Believe it or not, the holidays are right around the corner. Have you thought about securing seasonal employment? If not, the time is now.
Most retailers count on the holidays since that’s when anywhere from 20 to 40 percent of the year’s sales take place, according to an ABC News report. As a result, companies hire seasonal employees to assist holiday shoppers.
This year, the National Retail Federation (NRF), the world’s largest retail trade association and the voice of retail worldwide, predicts anywhere from 720,000 to 780,000 seasonal retail hires nationwide, so the odds are in your favor.
“Retailers will add hundreds of thousands of valuable jobs to the economy this holiday season, including extra staff for their distribution centers, store managers, e-commerce and mobile positions and helpful staff associates,” said NRF President and CEO, Matthew Shay.
“Teenagers, college students and adults love working in retail during the holidays, especially with the perks of employee discounts and being the first to see what’s added to store shelves.”

“Additionally, as we’ve heard from several companies, these holiday positions offer thousands of people the opportunity to turn seasonal employment into a long-term dynamic and thriving career opportunity,” said Shay.
Since jobs are limited, utilize the following tips when looking for seasonal employment:
Apply Where the Jobs Are
If you’re looking for retail employment this year, it’s important to remember to apply at the chains that are thriving.
Discount retailers have been doing especially well and will likely continue to do so, as well as luxury retails.
If a company is struggling, it will be that much harder to secure employment since they are likely stretched thin.
When it comes to companies needing holiday help, retail is where it’s at. Look up major retailers online to see if they’re hiring seasonal staff. You can often submit an application online, too.
Even if you find a job opening online and apply, you should always make a point to go into the store and introduce yourself as a current job applicant. It will help you stand out amongst the piles of applications that every manger receives for the upcoming hiring season.
Introducing yourself often makes a difference in whether or not you get the job so, even though it’s easier to only apply online, you may not get the result you’re looking for.
Think Outside of the Mall
Consider the stores or companies people usually frequent for holiday gift-giving outside of the mall. The first place most workers will be looking is at the mall, so you’ll likely decrease your competition if you venture out.
The Early Applicant Gets the Job
When it comes to seasonal employment, the competition is fierce. Make sure to apply as early as possible and follow up.
Stores get piles of applications for seasonal employment and an overwhelmed manager will appreciate you putting in the extra effort to remain in contact.
If you’re willing to work on certain dates or shifts that aren’t as popular, you’ll get a leg-up on the competition. If you remain open and flexible with your schedule, you’re more likely to position yourself as a great fit for seasonal employment.
Never Insult Retail
Never insult the profession or make it known that it’s just a temporary fill for you or you’re likely to alienate people and not get the job.
