Barack Obama

Prior Experience: Ice Cream Scooper

Who doesn’t like ice cream? Barack Obama doesn’t (at least according to his daughter Sasha), but he has a pretty good reason — hours of scooping 31 flavors at the Baskin-Robbins on 1633 King St. in Honolulu.

Like many high school students, Obama’s first job consisted of scooping vanilla, mint chip and rocky road into cups and cones, along with crafting sundaes and shakes.

His stint at Baskin-Robbins was just one of many service jobs Obama held as a young man; he also worked construction, sold island trinkets in a Hawaii gift shop during the summer after his freshman year of college and worked at a deli counter in Hawaii making sandwiches.

Moral of the story: If you’re looking for a job, don’t be as concerned with the title you’ll get or the wages at the beginning. Showing you’re enthusiastic and willing to jump in at the ground level will translate to gaining more experience in the long run.
