with his out of control spending. But you also must realize, that it was Bill Clinton (who by the way is looking better each passing day of the Obama administration), it was Bill Clinton who promoted NAFTA which is responsible for so many of our jobs going over seas. I was against it then and I am still against it--largely because while raising my children and experiencing their public education, I realized American's have a hard time supplying the highly educated and CHEAP labor that can be imported from or exported to foreign countries. Once again, altogether, repeat after me--it was Bill Clinton who set the ball rolling for Americans to lost jobs to better educated and better trained (engineering degrees not history/sociology majors and law degrees).
And, after being elected to and serving on my local school board for 4 years, I learned first hand of the serious damage the collaboration between schools of education and the teachers unions have done to our schools and curriculum. I think the tide is turning, but never forget, you are competing in an international labor market where your competition has been raised to work very hard on very challenging academics--for less money. European and Asian kids take tests much harder than all of the state achievement tests mandated by the no child left behind act. And if teachers complain that emphasis on tests "ruin" education, tell then they can quit the job they don't like (teaching to the test) and you will take their place and teach our American kids how to be competitive in the global work force. And, the final point on education--because it is so critical to full employment, every student and especially minority kids and their parents should be up in arms that the Obama administration in deference to the very powerful teachers union (google how many millions the teacher's unions contributed to Obama's campaign) is intent on dismantling "school choice" where ever it has flourished (DC public schools, Milwaukee and more). Vouchers to parents so kids can attend schools their parents believe are best is the most demonstrated path to high achievement. While Obama may talk a good game about Charter Schools which do not allow parents to direct public funds and currently do not insist that teachers be union members), I expect Obama will work to undermine the "non-union charter school movement" by initiating legislation that puts 'strings" on charter schools which will allow only union member teachers.
The fact that currently charters operate without being encumbered by teachers union rules is what permits the management and leadership direction critical to school improvement.
Bottom line, if our young people have to compete globally, we better be sure they can choose the best school and education--and have the government voucher available to pay for it--no strings attached! Margaret McIntyre

Dear under 30. When I graduated from college, Jimmy Carter was president and the economy was in the tank. I voted for Carter as a college student for some of the same reasons you may have voted for Obama. I quickly learned that the socialist life I was living in college was being paid for by the hardworking citizens of my state, many of them truck drivers, waitresses, construction workers and so on. I saw interest rates soar, our military was betrayed, the seeds of feminist ideology began to "blossom", divorce were surging, people lost confidence. Fast
forward, deje vu. Notice a pattern? This time, our country is so heavily in debt (to the Chinese) and the spread of extremist Islam is so pervasive, that we no longer have the deep pockets to fund "waste". Today, as a career coach, I recommend focus on accomplishing "something" even if it's not a "professional" job as you may have envisioned. Look very closely as the entire health care sector and you will see need for trained and dedicated people at all levels. The health care sector will be expanding regardless whether there is a public plan or not. In health care there is a job for every level of education and/or skill and interest. I suggest you run to your nearest junior college and get some practical training in health related field. Also, get a JOB of some kind, even if it's life guarding, coaching, child care at the local YMCA or working for UPS (seasonal hiring is coming up and there will be some--not like other years--but some.)

And, take an economics course. You will realize that the Obama/socialist approach to spreading the wealth is not a viable strategy for improving the economic level of all Americans. As you can see, some of the very rich are untouchable (Bank of America top executives for example) while the engine of new jobs (small and emerging new business) is being bled with taxes. Once the middle and upper middle class is "tapped out" (and we are close to it) then the politics will get uglier as the powerful and connected fight fiercely to protect their share. The only way to truly spread the wealth to more folks is to increase the size of the overall economy--and that will not happen as long as we continue down the course led by our current democratic congress and the Obama administration. Do not put your hope in the government. I admit, I voted for Jimmy Carter--but I learned and I'm not ashamed to admit I made a big mistake--I was still in "college mode".
If you read anything "new" this year--please read Michael Barrone's, "Hard America, Soft America" to better understand our national predicament. And, for a regular dose of economic wisdom, read Thomas Solow, Stanford Economist.

Wow, maybe if people didn't go into majors like history (without the intent of being a history teacher) people would be able to find jobs. There is nothing wrong with construction because someone has to build our buildings. Not everyone can be a CEO. Someone needs to do the hard labor. Find a job, and when the economy turns around look for a better one if your degree allows. And stop blaming Obama. You have yourselves to blame because one man cannot change an entire country in 6 months if everything he is working for gets turned down by the people. And it doesn't help that the legislators had to take their 3 month holiday. If its anyone you should be mad at its them. Free healthcare for life and 6 figure salaries for working half the year with their own private agendas to make themselves more money.

Go cry about it man...complaining or talking about it isn't going to change anything. This country has been through worse times.

obama is trying to implement a communist regine. taking away from the rich to give to the poor, but with out the rich the poor dont have jobs. i have a small buiness , with soo many taxes and soo many b/s am about to close down and turn to be from a middle class to a poor. this country is going to turn like mexico and all those south american countries where there is no middle class just the super rich and the super poor. we as american should do something about this.

P.S. we are in this problem because of decisions corporations and government began making back in the 1980's.... (taking jobs overseas.. ect) so 6 months is certainly not going to show headway... but, one day at a time is all we can do.

I agree with most of the comments below. I just applied to CSU to recieve my Master's in Education and work a minimum wage job with a Bachelor's Degree... I recieved 0$ in aide and the only financial support the state of Ohio offered were some loans...all scholarships and grants had been cut due to state budgeting.. so where is this boom in Teacher's aide or job stimulus?

This doesn't make any sense to just list what job types there are out there and then not make the direct link available to actually apply. Total waste of time.

Okay in 2006 I did a paper in my master's degree program about the Baby Boomer's going into retirement and how that was going to affect the workplace and companies as they would face a probable worker shortage. Amazing that in just three short years it has come about that instead of an over abundance of jobs there are too few...

More on topic, I agree with DaynaH20. WHERE are these jobs? I was expecting URLs leading to applications or regional databases or something. Gee, we're getting energy and health care jobs? Since I haven't had my head in the sand for the last 18 months I already knew that. Give us links to online applications or something FastWeb.

It is very easy to lay blame. It is the job of every American to know who your State Representatives are and let them know that you are happy or are not.
Yes, it has only been 6 months and in that time he placed us in a bigger hole than we were before. They are intent on spending money that does not exist and the money they can get their hands on is going to come from where? Us! The working people of course! In these 6 months he could have been LISTENING to the people instead of traveling and partying not making historical decisions is haste. Sooo many Americans are afraid for their future but evidently he is not. It's a very sad time for America.
